Perfection on the plate. This is simple food but it must be done well. I've had many poorly cooked fish & chips at home.
Here it's exceptional and truly delicious with one annoyance. I doubt the haddock could be much fresher had we been dining on the boat that caught it. The batter was light and crisp and the chips perfectly fried, all fried in clean oil.
We got onion rings, bread and margarine but it said butter on the menu (that's annoying as there's a world of taste difference between butter and this muck when vinegared salted chips are involved.). The onion rings were sprinkled with fresh parsley enhancing the taste. Again simply perfect.
If you prefer cod and are anti haddock don't go here as it's haddock but I assure you it's the best battered haddock I've eaten in a long time and you'd need to be real discerning to tell cod from haddock.
I asked the charming waiter why only haddock to be told instantly it's more sustainable.
We were there about 4pm having been touring the Emmerdale set about eight miles away and thought we were so close to Harrogate it was worth an explore and we had the restaurant all to ourselves. Glad we did. It's beautiful and the folks are so genuinely welcoming.
It also has a full bar including champagne but sadly I was driving so my wife had some wine.
They don't serve sherry which is the perfect pairing with British fish and chips. If I'm ever 30 mile from this delightful place again I'll go but I will insist on butter (which is more sustainable than making industrial margarine) with my white bread. Really worth supporting. read more
