Stopped at this quaint little french bakery on the way back home from a cottage weekend. I write…read morethis review with both fond and bittersweet memories. Let's start with the good. You walk into this unsuspecting bakery that is on the side of the road across from a chip stand and a sort of dépaneur style restaurant. It really does not look like much, the outside looks bland, nothing really special, to be honest. My fiancé and I stopped in and we're looking at the various sorts of sweet cinnamon and sticky style buns that they had. We got a couple and we're off on our way home to Ottawa. Now- the bad. We got home, prepared some evening tea to have with out treat, only to realize with our first bite that we should have gotten more, as in, much, much more. How could we be so silly, we said to ourselves! But what could we do, we were already home and almost two hours away from this wonderful little bakery. For all of you who stop here- buy or eat as much as you can, for it will be one of those life regrets that shall haunt you for the rest of your days.... Or at least until you return. - The end

The service was friendly and very capable (one server was handling an entire breakfast rush without faltering). I wish I could try everything from the bakery. Note that if you want to dine in, just bypass the coffee and bakery line, but wait for acknowledgement before selecting a seat at the communal tables. I wish my French was serviceable to be able to better translate what I was told, but everyone spoke English well enough to get by.

The food is outstanding. Creatively conceived, really well executed, and delicious. Service is excellent, and not being great with French isn't a problem as the team here all speak English very well. And trying to converse in French even though I'm not good is appreciated. Ambiance is good, but there are communal tables, which I'm not a fan of. Not a big deal at all though, especially considering how consistently excellent the food is. The baked goods are all fantastic, too. Great breads, and sweets. It gets packed at lunch, so be prepared to wait. It's worth it.

The owner went in back to get me my weekly whole wheat bread sliced and bagged it for me. The best part of this is their prices. Their bread is only 1.90$!!! We get our bread there every week now. It's so much better and fresher then store bought. We freeze the extra and take it out as needed. They have a nice variety and even have coffee made and ready to go in the back of the store. I can't rave enough about this place. I am so happy and blessed we found it.

The only complaint I can think of is if you show up between 11:30am and 12:30pm, there is a good chance the line will be backed out the door. On this particular occasion I made it right around 11:30 am and I only had 4 people in front of me in line. The bakery is run by the same two people day in and day out, Rob and Anna. They can come off a bit standoffish at first but nothing could be further from the truth. Rob spoke to all 4 people ahead of me and even knew some of them by name and things going on in their lives. On this visit I had a cup of Chicken Gumbo and a Turkey Sandwich. The Gumbo was full of sausage and veggies and had a nice flavour to it. The sandwiches however really are the star of the show here as Chuck pointed out. The bread was so fresh it was still warm. And the turkey piled about 3 inches thick. I opted to add cheddar cheese for the bargain price of $0.50 bringing the price to $6 for the soup and sandwich. An unbelievable bargain! Not only would I recommend Riley's bakery but would consider it a necessary stop if you visit Cornwall. You won't be disappointed.
