Note: this did not personally happen to me, but happened to a friend of mine. Here is her story and experience with dexter. Another friend also stopped going to him because he's missed appointments do to being in jail. DO NOT GO TO DEXTER. Soooo I'm just now announcing that I've got this tattoo. Yeah, it looks good but for 1, it's not what I actually wanted and two, the experience getting it is by far the worst I've ever been through. About 28 hours spent in the shop total for this piece (not all being under the needle) This started at the beginning of June. My first appointment was 11 hours. When I got there I waited two hours for him to get started. Cool no big deal, it was fine. I was happy with the flower design that I was only suppose to have on my forearm. We get started. (There is a picture in the comments of the inspiration tattoo). We get through some of the flowers after multiple hours. It comes up to 5 o'clock and I find out he has another appointment. Out of all the breaks and the waiting that I did, I definitely didn't have that much done. The guy comes in and waits for his turn but then a girl comes in and immediately Dexter (the tattoo artist) starts arguing with this girl. I honestly was embarrassed for her. So he decides to put numbing cream on my arm so he can take care of the guys tattoo in the middle of my session. He finally gets done with the guys simple tattoo to then go in the back and fight more with this girl. I sat and waited for almost an hour and a half for him to come back. (I don't have that many full days to work on a tattoo so I wanted to get as much done as possible) He then comes back in to do the lines in my arm and pretty much takes his anger out on my arm (pics below of the lines which were not suppose to be that big). I sat there so long before he started again that him tattooing it again hurt so bad and to top it off it looked like a 2 year old took a sharpie to my arm. I was in tears. It was so bad. Not wanting to get big lines to begin with, now they were going to have to be bigger just to fix them. So I texted him the next day (pics below) and he acted as if he didn't even remember me and wanted to fix it free of charge when he wasn't even finished with the tattoo to begin with! So my second time at the shop, he wasn't even there yet at the time of the appointment and still took forever to start. He then came up with covering my whole arm with more flowers to help with minimizing the lines on my arm. I looked like I had shackles on my arm. I agree to this because at this point it's already not what I wanted so let's just make it look good. He then fixed the lines and instead of finishing the tattoo, he decides to go completely over the original work and doesn't even start the rest. The original work was fine! I wanted this to be finished! So that day I walked out with the same tattoo as going in but with all the lines finished. Now my third time, he isn't at the shop so I wait. Once he's there, I wait even longer for him to start. So this time he has some personal shit going on with his family. So this appointment I spent under the needle while he is cussing out lawyers on the phone. Lawyers hanging up on him, him hanging up on lawyers. So unprofessional I couldn't believe it. After once again not getting everything done, he stopped tattooing me because he was too tired. Also I should add that he changed my appointment time to 4 hours later than we scheduled and in those hours posted he was out shopping for shoes. Now my fourth and last session, he was late of course and took a minute to start. This time he was calm and professional. Got everything done in a timely manner and I was out of there. The reason I kept going back to this guy, which was my mistake, is I paid for the tattoo completely and tipped at the first session. I didn't realize how bad it was until I got home. It's cool that I have a half sleeve but no matter what it's not what I wanted and for those who know me, know how much this tattoo meant to me. Never being on time or at the shop when he said he would be, changing the time of every appointment, talking shit about other shops, bringing in his personal life way past the point of being professional, not working in a timely manner, and just acting out with no remorse for anyone around him... it was the worst. He says he's not like the other guys and honestly I have to agree, he's worse. He also thought he was doing me a favor by not charging me for the rest of his work. I know I can't be the only one to go through this with him and I know I won't be the last. So if you want to save yourself from an annoying, unprofessional experience and actually get the tattoo you want, I wouldn't recommend going to Borrowed Time tattoos in McKinney and getting a tattoo by Dexter Tattoosdallas. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dexter! He has now done 3 of my tattoos and started my half sleeve tonight. The first was my vision that he brought to life perfectly and the same others were totally his design. He's so good I don't even need to check to make sure the tattoo is "okay" as he's doing it. I just trust him to do his thing. His work is amazing. The shop is very serious about cleanliness and sanitation. If you're looking to great work, you NEED to come here!! read more

My boyfriend I recently got Friday the 13th tattoos here. Such a fun experience! The tattoos were $20. Our artist Owl was very professional and entertaining. His passion shines in his work. The studio was very clean and up to date with current COVID-19 regulations. Social distancing was in place, hand sanitizing stations were available, and masks were worn. Staff was awesome and accommodating. Will be going back for future tattoos! read more

The only reason I'm giving them 3 stars is that the tattoo looks like the inspiration picture. We were here for OVER 3 hours on a tattoo they told us was going to take an hour. We sat in the lobby for an hour while the artist set up(have never had to wait for that long before) then we sat in the back room for another 30 minutes as she then finally started sizing the tattoo and prepping my husband. Note: there is no one else there to get tattooed. We got there at 6:30pm on Sunday we didn't leave til after 10:30pm. Every artist in there looked like they couldn't give 2 shots about anyone in there and they were smoking what I can only assume is weed in the very back of the building because I could smell it in the lobby. read more

The only reason anyone is leaving 5 starts is to get a discount on an already crappy tattoo. This place couldn't be any worse. First off, walked in and waited over and hour to be seen ( me and "Dexter" (Joe) has exchanged conversation previously about when I would be there I believed everything was arranged. I showed him what I wanted and he said he would charge 200. No problems. It's 3 roses on my left shoulder. Should be a simple outline and shading. He finishes a mediocre outline and then says I can come back in 2 weeks for ANOTHER 200 to finish! Super unprofessional the whole time. Talking bad about other tattoo artists in the area. He left his back door open where you could see a cluttered looking area where I'm assuming everyone he brought there slept? I'm not sure. I first went to Dexter for a very large leg piece. Over all it was 15 hours worked on it. It is not bad work. I continued to go to his shop for little random things when they did events just for the fun. Friday the 13th stuff and such I eventually got a piece done by Tomb Raider, it was her own art so obviously was for her to do. The whole time he picked it apart. I later went to her again, for again art of her own. The whole appointment he had her stop I don't know how many times because he wanted to go out and smoke. This is highly unprofessional to do to your own client let alone another artists client. I'm sorry but if you have ever been tattooed you know good and well that the more the skin is worked the more irritated it gets. So to stop every 10-20 min for long periods of time is just ridiculous. I however let this slide and again went back to the shop. This time however with my fiancé who was getting tattooed by Dexter and I again by Tomb Raider. Again with the constant stopping. Then he was harassing her about charging me more for the piece (I paid for a 3 hour session) which how you manage to even figure that out when you are stopping every few minutes is beyond me. I of course had 0 issue paying her more had the work ran over the time I was paying for. However that was between her and I not him. Based on the way he made the experience I decided that day I would never go back to his shop. The piece she did still to this day had lines constantly falling out because of the way he caused her to work. Which is not how her other work I have is what so ever. I won't even get into what his work from that day looks like. He and my fiancé recently got into a little tiff because it was mentioned to one of his other clients. His response was to tell my fiancé to mind his own business and claim it was a issue with his kid. First of all if you have a personal issue that is going to effect your work you need to deal with that on your own time not your clients time. Rebook if need be. Especially work that that client has to live with. Second of all it is damn sure his business when you mess things up and act as unprofessional as Dexter did. I have tattoos over half my body I have worked in a tattoo shop as a manager. The way this place is ran and the way clients are treated is not acceptable. For a person who claims to be better than and constantly proceeds to bash other local shops I wold expect better but I am sorry as others have said you are the worst. It doesn't matter how good a artist you are or not customer service is very important in this industry and yours is shit. It's no wonder you have reviews turned off on your Facebook business page.
