When I was feeling blue the other day, my boyfriend decided an adventure was in order. As Nerf Gun…read morefever has struck our apartment, we headed into Dartmouth Crossing to check out Toys R Us' selection. I've never been in the new TRU location, as it was built just after I left Dartmouth Crossing. The layout is really nice, bright and clear, with an connecting entrance to Baby's R Us, which is next door, and which I will never enter, unless someone drags me with quite a bit of force. Or bribery. The overall layout is super different than the old spot in MicMac, and it's also not nearly as big. It has a bit of a squished in feeling, to be honest. We were both looking for specific things, and we found them both. They have an excellent assortment of science toys, action figures, plushies, everything kids could want; Heck, they have everything I want and I'm twenty-eight! It was an ok visit. I'll be back again, I'm sure.

I get to cash the Barbie and Horse ring up as 69.99! I said no thank you I am not paying that. She pulled up the flyer and there was a Barbie and Horse on sale for 44.97 and it had a white horse instead of the traditional brown color. So I went on my why without it. I wanted to go look at this display and see how deceiving it was. After looking at it, I felt I should go to customer service and let them know of the error. To my surprise the awesome sales rep said I could have the Barbie and Horse for the price listed for sale, and it was their error and they will Price Guarantee the item! Thanks Toys R us!!!!

Toys"R"Us - Sadly this train table always looks like this. It's an unfortunate lack of care. Pack this table up or put it together.

There's a little used clothing section at the back and the quality and condition of the clothes is always perfect. There's also a section with gear for expectant or nursing mamas. The toys and kid/baby gear are all very good quality, with lots of options for unique gifts. The staff are so friendly and helpful. I'm always impressed by how knowledgeable they are about their products and options that might work well for your family. The prices can be a little higher in some instances, but I expect that with local businesses that provide unique and higher quality items. There's a little area for parents and kids to play or relax, and they've got a Kurig! I haven't personally been to the information sessions they regularly host but have heard great things from other parents.

I can really take my time here to browse and investigate my options without feeling like I'm going to lose my mind (I like kids - really I do, but 17 million of them screaming and running circles around me in Toys 'R Us is more than I can bear some days). - The staff are so helpful and knowledgeable, but will also blend into the background if you just want to browse around on your own. - The selection of second-hand clothing is in immaculate condition. I've never purchased second-hand clothes as a gift, but if I had a kid, I would so buy their clothes here. - They will "gift wrap" for you by putting your item in a Fiddleheads brown paper gift bag filled with pretty yellow-green tissue paper and tied with a green ribbon. Maybe not the traditional style of wrapping children's gifts, but the parents will appreciate a little understated beauty. And they have amazing handcrafted cards for sale at the cash register in case you're stuck at the last minute and forgot one. Or you just really appreciate a gorgeous card. One caveat - the prices are a little steeper than I'd like. I get that they will obviously have higher prices than a big box store, but the prices are just a smidge beyond what I want to pay sometimes. Not completely outrageous though. Perhaps I should think of it as insurance - chances are the kid isn't getting a duplicate gift from someone else. Unless they too shop at Fiddleheads. Oh! And one of my favourite things - you know the I heart Dartmouth shirts from Two if By Sea? Onesies and kiddie shirts my friends. Oh yes.

Being a teacher's spouse means getting dragged from educational bookstore to educational bookstore…read moreon the regular for pretty much the rest of your life. Sometimes this is a good thing (see: Woozles), sometimes it can be so boring you'd rather repeat the second grade than have to weigh in yet again on which 'Foundations of Reading: An Instructional Text' series looks more interesting. Tattletales is one of the few spots that does a great job of balancing booksmarts with bookswagger. Sure, there's plenty for teachers looking to stock up on new strategies but there's even more great books, toys, and activities to keep kids of all ages (and grown-ups who turn into kids when shopping in kids book sections) entertained while they do so. There's plenty of space outside for parking and inside for easy shopping - you don't have to awkwardly dance with other shoppers as you cram into the same aisle. Staff are smart, helpful and really know their business rather than just minimum wage earning teens who text from behind the cash as you ask them questions. Whether you know what you're looking for or not, they can help you out. While I don't know much about their special events, I do know that during my visit, Sheree Fitch just happened to be there for a reading - a favourite from my childhood ever since being given a signed copy of Toes in my Nose. Very cool!

They're a good mixture of a children's bookstore, a toy store, and an excellent resource for teachers. The new store has a spacious clean setup and the displays are an inviting feast for the eyes. The toy section has a wide array of educational and just plain fun stuff. There's a great selection of Lego and Playmobile with some sets I haven't seen elsewhere. They also stock board games and puzzles. This is a toy store I could spend quite a while perusing. I don't have any children, but I adore this store with my childhood heart and love of whimsy. I've found the prices to be fair and often less than the big competitors. They also offer orders on any book or product they don't have in stock. The book section is exactly what a children's bookstore should be. There is a ton of variety in titles and the layout offers a much more intimate setting than the big box stores. The displays offer suggestions on the best pics for books and prominently shows what's new. In the exploding market of youth books they seem to carry everything. Not just Twilight. They shelve all the top titles along with little known gems. Tattletales' staff are friendly and helpful. They give you that local feel only an independent bookstore can. A definite must for book and toy lovers.

There are pillows in there for example - just two pieces of fabric sewn together and stuffed, nothing fancy - for over thirty bucks. In this economy? There are things up about the store that also refer to Canada as "Turtle Island", which is preachy and a colonizer term (colonists brought maps from above and the "Turtle Island" thing is contentious and offensive to other Indigenous tribes that don't adhere to this term for Canada). I was only able to afford a pinback button (an ace flag, I love ace representation!) and a second-hand Beanie Baby because most of the new merch was so expensive. Friendlier environment than Strange Adventures, and I loved how kind and approachable the staff were. To be fair, this is a somewhat recently-established shop in comparison with its competition, and so the price thing might just be teething troubles, but nobody in this economic climate could afford to buy much here.
