I mean I understand the history behind this with the American occupation after World War II, but I don't understand the nostalgia. Probably because I'm a relatively younger American (and a minority at that) that doesn't yearn for those days. I go here because it's one of the few places open late near the Messe. The food is mediocre in general and there are some strangely unamerican items on the menu. When I saw they offered eggs on a pizza, I decided to try it. That part wasn't bad. Unfortunately the rest of the pizza was bad, reminding me of school cafeteria pizza with the sauce and crust. Given the amazing Italian offerings in the city, this offering just makes American pizza look bad to a novice... and it's not even American! I've also had the veggie burger here which was all right. Somewhat dry but drowning it in condiments fixes that.

Enter Andy's Diner, a restaurant plopped right beside the ZOB lounge serving American food thus accepting Amex. Score. They have booth seating with a close-to-American menu written in both English and the native language. The tricky part about ordering in German restaurants is the water. I thought I had ordered correctly for still table water (or water without gas), but I was served the typical bubbly kind. I wasn't too hungry so I decided on getting their version of a chicken club sandwich so I could take a few bites and wrap the rest for my trip. True to American diner style fare, the portion was huge. However, I found the extra layer of toast and chicken breast a bit excessive. Also, the sandwich was subpar in preparation, taste, and quality of ingredients. The bacon was charred to a total loss. How do you do that with bacon?? They did serve a small side salad and slaw--that's pretty much all I could stomach. The table across from me ordered what looked like Baby Back Ribs, again, large portion, but I wondered how it would have tasted. The service was okay for a restaurant in the area. However, I would just come here for a drink and/or snack rather than order off of their food menu.
