A fantastic find about half an hour outside of the city, Borgo i Vicelli really surprised us with a gourmet menu and contemporary flavours at trattoria prices.
We had the tasting menu (€45 by special request) midsummer, which was very light. All the vegetables are from their garden, and paired with olive oils from different regions of Italy depending on the flavour and strength required. most of the dishes had a purée or soup type base. My favourite was a "fantasia di verdure" which was a flan-like green base with a delicate variety of vegetables sliced and diced different ways, and a tiny fried quail egg on top. This dish could easily merit a Michelin star. The little taste we had of mezzelune with buffalo mozzarella inside was also spectacular.
The borgo opened as a hotel 4 years ago after a decade of renovation on the family property of Giulia and Andrea, the young chef. The restaurant opened last year to guests, and this year to the public. Call ahead, since the place often is booked with wedding exclusives. read more
