The station was opened in 1902 by the Whitechapel & Bow Railway. Electrified services started in 1905. In 1923 ownership of the station passed to the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, although services were provided by the District Line. Hammersmith and City line services (then part of the Metropolitan Line) started in 1936. The station passed to London Underground after nationalisation of the railways, you can still spot the old dot matrix systems on the Eastbound platform. You are more than likely to meet vociferous student from local Queen Mary campus on your travels from this station, what a treat!

The crowd is rambunctious to say the least, proper east London blood mixed in with the odd commuter heading to or from Liverpool Street. But one thing that leaves little to be desired is Cambridge Heath Station. Times being hard there are never any staff and the ticket office always has its shutters down so Cambridge Heath becomes the perfect urinal, homeless shelter and if far from private, great place to shoot up to an audience of 5.30 home comers apparently. But walk on by, turn a blind eye, hold your breath stepping over the puddles of piss and get onto the platform and take a look around and the great 360 view of East London, it's rare opportunity to get up this high and get the view in all directions. And just think, all for a quid or free if you like to live life on the edge, which I'd never encourage

Trains come every 15 minutes and are now generally on time. Also the sign used to say 'You are here' and point to cambridge but has now thankfully been changed (i think) and will no longer confuse touristy types who are looking for wonderful universities rather than strange cafes and 'gentlemans clubs'. Stratford Station is the train station that we used most often when we stay in London. We always…read morestay at a hotel close to Stratford Station because it is very convenient. So many of the different train lines stop at Stratford Station. As others have mentioned, this station is huge! We've gotten a bit confused a couple of times during our stay. The staff have been very helpful in directing us where to go to get to our destination. For our most recent trip to London, there were quite a bit of homeless folks and litter outside the station. Never noticed any on our past trips to London. Other than that, I have no complaints about Stratford Station.

I was hosting a dinner event about a 5 minutes walk from this modern looking Overground station and it was very easy to get to from North London. One would totally miss this station walking on the main road as you have to make 2 turns off of it just to see the station and there aren't any signs pointing you to it. It's conveniently listed as a Zone 1/2 station so you can cheaply get to it if you are coming from the North. If you're going to some places in between Old Street Station and Shoreditch High Street Station then check to see if this station is actually the closest to where you are heading cause it might be. Never really very busy and there's always an attendant in the booth ( who's actually typically very useful ).

As a commuter as nice as it is to have it as a station stop it's completely impractical when boarding and exiting. The volume of ticket barriers is far from adiquate for the volume of commuters which is frustrating when exiting but even more annoying when faced with disembarking passengers whilst you are trying to board.

The station is fairly large and is one of the few stations on the network to not be "Underground", meaning the waiting area is much nicer and more pleasant than other stations. It is on multiple lines on the Underground - District - Circle - Hammersmith & City It is also on the DLR route with services going towards Stratford and towards Beckton or Woolwich Arsenal in both directions. C2C services on the London, Tilbury & Southend Line also run via this station, so it is served by a good number of services considering it isn't a highly attractive area of London to visit. The station isn't as busy as other nearby stations or the network altogether, with an average 2-3 million commuters passing through the station. Changing lines seemed straight forward and a much nicer process than at more central London stations, meaning I was off the Jubilee line and on my way back to my hotel on the District line in good time. The station didn't appear to be staffed, but as a step-free station, this didn't appear to be a problem. No facilities in the station in terms of places to eat drink or toilets, again this is pretty common and average for an Underground and DLR Station. 3* - Clean station, the decent overall feel and one of the nicer places to change trains if required when going into Stratford.

The washrooms are convenient and finding the platforms is reasonably easy. It's a relatively navigable station with numerous connections to local destinations and beyond. A simple 2-platform tube station, perched on the line between zones 2 and 3, Bromley-by-Bow has…read morenothing to offer to the travelling passenger. There are a couple of benches on each platform. No food, no drink, and little light. Going up the steps at the single exit brings you face-to-face with speeding traffic on the A12 highway. Not fun, and not pleasant to walk along. There is a single ticket office, which isn't manned at all times. In late 2007, a WWII bomb was discovered nearby. Thankfully it didn't go off. The picture I've added shows it while still being under renovation. I haven't been to see it since early 2008, so it may have gotten a few updates. The District and Hammersmith and City lines pass from it, and even though it does end up cut off from a direct route to the centre on most weekends, there is always one of the 2 lines functioning.

The funny thing about this station is apparently it is the only station on the network were the…read moreunderground line runs over the overground line, so it certainly does that have to mark it as unique. It is a pretty major interchange though, and when I've been here it has been pretty crowded. It's a decent station station.

There's never a dull moment at this busy dual-served Tube station, you tend to be greeted by dour…read morelooking tramps or propagandists on the morning commute, and the lovely 'BEWARE WARNING: THIEVES OPERATE IN THIS AREA' always makes visiting guests exceptionally receptive to my neighbourhood. Previously served by three tube lines, the eagerly awaited East London line extension (due to be completed in 2010) brought additional sweaty commuters to the morning rush, although the temporary pain will surely remedy the long-term gain. As for the Hammersmith & City line, a friend of mine cunningly refers to it as the Hammersmith & (S)hitty line which I think is a fair assessment, though when it is working well the choice of stations is a good branch to the West. District line-wise, I find that the East serving arm is marginally (I repeat marginally) better than anything involving Earl's Court transitioning, however not a patch on the smooth running Central.
