Came here for some brunch as the deli round the corner stopped serving breakfast which is what were were looking for! The decor was easy and not particularly frilly like James G says. But what really annoyed me is that, after ordering all food and drink downstairs, we waited a considerably long time for the food. The waitress was completely off on one and not on the ball at all. She delivered our food nearly 1 by 1 (there were 4 of us) and without cutlery?! This is basic stuff! Having worked in hospitality for 7 years it is so blatantly obvious people need cutlery to eat!! I was sooo hungry and wanted to start eating straight away, having waited a while, and couldn't which was so frustrating! Its a shame as the review is based on only one waitress representing the place but I'm afraid I was not impressed, having been ignored by her when signalling for cutlery! On the plus side the food was good and they gave us extra smoothies (by accident) which tasted great. read more

If ever the phrase, "would be more popular if they weren't so busy" applied to a cafe, it would apply to The Boston Tea Party. No matter which of the Bristol branches I go into - I always have the same dilemma; will be there an available chair? Located on Princess Street, where ladies 'wot lunch' tend to eat, this particular cafe poses the biggest challenge. But once you do get a table then make the most of it: buy one of their delicious foamy cappuccinos, take a bite out of their giant roasted vegetable paninis and finish with a taste of their sweet cupcakes. The whole experience is one not to be missed, but it's best avoided at the height of lunch time. read more

I don't like this branch as much as the others in Bristol; it doesn't seem as 'free-spirited'. I know the coffee and cakes are just as good but it just doesn't have as much soul even though it is in a smaller perfectly located site on the edge of Regents Street in a beautiful old building with a big glass front. The main redeeming feature of this Boston Tea Party is the 'observation deck' style upstairs seating section with an almost 180° panoramic view out over Clifton Village (you want to crush the tiny posh people like ants). It is great for sitting and getting done in with all the natural light that comes in through the huge windows. But ultimately I think it's because the furniture, decor and art on the walls is so much more watered down in this branch (appropriately so for Clifton Village) it just doesn't work as well as the others in Bristol. I still think Boston Tea Party do the best take-home coffee beans in the city, and they have it granulated for your cafetieres (oh how middle class) read more

Bristol seems to be overrun with coffee shops, Clifton especially. I was keen therefore to sample the coffee scene in the hope of finding some top quality brew. We came here at the recommendation of a local bar tender. In the event however, this place seems more the haven of Guardian readers looking for some civilised down-time rather than a coffee shrine. And said Guardian readers would doubtless be content with this Boston Tea Party. There's quite a bit of seating, and upstairs the windows perches are perfect places to gaze thoughtfully out across the rooftops while chewing slowly on the pretty decent food here. The service too is unusually friendly, at least for those of us hailing from never-talk-to-strangers London. There's also free wifi. The coffee though, is mediocre, despite having the option of two different roast types. My latte was very milky and mild - my girlfriend's only marginally better. Given Bristol's abundance of cafes and the prices charged here, I expected better. Fine for a snack stop, but coffee-lovers are advised to look elsewhere. read more

We visited here whilst on a trip to Bristol, as the deli around the corner had stopped serving most of the menu after 2pm. It's a cosy no frills venue with funky decor. Downstairs was a smallish seating area and upstairs wasn't much bigger but they had managed to cram a fair amount of seating in. We headed upstairs and found a table for four. The upstairs area had a great work area for anyone looking grab a coffee and check some work emails at the same time. Along the windowsill is a large wooden desk area with individual lamps for each seat. I could see myself here with a laptop looking for a change of scenery and a caffeine fix. We ordered the Eggs Benedict, eggy bread with avocado, coffee, variety of cakes and a smoothie each. It would have been nice if they had offered to bring the drinks up rather than pile them onto a serving tray then commenting it looks a bit full do you mind taking it up the stairs and coming back... I'd put this down small amount of staff there, but we were further disappointed later on. After a fair wait our food arrived, the eggs benedict was served in a tin bowl, which I found odd as the eggy bread and avocado looked a lot more desirable, purposefully arranged on a large plate. Maybe they took one look at me and thought messy bugger? The nail in the coffin: The food arrived, no knives and forks. We politely asked for some knives and forks off the waitress. "You haven't gotten any?" she replied, Well we weren't asking just for fun. "I'll get you some know" she said. Two minutes later she's still collecting glasses from around us, so we offered to go get some ourselves as our food was getting cold and who likes cold eggs... "No don't worry I'll get them for you now" after this she carried her glasses over to a table by the stairs and proceeded to start stacking more. This was all pretty annoying to be honest. So after around 5 minutes she came back with the cutlery and we proceeded to eat our now room temperature meals... Which actually was pretty tasty still but that's not the point! : ) So overall i liked this place, and think it would be great for a work hangout, but we were let down by the lack of willingness to help by the staff. read more

It's only been two weeks since I moved into the neighbourhood of this Boston Tea Party but so far it's had more than it's fair share of my patronage and I keep going back for more. The hot drinks are delicious as is the Summer Berries smoothie (I'm not too sure about the other smoothies, admittedly). The prices are a little steep but decent for Clifton Village and, really, you're paying for quality. The staff are friendly and generally up for a chat, in fact, they've often struck up conversations with me. While it can get quite busy at lunchtime, it's quite easy to get a spot in the sunny upstairs if you go at other times. The Wi-Fi is generally reliable but it is a fairly loud venue if you're looking for somewhere to work. read more

Ooh la deed ah. That was the response I got from a friend when I told them I was going to this particular Boston Tea Party. I know what she means. Full of the Clifton ladies of leisure who wine and dine the lunch hours away, I found it difficult to get a seat. Once I was comfortably settled, I couldn't help but buy...two pieces of cake to go with my coffee. Yep, two desserts - I just couldn't decide between the coffee and walnut cake or the carrot and orange. I got some disapproving looks from some customers who were more concerned with organic, healthy goodness than indulging in the delights of sugar and icing. The cakes were beautiful and the paninis on offer looked scrumptious. Not somewhere to go often (unless you happen to be a lady of leisure) this place is really a treat. read more

The Boston Tea Party is a refreshing little café that offer's a variety of light lunches and refreshments, and is a good place to pop along to with a friend for a catch up. The café serves its own fresh lemonade which is worth trying - and although slightly bitter, the freshness of the lemons really makes you feel good! I have eaten here a couple of times and my experience has been enjoyable, but one thing I would like to say is that the portion sizes are slightly on the small side... I ordered a traditional English breakfast here and paid about £6 for it, which isn't bad, but it was very small and didn't fill me up at all! Saying this, the prices are fairly reasonable and it is a nice environment to sit in - particularly the comfy chairs downstairs by the window! And the café also has a fairly large upstairs seating area so there is plenty of space to grab a seat! read more

I love Boston Tea Party cafes. The one on Park Street has become my regular haunt. This one in Clifton is much nearer to home although for some reason I don't quite like it as much. The staff are nice enough, the goods are just the same and the location is good for people watching. So why am I giving this one 3 stars rather than the 4 I gave Park Street? I think it's just the atmosphere. It's not quite as homely and relaxing. They also don't seem particularly good at stock management as every time I've been there they've run out of whatever it is I happen to fancy. It isn't the end of the world, but it makes a difference. The cafe is still comfortable, convenient (if you're in the Clifton area, anyway) and pleasant enough. They apparently offer wifi (last time I went, you got free 30 minutes of wifi with every cup of coffee) but so every time I've gone it hasn't worked. It's been a few months since then, so it may well have been fixed by now. read more

I used to go here all the time for my lunch when I worked at the nearby Avon Gorge (also getting all and sundry's lunch orders, too). It may be a little expensive, but they do a mean jacket potato. I used to get it with roast vegetables, brie and goat's cheese, which is, without doubt, the best combination for a jacket ever. Food-wise, they also do a decent range of sandwiches and paninis, plus some divine desserts that are lovingly laid out in front of you, tempting you to buy them whenever you order something. On the coffee and tea front, they can't be knocked either. Many's the time when a large mocha with two extra shots saved me from a hangover at work situation. Oh, and if you happen to be here in the summer (and it's actually sunny for once) be sure to try their iced mocha - I cannot describe the sheer loveliness this creates in your mouth, so I won't. read more

This is smaller than the BTP near the museum and university, and the upstairs seating in particular feels very crowded. Their food is of BTP's usual standard, but there are more spacious places nearby if you've work to do. read more

My brother was a student at Bristol University ten years ago, and when he came to visit me for a brunch bite to eat he was dead set on going to Boston Tea Party. Usually, nostalgia deceives us, however his specs were not rose tinted and Boston Tea Party lived up to his happy memories of daily visits back in '99. I can see why: attention to detail. It has the feel of a local coffee shop with the cleanliness of a chain. The art supports local artists and is of a high standard. The clientele and staff all successfully stay on the right side of the fine line between overt trendiness and pretentiousness. The food is unparalleled for its price and type. Looks like I'll be coming back in 2020 to reminisce too! read more

Boston Tea Party in Clifton is a nice place to sit upstairs and people-watch, but beware the very cheap sausages in the all-day breakfast.

The hot chocolate looked so promising. A proper churner with gloopy hot chocolate turning away on the counter. Then they poured a tiny bit into the cup and added pails of milk and buckets of water. No, no no. This is not the way to make hot chocolate, folks. You started with the right idea - the melted chocolate in the churner - but then you went wrong. What you want is the lovely melted stuff, in a cup. Just a dash of milk to dillute it just enough to make it drinkable (although actually it's fine to eat it with a spoon) but definitely not enough to reduce the chocolate content to the status of Cadbury's drinking chocolate. Why bother? Just serve the Cadbury's rubbish and be honest about it. Don't get a girl's hopes up only to dash them. Could do better. Much better. If you want a model to follow, try the Wolesley's Fondant Hot Chocolate, or Paul Young's amazing dark hot chocolate (yes you can buy it in flaked/powdered form and I'm sure he can cope with wholesale if you ask nicely). As for the coffee, well I don't drink coffee but my husband said it wasn't actively nasty. read more

It's not the best cafe in the area and much of that is down to the atmosphere or almost complete lack of it. As BTP did not build the building BTP can't help that but you would think they could have been more far creative with the interior layout. Acres of cold plate glass might be quite good for people watching but you soon understand what a goldfish feels like. Other points to ponder. Well, the coffee's only avearge; I haven't tasted the tea but assume it's difficult to make a bad cup of tea; The tables are too small to accomadate a newspaper & coffee cup; the staff can be less than welcoming (a trait found in most of the coffee places in the area); the food is not at all bad but the range is limited; there is the occasional free paper / mag available In summary, given that cafe atmosphere is all important the dozens of other caff's in the area are far better in many ways. If other places are not full up I would seek an alternative. read more
