Made it through just before the storm.

You can find the Botanical Garden at the east end of the Westland Park recreational complex. It has its own parking lot, separate from the park. The garden is behind a locked gate so you have to adhere to the hours. It is free to visit Monday through Saturday 7:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Sundays from 7:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Hialeah spend $1.4 million dollars turning 5 acres into a tropical botanical garden. It is hard to believe that 45 acres here was once a landfill. There were two garbage mounds and Hialeah was able to obtain a $2 million subsidy from the state to clean up the area and to plant the garden. Work was started in 2015. There are 500 species of native plants represented. A paved loop meanders through 45,000 plants, lakes, and ponds. Along the way you can relax in a shaded chickee reception hut. There is also five roundabouts built by Seminole tribe members with cypress lumber. My favorite part of the garden was the bridge over the koi pond. Other features of the garden are a rock wall, bamboo forest, and hedge maze. There is even a very clean restroom. On the other side of the property is the Brigade 2506, a museum that displays war memorabilia. I love how Hialeah reclaimed this land and turned it into something beautiful and educational. The Botanical Garden along with the Garden of the Arts is worth a drive to Hialeah for.

Interesting little place near a sports complex. Good use of outdoor space. A little isolated, but lovely for what it is.

The nursery is beautiful, with a wide variety of Talavera pots, fountains, statutes, and beautiful plants. Everything is thoughtfully organized, making it easy to browse and find exactly what you are looking for. One of our favorite parts of the visit was their variety of Talavera pots. They add such a beautiful artistic touch and really complement any yard perfectly. What really made my visit stand out, though, was Yollie's help. She was incredibly knowledgeable and patient. She took the time to answer all our questions, offered help, and made sure we left feeling confident about our purchase. Her friendly and approachable attitude made the whole experience enjoyable. If you are looking for quality plants, stunning Talavera pottery, and exceptional customer service, Casa Planta Nursery is it.

This park is truly lovely but the placement near an industrial area and townhome is weird. Although it is close to the highway this makes it convenient to visit. Basically one can walk the park in 15 minutes but if you study the art it will take longer. For me the vibe is freedom, starting over, and liberty for immigrants in the expression of the art. I can totally relate since my parents migrated from another county and struggled here and made it here. In my opinion, the art felt like it was a tribute to all the Latin artists and what they felt. I am glad I made my way to this park because I think the idea of art in a park is brilliant as well as using dead space among the power lines is smart.

It was created as a result of the Miami-Dade County Building Better Communities Bond Program. A paved half mile walking trail winds among art and plants located under power lines. This is an area that is usually left empty although I sometimes see other towns put passive parks under them. The art in the park is by local and world renowned artists. Artists featured include Alexander Mijares, Astrid Alcayaga Art, Reynaldo Artires, Villamil ART, Rafael Consuegra Studio, Noel Leon, Antonio Fortuna Art, Aristide, Juan Abuela, Zaida del Río, Roberto Perez Crespo, Ramon Pedraza, Florencio Gelabert, and Alexis Porro-Fortún Artist. There are 11 murals, some of which relate the history of Hialeah. There are also sculptures that range from small to quite large. I never got bored. As I wandered down the path there was always a cool plant or thought provoking piece of art to discover. As I walked it was a little disconcerting to hear the power lines crackling overhead. The park also includes an amphitheater, benches and seating areas, and an elevated stage with turf seating. The amphitheater can be rented for private events like weddings. Parking is in a free lot at the entrance to the park. What a wonderful place to experience the arts and culture in the setting of a beautiful botanical garden.

There are a number of plant nurseries on this stretch of Flamingo road and this one is rooted in the Japanese and Chinese style of gardens also known as Zen gardens which are characterized by their minimalist style and rock-and-gravel plant beds. Zensation Gardens sells handmade concrete fountains and sculptures from Bali, an interesting selection of bonsai trees, and indoor and outdoor plants that include bamboo, palm trees, gardenias, orchids, and colorful bougainvillea. They also sell artificial grass and offer landscaping design and installations, and LED lighting for your garden. Follow them on Facebook for dates for their beginner bonsai class. Karin the Edible Gardening Gal was referred to me by Marando Farms owner, Chelsea Marando. What a great thing to happen to me. I had just begun to grow my own food, and had no idea what was involved. Karin quickly got me up to speed and taught me everything she knows. We have the best time laughing and she never tires of my mistakes. We just simply, correct it. When I tell her I want to grow something, she allows me the space to try, even if she knows it will not work. She says, "the only way to learn is to try, and sometimes you fail, but sometimes you don't". I love that about her, because that's the sign of a true teacher passing on their wisdom, but allowing the student to find their own way. I just planted my raised bed garden at Marando Farms, for the third season, and Karin was right by my side, guiding me. What a great gift she has been to me and my edible gardening life. Thanks Karin.
