As much as I try to avoid giving half-stars, this one is a 3.5 rounded up to a 4…read more As part of my ongoing quest to find a neighborhood baker, I paid a visit to Boulangerie des Bains on my way to work. I had been avoiding BdB because it seemed a bit too organized and a bit too clean to have a real neighborhood feel. They had many tempting pastries and chocolates that were tastefully presented in a large display, but (1) it was 7:30 am and too early for a piece of tart or a slice of cake, and (2) I had decided to sample the croissant at each bakery for a fair comparison. Although admittedly I did cheat a little bit and get a croissant des amades (CHF2.20--quite reasonable!). I was expecting a more manufactured taste than the small hole-in-the-wall bakery that I visited last week, considering the larger scale of BdB. Surprisingly, the croissant had a nice, slightly imperfect density and light sticky glaze that made it evident that they were home-made, and the almond paste inside was also a good texture of graininess. In fact, it tasted much fresher than the croissant I had purchased at the smaller bakery. As there are plenty of other bakeries in the area that I have yet to visit as I continue on my quest, I cannot say at this point that I've found my neighborhood baker. But if I'm looking for a little treat, I would not hesitate to go back to BdB to try their many other tasty-looking offerings.

There's not much to do around Ferney Voltaire…read more So if you like chocolate pastries, drop by this little patisserie and pick up some chocolate cupcakes or croissant to go. The chocolate cakes all had a perfect caramelized base crust that is surprisingly good. They open early and close by 7pm. And let's face it, what else can you do if you're stuck in Ferney Voltaire on a cold winter day but snack on some pastries with a cup of hot tea while looking out the window of your hotel room at snow, buildings and roads?

The more and more I go here and try new things I have decided that this is by far my favorite…read morebakery in France....The baguette has been known to not make it home to the table as my kids and I devour it in the car, its not our fault..sometimes we get it and its hot...and crusty, yet warm and succulent inside....if only I can carry some butter in my car!!! Needless to say they also have these little round cheese breads, imagine a cream puff but its cheesey and savory inside instead of the cream....my husband bought a bag of 10 one Saturday morning....they are a bit bigger than bite size...I think I ate 8 of them with my coffee....DIVINE. Mille feuille, known in the US (well NJ) as a Napoleon , is by far the best here I have ever tasted...It has the perfect ratio of creme:pastry:frosting...too many places skimp on the creme inside or frosting on top but La Fournil has it SPOT on. The only downside is I never get a parking spot nearby and they have no parking but its worth the trip to find parking and go inside.
