Let me start my review by stating this. I have never completed a review of a business or…read moreorganization before. My experience with the H&R Block was so horrible I felt compelled to warn others. Bill Heroy, the son of the owner Bard Heroy, did our taxes for years with no issues. Unfortunately he moved on and we used a new preparer in April of 2014. There was an issue with how an IRA rollover was coded, we had additional documentation from the bank but he refused to code it as a roll over instead of a full distribution. We decided to go ahead and have the returned filed and we would amend it later. The return was filed electronically and noted on the documents it was e-filed. We brought back more documentation and in October of 2014 and we filed an amended return. Several months later we received a letter from the IRS saying we could not file an amended return because the original had not been received. We went back and filed an original return. Unfortunately, this was only the beginning. Another few months passed and we received a letter from the IRS with a penalty for failing to file and failing to pay. Since the original return was not received until well after October we had a hefty penalty tacked onto what we owed. I began calling H&R weekly and then daily. Bard refused to take any of my calls and refused to call me back. We purchased the peace of mind and wanted their assistance in resolving the matter. During this time we moved and met with our local branch who encouraged us to reach out to the Durango branch. After a month or so of calling every day we faxed a letter demanding they file a peace of mind claim. Eventually we received a letter in the mail from Bard saying, "It was our responsibility to mail the original return and they have no record of the amended return". Let me be very clear on this point, that letter was a complete lie. The initial return was prepared to be e-filed and is noted on the front page, we have the amended return the IRS mailed back with Bards signature on it. We have continued to call and call and Bard has never once spoken to us. We finally got ahold of the H&R Block escalation department, after a month of their attempts our local branch reached out to help us. They processed our claim and we are waiting on our refund. H&R Block may guarantee their work but Bard Heroy is an unscrupulous business man. How can you offer a 100% guarantee, charge a fee for a 2nd guarantee and then refuse to answer phone calls. I guess if you pretend you didn't make a mistake then it didn't really happen right. I have never experienced anything like this in my life, what example of ethical business in a small town!
