They did a great job hand holding us through the whole process - obituary, casket, service, florist, mercy meal and cemetery. Without their help and guidance, I'm not sure we would have had the time to grieve. Eddie was exceptionally kind and patient with our family during such a difficult time. He had worked with many other Albanian Americans families, so he knew how to prepare for and accommodate all of our cultural practices'. Working with the right funeral home during a stressful time is extremely important!! P.E Murray Funeral Home worked within our budget while still meeting our families needs. I'm so glad we had the pleasure of working with them. They took the best care of our grandfather! Thank you Eddie and team!!

Mount Hope Cemetery - Bordering Mt. Calvary

Mount Hope Cemetery is a hidden gem!…read more It is hidden because it's off the beaten path as far as the city of Boston is concerned. It's not really a place you seek out to visit like Forest Hills Cemetery; rather, it is a place you become acquainted with probably because you live near or pass by. Mount Hope Cemetery is tucked in between Roslindale and Mattapan, I think it actually creates part of the line between the two neighborhoods and to be honest, I'm not sure which it is "technically" located in. Together with Mount Calvary Cemetery (it's neighbor) it creates the quaint pocket neighborhood of Mount Hope-Canterbury Street that I call home. I have to say, I was a little creeped out living so close to not one, but TWO cemeteries when we first bought our house, but now, I cherish these large, open plots of peaceful greenery! The cemetery is very old, according to the city's website, it opened in 1852. It is over 125 acres which is quite large, considering the entire Boston Common is only 50! The cemetery is a mixture of open green space, with grassy fields and water features along with densely grown and developed (with stones and memorials) areas. While you might feel odd walking amongst the dead, the headstones themselves are actually quite attractive, as the majority of them are between 100 and 200 years old and there are many monument-type pieces worked in that really lend to a beautiful space. With paved drives and pathways all throughout, the cemetery makes for an excellent place to take a stroll, walk the dogs or fit in a short run. Insider tip: There is a break in the fence at two different spots - one at the very rear of the cemetery (on Mount Calvary Road) where it meets Mt. Calvary Cemetery and another towards the front, along Paine Street. If it is after hours (after 6:30-7:30 pm) and you find yourself needing access in or out of the cemetery, these breaks are a lifesaver! Although I wouldn't personally be going through in the dark...tried it once and swear I saw a huge shadow where I know there isn't anything normally. I ran out with my dog, heart racing, squealing like a little girl. This is my go-to spot for dog walks, and the park is dog-friendly (as long as they are leashed and properly cleaned up after). I also begin all of my runs here, as cutting across the cemetery allows me to easily connect to Walk Hill Street and then to Forest Hills Cemetery and/or the Arnold Arboretum without having to deal with too much cars, exhaust and traffic on American Legion Highway or Hyde Park Avenue. One thing - no trash cans anywhere. So be prepared to carry out whatever you choose to carry in. I will continue to enjoy Mt. Hope for all it has to offer, and pray that the zombie apocalypse never happens - or I'm totally screwed.

I was in Boston on vacation when I decided to go visit my great grandmother. I was bummed when I…read morediscovered that the office closed at 4pm and I had no way of finding the exact site. While I was wandering around, a maintenance worker asked if I found what I was looking for and of course I couldn't find her among the grounds. He said to go back the next day and ask for him so he can drive me directly to her. I did just that and the entire staff was so friendly and out- going! The guy from the day before, drove me to my great grandmother's site and cleaned off all the surrounding weeds and was so helpful! If I lived in Boston, I would definitely used this location. It is beautiful and very historic!! The only problems I found were the geese, but that is pretty hard to control. Also, the grass could use more maintenance like weed control.

Am I really reviewing a cemetery? Well, yes, I am…read more I mean, why not, right? It's a public space nonetheless. Mount Calvary is at the end of my street. It is a quiet, little private Catholic cemetery. It opens around 7 am and closes each night at 6:30 pm. Dogs are not allowed (sad face) but it is free and open to the two-legged public to roam and enjoy. I've walked through a few times, took my mom through, ventured a short run with my dog (whoops!) before almost being caught by the guy mowing the lawn! We ran the opposite direction, you bet! The cemetery is very peaceful and creates a natural barrier between Roslindale and Mattapan (thank goodness...). It is well adorned with shade-providing trees and well manicured lawns. The maintenance guys are up before 7 every day, ready to maintain their little plots. It's great to see. I'd suggest this as a nice place to take a meditative stroll (although the traffic from Cummins can still be heard from most parts of the cemetery), read a book or just check out. It is an old and historic cemetery, too. Many of the stones date back to the 16, 17 and 1800's - pretty awe-inspiring. I've never seen another person (well, alive at least) in there, which I love, because I feel like it's all mine! Great little place, but not being able to tow the pooches keeps me in the likes of Mount Hope or Forest Hills on most days.

Last week my mother-in-law was interred at this cemetery. I could not believe my eyes. We were very…read morerushed around her casket. The cemetery grounds people seemed like they had somewhere else to be, it was 12:30 pm. Don't know why they were in a rush. They stood about 30 feet from us with their arms crossed, their bucket hoe and machinery ready to go. We said our goodbyes at the casket they immediately moved in to lower it, understandable. However as they were lowering her casket they didn't have a good grip and they dropped her casket into the hole. I didn't see that part happen but I heard a loud gasp and turned around and saw what that person was looking at. They literally dropped the straps underneath the foot of my mother-in-law's casket and her casket was sticking out of the hole at a 45° angle. If there hadn't been another casket below hers, her casket would have been standing straight up. Will my mother-in-law spend all eternity scrunched down in the bottom of her casket? Just horrible. Oh but that's not everything, the workers were in such a rush they blocked us in from leaving the way we came with their machinery. They proceeded to put the dirt right on top of the casket while we were all still there. My husband didn't want to act on emotion so he let this sit with him a few days before calling the Supervisor of the cemetery. He was more or less told what he saw with his own eyes never happened. The supervisor should be ashamed of himself. I have at least 10 people to back up what we all saw. We're not asking to be compensated, we're not asking asking for anything but an honest apology and maybe he could speak with his workers on how to properly lower a casket. Unbelievable. Fortunately there's several cemeteries around, word to the wise, pick another one. Of course if you're not that crazy about who you're burying and you don't care what really happens this is the place for you. If I could give zero stars I would!
