My husband and I had high hopes that the teachers could help our daughter catch-up with her reading…read moreskills. After a terrible start to kindergarten during the 2020-2021 remote learning school year we felt we needed to get some intervention for our child. We started this process in December 2021. We met with the then director and had a pre-assessment scheduled. A week later we reviewed the results and made a plan on the types of skills our daughter would be receiving further help with and how many sessions she'd likely need to reach her goals. We scheduled everything, paid everything, and our daughter started in mid-January. That was the high point. Our daughter was going to the center four times a week for 1-hour long sessions. She had her first assessment and we saw progress and growth. Then, the director quit. Then teachers quit, and the front desk lady quit. There were disruptions that delayed assessments and our daughter started complaining about teachers switching in the middle of sessions and leaving her alone with tasks so she had no one to guide her and help her. A new director stepped in but also disappeared after serving in her position for only a few weeks. We heard rumors she was in the hospital but nothing official and no one offered an official explanation. As the school year came to an end we had seen only two progress reports in the five months we'd been taking our child to Sylvan in Vandalia. This was half of what we had contracted back in January. We decided we wanted to continue some sessions through the summer to prevent summer slide, but we changed our schedule to two 2-hour long sessions a week to make summer plans and activities easier to schedule. Our daughter complained she was being bullied by another student (an older boy) and the teachers were not helping. We saw a change in our daughter's demeanor and she was less-and-less cooperative about going. By the end of July we hit a brick wall. Our daughter had not shown any growth over the summer and the owner met with us (she was filling in as director because she still didn't have one!). After a meeting that suggested the center wanted to now label our daughter as a behavior problem and claimed she was the problem, we made a decision to pull our daughter from the center. I explained how the staffing issues and the bullying from an older boy at the center was negatively impacting our child. The owner claimed they would "investigate" but suggested we "take a break." Bottom line, this particular location is dysfunctional and trying to operate with a lack of full time leadership (the owner acting as director can only be there three days a week because she doesn't even live in state). Maybe the teachers that are there are great. Maybe the program can work. However, as it stands right now they cannot deliver on their promises. They are understaffed and unable to meet the needs of all their students. For the money we were paying I expected a lot more from this business. If you're considering this program I'd suggest a different center. Until this center can be properly staffed they will not be delivering on their promises.

This is the second year we've sent my son to one of the summer camps at Math Plus. Last year he did…read morea half-day programming camp, and this year he went for a full-day Lego robotics camp. Both experiences were very positive - he came home full of excitement about what he'd done at camp and inspired to continue working on programming at home. (To be honest, he was already pretty excited about building Legos at home, but the robotics part has given him a new focus.) The teachers are clearly experienced at dealing with kids and are actually full-time teachers during the school year, which was a huge plus for me. I was concerned that the people running the camp might just be college kids on break, but this was clearly not the case.

It's okay for him to be excited about math and learning whereas at school he sometimes feels singled out for liking math. The homework is never too challenging and there is plenty of time to complete it before the next week. His class size is only 7 or 8, including him, and he receives plenty of one-on-one attention. As a parent, I appreciate that I don't have to continually sign him up for a new term. Once you sign up for a class, it's an ongoing schedule of classes, that continue through the summer. I'm looking forward to him having interactions with a classroom setting and mathematics classwork during the break. I think having this experience will allow him to stay sharp with his skills. It is pricey, but I believe well worth it. It's a skill that will much more needed throughout his life than knowing how to throw a baseball.
