Constructed in 1822 of stone and decommissioned in 1881 and then returned to active service in…read more2014, the Charlotte Genesee Light is a lovely example of some of the earliest lighthouses. 40 feet tall and in an octagonal shape, it is next to but not attached to the keeper's house. The light was originally lit by whale oil lamps but those were replaced by a proper Fresnel lens in 1853. Not open for tours on this late weekday afternoon but the grounds are open and you can have a proper walk around. Even on a somewhat cloudy day, it is a beauty! My girlfriend and I walked with a friend from Schaller's on Edgemere to the beach, deciding to…read morecheck out the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse in the process. The staff are all very welcoming and knowledgeable about different aspects of lighthouse and maritime history as they pertain to Rochester. One of the docents led us on a tour through the rooms, pointing out items from the lighthouse's history and regaling us with its history, such as the 33 farmers who used a clever rouse to convince the British that an entire army was camped on the coast during the War of 1812, thereby preventing an invasion. We had the opportunity to climb with the tower. The lighthouse is only 40 feet tall, but it sits atop a 40-foot bluff, giving it 80 feet of elevation. The docent at the top explained to us of sediment deposits and years of industrialization had pushed the lake coast outward so that the lighthouse no longer sits at the point where the Genesee River empties into Lake Ontario; rather, it's slightly upstream from the current point of connection. The light room guide explained the current 4-th order Fresnel lens and how it still acts as a signal light for the lake in case boaters lost the ability to use modern directional equipment. He then gave us stickers in celebration for climbing to the top. Though there was a light rain, it was still a lovely day and a great spot to visit.

It is one of those special places that just feel distinctively "Rochester" while also feeling like maybe you've found some type of escape portal. BEWARE the photographers taking picture of local juniors in high school! Senior pics in the wild! Anyways, the sunken garden is a little hidden and not on the main path of Highland park. You go beyond the highland bowl then BOOM. If you can find a quiet time to drop by, it is amazingly peaceful and serene. You can take a walk through the entire highland park neighborhood after, or enjoy a picnic on the grass near highland bowl. Overall, a great ROC institution that's great for photos but also maybe just put your phone away and enjoy the view!

Rochester is an immensely creative city and this is the place to come to hear about unique and innovative projects and stories people share. This year, the conference took place at East High. It was fitting that the learning would take place in a school. It was inspiring to be back in a high school to learn after nearly 10 years since I stepped foot inside the school I graduated from. If anyone has an skepticism about Rochester's future growth, I recommend you sign up for TEDx next year. Your outlook will change and will inspire you to get involved anyway you can. The purpose of these TEDx talks is to shed light on aspects of our community that deserve some extra love or recognition. It's amazing to see people connect and discover the opportunities they now have after meeting just one person that can help take their project one step further. One thing that made this year awesome is that the event took place on a Saturday so you didn't have to take a vacation day! I hope they continue that trend for future years.

We had a great time at TedxRochester…read more The talks were all engaging. I genuinely felt that each of them were worthwhile and thought-provoking. The venders were all informative. The last-minute change of venue to East High School proved to be great. The space was perfect for us. We are looking forward to returning next year. My only critique was that we were frustrated with the timeline execution. We were happy to have time to network and mingle, but it could have been done much better. We arrived a little early but found that the "start" time was quite a while before the program start time. I'm forgetting now exactly how long - - but I think it was 90 minutes. And after that, we also had a very, very long lunch (2 hours maybe?). And after all the unexpected downtime, the program ran late. We ended up feeling very rude and ducking out during the last speaker because our ride had been waiting in the parking lot so long. But again, other than the timeline, it was a wonderful event. Thinking about contacting them to volunteer next year!
