The Dollar Stretcher Magazine is simply amazing. Their main focus is frugality/saving money…read more They're mostly online, but they do have a (small) print version. You're probably here looking for information about TDS's freelance writing opportunity, yes? I am a freelance writer, and my niche is frugality. I had been looking around google one day and I came across a website that gave me links to a bunch of freelance magazine opportunities, where I found TDS. When I first saw The Dollar Stretcher, I was kind of concerned that it would be a scam. The website isn't very well laid out, or pretty like most websites are today. It's not hard to navigate or an eyesore in any way; it's just not well designed, or pretty. I was, like I said, concerned, so I looked it up and found nothing on it. I decided to give it a shot, thinking it may be a new business or something. I went ahead and sent in my article on April 17th, 2013. I received a reply a little over a week later, on the 25th of that month. It was a generic-sounding email sent to me from the editor of the magazine/website telling me that they were accepting my piece, and their payment was $0.10/word. I was informed that they were going to be sending me a check for the amount after they edit and proofread my article (I would get paid the final word count), They also would be sending me a copy of the volume that my work is featured in. At this point, I was extremely excited, but I was even more skeptical. I don't think that, at that point, I had much faith in my writing skills or whatnot, so I found it extremely hard to believe that they would accept my writing. Especially since the first article I sent in was written in ~20 minutes (I didn't want to spend too much on something that might have been a scam). Fast forward a few weeks, and I get the check, along with a letter from the editor. My first check was for $57.60. I was still skeptical, as I'd read about people faking checks. Fast forward about a day and I've deposited the check into my account. I was giving it a few days to bounce back if it was a fake, and lo and behold, it never did. The Dollar Stretcher is, in fact, completely legit. That was when I finally accepted that it was true; I was a published journalist. I later went on TDS's website and searched for my article, which I found here: http://www.stretcher.com/stories/13/13may20c.cfm?FPMon I was ecstatic; not only was I published in a magazine, but they credited me! (I don't know why that was such a big deal, I'm sure I knew they were going to credit me. It just became real all of a sudden.) I even have an author's profile with them. (http://www.stretcher.com/menu/author.htm) Not too long later, I submitted another article, and some more after that, all of which were accepted. I was paid and credited for each and every one of them. I had told my aunt about it, and she told me that she actually subscribes to The Dollar Stretcher. It made me realize that TDS has connections all over the US (world?). I got my copies of the volume my work was printed in a month or two after they were accepted. The magazines were rather small, only 9"x6"x .110" . It wasn't what I was expecting, exactly; the magazine I received was printed on regular-feeling paper and stapled together (though it looks better than it sounds). On the front it says the price was $3, though I got it free for being in it. It was black and white, and had 14 articles in that issue. I've got to say though, there is a whole lot of great writing and information on the website and in print - their writers really know their stuff. So, if you're thinking about writing for TDS, let me be the first to confirm that they are completely legit and /do/ pay. If you're a possible customer, give TDS a shot, there's a bundle of great information that will /definitely/ help you save even more than the amount you would pay for your subscription. The website's free, too :)
