The set-up is far more reminiscent of a high security bank than an off-license. The drink they have to offer is presented within a display cabinet to the right of the shop with all price tags stuck to the front of the bottles. Akin to a bank or post office you drop your money into the drawer at the counter and close the cover that is then towed back to the cashier's side. Having told them your drink order you are then passed it again through the same means of the sliding drawer with the alcohol in a paper bag. This feels very surreptitious, very 'underground' if not moderately corrupt. Of course it's not and all they are doing is protecting themselves against the misconduct of abusive and light-fingered, thieving customers prominent in the centre of Dublin but you can't help but feel faintly nervy by the curious set up. The drinks are cheaper than purchasing them elsewhere with a can of Bulmers priced at €1.35. This however bodes for a narrow stockpile. When I last visited they did not sell Druids and so I was forced to go elsewhere. Booze 2 Go is definitely creditable if we're talking about acquiring low-priced booze, but it couldn't give the impression of being more disreputable if it tried. NB/ Any purchase done by credit/ laser card has to be 12 euros or over.

Drinking can be a vile pastime but when you buy your alcohol in this place it doesn't seem so wicked. First off, the inside of the shop is clean and the floors are polished. Secondly, this business is more than just booze and cigarettes. You can almost call it a newsagents. It has a great selection of newspapers and magazines and sells all the daily staples like milk, bread, butter and juice. Every time I go to the Grapevine there are always some good sales and the shop keeper is available to help. He never follows you around or eyes you suspiciously like in some other places.

Stocking mainly from small wine growers from the Old and New World, O'Brien's new approach to wine selling is closer to the winery experience, with regular tastings and a more robust catalogue to choose from. There's always something on sale here, and if wine isn't to your taste, this large Offie also delivers on main brand spirits and beers.

The guys generally pick a selection of wines to put on special in the centre of the floor, generally around the €10 mark, and they change frequently: for example, during the summer, you're likely to find some fruity barbecue wines on offer. Advice is available if, like me, you don't know much about your wines, and they're more than happy to steer you towards value-for-money rather than try to upsell. As a beer man myself, Kelly's is miles better than the other local off-licence. They stock all the usual suspects in an open fridge, but they also have an excellent selection of quality imports such as Flensburger, Baltika, Spaten, etc. They stock some good Irish brews as well, and regularly have five for €10 on some of the good European beers. Better selection, better staff, and good deals. What more could you want? While you could probably find better bargains on mass-produced plonk in Tesco's or similar, these guys have a great selection and know their stuff. As a small local business, they do an outstanding job serving their customers, too. And if you need it, they can sort out your party needs with glass hire, too.

Although this establishment is small, their selection of whiskey is quite large and varied. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about what they are selling and, honestly, they couldn't be friendlier. For instance, I was emotionally distraught and conflicted on which whiskey to take home. They offered my wife and I taste test and spoke to us about each bottle and its associated flavor profile. The best was that they didn't try to sell me on anything, it was a genuine conversation. Excellent customer service! Overall, I walked out of there, mission accomplished, with a great experience, two bottles of whiskey, and about five small sample bottles for a little under €200.
