The Brackenborough Arms underwent a big re-fit last year, and it's now the last word in glam. Lots of silver chandeliers, flock wallpaper, funkily-shaped furniture and oversized seating mean that it feels really luxurious, even if you're just popping in for Sunday lunch.
I haven't stayed at the Brackenborough Arms (I live too near to it to justify that) but friends who have tell me that the rooms are also beautiful. I can only comment on the restaurant! And it's stunning.
We've had mixed experiences actually eating there - a big family dinner (set menu) was delicious and very good value, but when I went there a few weeks later with a friend for Sunday lunch and sat in the bar, rather than the restaurant, we were disappointed when her fish and chips arrived adorned by a large bluebottle fly, and staff were less than apologetic - and we still had to pay the bill! However, when we complained after the event, the manager was wonderfully helpful and actually offered us a free meal to compensate for the one with a fly garnish. So with a bit of prompting, I felt their customer service was excellent. And apart from that meal, all the food I've ever eaten there has been delicious, well presented, served quickly and well priced.
Definitely a good location for a first datealthough it's not walking distance from the town, so factor in the cost of a taxi! read more
