Last year, I was lucky enough to receive an invitation to an intimate birthday dinner at Rhubarb…read moreRhubarb. I hadn't heard anything about this place, except that it was French cuisine. After getting lost in the leafy streets of Wooloowin, I finally found myself sitting in Rhubarb Rhubarb's dining room. The wait staff, from the moment you enter, serve you with the perfect balance of warmth and professionalism. They will be whoever you want them to be. If you don't like overly friendly service, they'll take a step back and serve in a more formal manner, but if you like waiters who will sit down and crack jokes with and your company, well, they can do that too (we chose the latter option). The menu listings look pretentious. Swallow your skepticism, and try something. The dishes are presented immaculately, the flavour combinations are exquisite, and you'll find yourself looking at the dessert menu for the most abstract listing- because all of a sudden, you've realised that being adventurous is fun and extremely tasty. I dare you to try the scallops on apple and celeriac puree with Berkshire pork belly ($19.50). I couldn't even wrap my mind around the idea of scallops and pork belly in union, but I'll you this, when I began to eat it, 'understanding' my food went out the window. I just enjoyed it, immensely. For mains, I'd recommend a more classic dish: the eye fillet with sauce Béarnaise, pommes fondant and asparagus ($39.00). It's less about exploring shocking combinations and more about focusing on elegant and rich flavours. For dessert, well, it's hard to choose anything but the creme brulee ($14.00). Just do it, if only for the spoon cracking element. It is pricey, but I'd wager that you wouldn't have had a meal this good in a long, long time. Go on, indulge yourself. Go to Rhubarb Rhubarb and treat yourself to the elegant method and flavours of French cuisine.

Lovely restaurant with delicious French fare, lovely service and a good atmosphere. Entrees, mains…read moreand desserts were all smashing across the table. The goats cheese entree is a must! The only thing I'd say was that I didn't realise it wasn't licensed so it would have been helpful if that was mentioned when booking so I could've bought wine along instead of having to go back to a bottle shop. Overall, a lovely experience and I'll certainly be back for special occasions.

The short version: Having tasted 10 of the 15 things available on the menu here, I think I can…read moresafely say that the food here is mostly very good to excellent. I say "mostly" because I noticed a tendency towards over-salting things. That happened relatively often but only ever with the minor/accompanying elements, so it wasn't a major distraction. Food score - 4.5 / 5.0. The rant version: My wife and I dined here for our anniversary. The food was very good overall but we had a bit of a problem with the service. The issue was that we wanted to order one 7-course tasting menu and one 5-course a la carte menu to maximize the number of different things that we could try. The staff promptly told us that couldn't be done, because both menus had a "minimum 2 per table" policy. That policy isn't stated anywhere on their printed or online menu, and it makes me wonder what they do if they ever get a table of 1 (or 3). When we pressed them on the issue they said the reason was because they wouldn't be able to time things properly so that the dishes came out together. We told them that was fine, that they could bring out the dishes however they wanted as we were just going to share everything anyways, and that we just wanted to enjoy our anniversary dinner and try as many different things as possible. Still they refused, and insisted on telling us what we could and could not order. Personally I consider that a completely unacceptable level of service. Unless the restaurant is paying us to eat there, the restaurant has no business telling us what we can and can't order (hint: the restaurant was not paying us to eat there; quite the opposite, in fact). Doubly so when we're there for a special occasion and the restaurant is well aware of the fact. So for their perplexingly poor customer service, I'm deducting a point from their score. The food was certainly good, but there's just no excuse for being TOLD what to eat. Overall score - 3.5 / 5.0.

My very first Australian review! I have been waiting god knows how many years to write up my Aussie…read morereviews because god knows how many of them I have piling up through the years from visiting my family and friends down under. I am happy to report that my first review will be Montrachet, a place my parents love to go to and brought my son and I when we last visited. When I was at university, Paddington was one of the hot spots where we'd go hang out at. Montrachet is located in Paddington. Like the other reviewer said their opening times are limited and you have to make reservations way in advance. During some times of the year they are closed for weeks on end so it makes it really inconvenient if you're wanting to go dine there. On the night of our visit we arrived to find the dining room bustling - which I was told is typical. Since there were four of us we ordered appetizers and entrees (in Australia, entrees are appetizers while entrees are referred to as 'mains'). We had Morton bay bugs and quail to start, both my mom's favorites. Then we moved onto duck and steak and my son had a lobster ravioli. I remember thinking everything was good but didn't blow me away. I had heard my folks rave on and on about this place so I guess my expectations were high. But then, both my parents mentioned that everything they tasted that evening wasn't up to par with their previous visits -- they visit at least once a month -- and my mom even apologized that it happened on the night I visited because it was such a rare opportunity that I was able to come. The chef/owner came out to say hello to my parents and my dad naturally mentioned that I was a blogger blah blah and since I was taking photos of the meal the chef asked me to please write about Montrachet. Unfortunately I didn't blog about it and am glad that finally I am able to. I didn't go home this summer. Maybe I will next summer. I know my girlfriend celebrated her birthday there a few months ago and had a fantastic time. I guess I need to go back again. 3.5 stars!
