A great activity for friends and family. There are great trails and falls you can also visit.

I am happy that we decided to make a quick stop to marvel at the Boulder fields. Although it is only a field of giant boulders it is a truly impressive, natural geological formation which is very interesting to see and equally cool to learn how it is formed. Had fun walking on the Boulders. Didn't wait here for too long but a lot of people walked much further into the field. The drive up there can be a little scary with narrow, winding roads but the route is well marked. Way out is much easier.

Main road in is still a mess.

One could argue that the boulder field really shouldn't have its own listing as anything you want to write about it could be included on the below Yelp listing which encompasses where the boulder field is located in Hickory Run State Park. www.yelp.com/biz/hickory-run-state-park-white-haven-2 Most of the explanations for the boulder field suggest that it was formed around 20,000 years ago during the last ice age. At that time, a glacier advanced southward from Canada covering most of the current US from west to east and stopped around a mile from the current site of the field. As to how it was exactly formed, who knows? Some say it had something to do with permafrost killing off the surrounding trees and leaving the below bedrock exposed. Then as the glacier melted it washed away all surrounding dirt and sediment leaving what you see today. But again, that's only one of many theories and the rocks aren't doing interviews so we'll never know the truth. The rocks in the field range in size from approximately 12 inches to over 25 feet in length and everything in between. The smaller rocks are at the eastern end of the field and the larger rocks are at the western end with the field itself clocking in at 400 by 1800 feet. Note that while this boulder field is certainly cool and awesome, it is by no means unique as there are others in the area starting with River of Rocks near Kempton or Ringing Rocks in Upper Black Eddy. The boulder field itself is not terribly hard to find at Hickory Run although it is about a four mile drive once you turn off of 534. It would also help to eye it up with the park's signage as cell service in the area is intermittently spotty. If you need a map or a port-a-pisser those are about five miles away at the park office (Hickory run is a huge park). At the field itself there is nothing there except a small parking area and a few placards explaining what you're looking at. Also make sure that you leave the dogs at home or in the car along with anyone who has mobility issues. While some of the rocks are flat and sturdy/stationary, most are not. They wobble and move which equals every time I've been there I've seen someone fall. This one is truly a must visit if you're in NE PA.

When I heard about the Boulder Field in Hickory Run State Park, I thought it would be an easy trek to the trail leading down to the falls, but I was mistaken. Simply put, it's a field of giant rocks. Some are easy to jump from one to another, others aren't as sturdy. Definitely a fun time, but a lot more challenging than we initially expected-- you need strong ankles and good balance to tackle these boulders for sure.

This is a very unique place. You see rocks as far as the eye can see. You can climb till you reach the end. Is there and end? Nature at its best. What a little cold, freeze and defrost cam do!

Amazing and easy to get to without much walking. The sight is absolutely priceless! It's 100% worth going to when the weather is nice. The Boulder field is HUGE. For completion it's difficult for folks who lack balance or leg strength. The rocks wobble so you're constantly testing them out. The pros seem to just go. What is great is that any age can still get to the field because it is steps from the parking lot. It's open from dawn to dusk. There are quite a bit of spiders roaming and I've heard people mention of snakes. If you plan on hiking the entire field I'd wear good sneakers, dress for being in the sun since there isn't much shade past the trees and have a good holder for your phone/camera etc... If you make it to the end there are trails to get back to your car. Don't go if it's raining or wet though. Someone could very slip and fall. All kinds of people show up. I've seen people doing 100% their own thing: bringing dogs, kids, drawing/sketching/photography, family photos, having lunch and so on. It's defiantly worth the trip!

Amazing place! Even though it just rocks it's beautiful. Historic nature events over 20,000 years ago have been lead to the bolder field to be how it is! Also walking trails around the feild! 10/10

It's really something new to see of nature's phenomenon. The road getting into the boulder field was so deep into the woods. Saw the hike as in a nearby trails from where I was staying. A must go if you are around the area and you love outdoor, not really hiking because you literally park your car next to the boulder field. A good sinage about the history of the field.

Beautiful one of a kind field! Don't plan your day around it but please visit it you will not regret it.

Wow, this is definitely worth going out of your way for! Our kids (15, 13, and 11 years old) all had a blast. Couldn't get enough of exploring. A bit of a workout, but safe if you have strong legs and are used to hiking.

Really cool thing to see. How often do you see a huge field covered by nothing but boulders?

Great place to take memorable photos as well as experience the one area of Hickory Run State Park that was not affected by glaciers.

I wore sneakers but would have greatly benefited from hiking boots for more ankle support after slipping and tripping my way along the dense leaf covered dirt trail that continued to get more rocky on the ascent. Also, you will need to climb some legit large rocks/boulders to reach the Pulpit Rock overlook but the challenge was well worth it for the views! My gf's & I chose the easy way down which was to take the gravel road alongside the observatory that eventually transitions to pavement. Even the decline of this road was steep in itself. No easy way up or down haha! I saw people of all ages and fitness levels along my hike and plenty of cute dogs! Bring snacks and water to re-energize during a rest break. My one friend packed some TP and I thought it was a great idea cuz you just never know when you might have to go! Parking lot is a joke with ~20-25 spots but many ppl, including us, parked along Reservoir Rd so make sure to get here early in the morning or expect to walk a couple extra miles just to reach the start of the trail.

The hardest part of the hike is getting to Pulpit Rock, as it starts with a fairly steep road to get to the trail, and then some more elevation climb as you get up to the lookout. From there, it's probably another 2.5 miles or so to get to the Pinnacle, but the elevation gain is minimal. Both of these stops provide great views, with lots of raptors flying around if you're lucky! Bring snacks and water, especially on a hot day, and cameras to take pictures!

There's plenty of parking. There's actually a building for your personal needs - #1 & #2 that is incredibly clean. If you're cycling there's a bike pump and tire repair station. Bring your own patches, etc. If you want to dip your toes in the river there are quite a few stairs that lead you to the water. I have been here a few times - and it always surprises. At the parking area there's a bench you can sit at to relax and take in the sounds of the running river. When you walk to the left - over the bridge - you will come upon BUTTERMILK FALLS. Not sure why the name but it's beautiful and soothing. There are a few picnic tables if you should choose to bring some lunch. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take your trash with you!! Whenever possible, bring a bag with you and pick up whatever trash you come across while walking or hiking as not everyone respects nature. If you bring a dog - pick up after it. I attached a few pics & videos. Enjoy!!

If you're afraid of spiderweb or if the water was knee high in mud- all was good! It's was a short walk, get ready to duck your head or slowly walk with your cellphone light to guide you. The cool air in the cave was refreshing before we stepped out to look for the trail. Once you drive past the cave, there was another parking lot a few minutes further abd we parked again. At that point we took a map from the information by the outside board and kept it with us. We walked on this one trail for more than a mile or two until we realized we saw more people riding on bicycles than walking. We found out the bicyclists were on your and individuals can rent bicycles and choose to be part if a tour or bring their own. The trail itself was a good trail for biking, but we didn't know because it was implied anywhere more bikers were on it than walkers. When we returned back to the parking lot after the walk back, you can also bring your own rafts too and large groups of people can bring it down by the water. The hiking trail at Lehigh Gorge State Park was nowhere to be found. On the map, it is shown there is a trail (the brown lines) once you park. There was no parking lot, no signs to indicate where this hiking trail was, and we moved forward to go elsewhere. The map should probably be updated for this hiking trail because we did try to drive slowly and look for it over three times. Please mark accordingly where the hiking trail is for Lehigh State Park on the roads. We would love to come back to bike! It was a steady trail for biking and a gradual incline you can barely notice, making it comfortable to ride slow or fast.

There is a bit of a pull off area, and there is a restroom, but when I went off season (warm but not declared in season) it was locked. So mileage may vary on its usefulness. Luckily, if your eagle eyes spot the pullover parking lot, the falls are a pretty short walk. I recommend taking the path to the right to the top of the falls so you can then move down the steep incline instead of going up. The view from the bottom is very pretty. It's a good view and only needs like 20 minutes tops of your time. It was quite doable for my senior mother, but some parts were very slow moving. She enjoyed it, so it does still work for beginners as long as it's not been raining. Would recommend stopping by if you like seeing waterfalls. It's the tallest in the state and very scenic.
