    Loaded fries.
    Jessica K.

For a place with such a limited menu, I expected everything to be amazing. Alas, it was not. I ordered a large loaded fries in a PMS-ing frenzy, expecting something in the ballpark of Massive Wieners disco fries, but they were nothing alike. For starters, they were chips, not fries. Each of the toppings was bland - even the Cajun seasoning. I probably ate a third before realising there wasn't any flavour hidden underneath the top layer and threw the rest in the bin. The chips themselves were quite good, and I'd go back for the vinegar chips if I were also across the street at Grill'd getting a burger (because their chips suck). Disappointing.

The reason for this is cause wherever I have been, if that burger is good, then everything else on the menu tends to be great. The reason I say this is because everywhere I have tried the vegetable burger, I go back and everything else is also amazing. But if that is not good, then everything else will be at best, mediocre. Well this was probably the best veggie burger I've had. My wife had a spicy chicken burger which she really enjoyed (same as my brother in law) and we also tried tater tots, poutine fries and jalapeno poppers. Everything eat great and I would definitely tell people to go try this place out. The only 2 things to mention is that it's very loud so it will be hard to have a conversation with friends, and that if it had rained before, avoid sitting at outside tables like we did add you will find slugs on the table or the wall and discover that they actually move pretty fast :p not to mention one was at the side of my cup and I discovered it as I went to drink. Fortunately this was at the end of my meal or it would have really ruined everything. So seriously avoid sitting outdoors or best the tree, if it has recently rained. If it weren't for these two minor things, id give it 5 stars. I can't really blame the establishment for this (although having some sort of outdoor covering could stop this issue).

I made a reservation (which was not necessary - I chose a quieter time) and off we went. My father and I are both American so have spent plenty of time in the real thing and we were pleasantly surprised. Atmosphere is VERY cool, it has all the great 50's and onwards hits so you and everyone you go with end up singing to every song. There's little juke boxes on every table (revving that nostalgia) that really work to make the jukebox in the corner play whatever songs you'd like from their "diner" play list. Lovely! I am Vegan and my boyfriend vegetarian, as this is a burger place it's usually very hard to find a meal. However, the buns are Vegan and their Veggie burger is great (mine no Mayo) along with a side of shoe string fries and a cherry coke, I didn't feel I missed out on the experience at all which is very important. The wait staff do a song and dance which is cool (I thought) ride on roller skates and at the end of our meal made a big to do celebrating my boyfriend's birthday, and have him an ice-cream sundae with a candle in it. Was awesome and very memorable! The one gripe is the music is slightly loud and when the pinball machines start, it can be hard to hear. However, this only really annoyed those in my group who were 70+. Great memorable night, made by the atmosphere alone!

I visited Smokey's with not much time to spare before heading to work. There were only about 3 other tables seated in the restaurant. Ordered the BBQ pulled pork sliders and a soft drink at the counter and waited an average amount of time for them to come out, 10-12 minutes. Three sliders came in the order. They were fairly small, would have benefitted from a side of chips, but I didn't want to spend over $15 so opted to skip the side. The pork was tender but the ratio of pork to slaw was pretty even, wound up scraping off some slaw. The sauce was a bit on the runny side, was slightly sweet, mostly smoky, with a bit of a spicy kick, but nothing noteworthy. The only thing truly American about this place is the license plates and logos on the wall. The portion sizes, taste and ambiance are nothing to write home about. Don't be fooled by the 3 stars in my review, this is as 2.5 star average as it gets. Curious to try something else on the menu, but certainly not rushing back.

I spied a Kansas Jayhawk banner...not something you see everyday in Melbourne. However, to be a true American joint, they need to broadcast American games on TV. Portions are large as are the equally high prices. I ordered the Carolina which came with 3 pulled pork sliders and a side of shoestring fries. While not exactly the same BBQ you'd find in the southern parts of the US, I thought it was rather tasty. The pork was slow cooked and smokey. I wish they had lunch specials as I couldn't justify spending over $30 for ribs at lunch, so I opted for the sliders. I'll go back....they certainly tempt you with buckets of coors light on offer. There is also a location in Port Melbourne.

We dined on the White Oaks tasting plate which had tasty pulled pork sliders, blue corn chips and salsa and a smoky tasty jambalaya. The staff were very attentive, food was served in a timely manner and in general the place had a great feel to it. I found this place to be such a great find because we simply don't get those flavours here very much in Melbourne and it was so good to eat something different to the norm. I highly recommend White Oaks, it's great for a date or a group. Deep south flavours, cocktails and music!

The food menu was equally tempting with all the Southern American goodies gracing the pages. Unfortunately it didn't quite deliver on all counts. First off, the service was slow and we had to wave someone down long after we were seated to order drinks and food. The server tried walking away after we placed our food order and we had to tell her to stop so we could also order drinks. Minutes later all of our food arrived in a flurried state. Our drinks were nowhere to be seen until several minutes later. They lacked any sort of timing and organisation, especially considering our drink order was one beer and an Old Fashioned, hardly taking any time to make. The food was good but something average that I would expect from an American fast food restaurant. The fried chicken was not on-bone, thus just dried nuggets. The fried green tomatoes would have been better with some seasoning. Jalapeño poppers were a bit better, oozing with cheese but no heat. Lastly the shrimp tacos, as beautiful as they looked, were lacking any spice or real flavour. They also served us three of the same condiment, paprika sprinkled mayo, hardly creative. This place has loads of potential and could certainly do better with their menu choices. I would come back for a drink at the bar but find somewhere else to get your deep fried craving.
