I was curious about SwapIt for years, and finally set up a time to go in and swap one item (which…read moreis an option on their website for newcomers who aren't members). How it appears to work is you can "try before you buy" a membership by making an appointment to swap one item. I'm honestly not sure why an appointment is needed because there was no one else in there when I went for my appointment and the person working in the store doesn't give any one on one attention while you shop. (I preferred this but others might want that). I brought in a nice dress for my swap (brand new with tags), and was surprised to see the condition of most of the clothes available. It's on par with Goodwill. Many things were pilly, faded, stretched out, and some just looked out of style. I took photos of the shoes to show an example of the condition of the items. I was hoping for more of a boutique experience with excellent pieces in good or like new condition. Gently worn is fine for secondhand, but a lot of these things had seen better days. I took my item and left. I can't recommend this place based on what I experienced today.

The best part is that if it doesn't work as well outside of the store, I can bring it back and swap for something else next time. SwapIt keeps my wardrobe fresh and allows me to pass along clothes that no longer fit my life to what I know will be a good home. They even participate in textile recycling so I can drop off the sad socks that have not found their mate or my kid's ripped shorts. The clothes are all priced semi-reasonable. As an avid window shopper, online shopper, and in-store shopper of clothing (you can tell I love clothes right? I'm not familiar with how big the boutiques on Newbury really are since I only popped into 3 of them, but in comparison to the ones in Melrose in LA, this shop is similar. Really not good for consigning! They have mixed up the dates by which I was supposed to pick up…read moreclothing, resulting in them getting to keep them and sell and keep all the profit. Fair enough, except that they should get their dates correct or else take responsibility! Also, they have accepted items from me and then inexplicably tossed them, without telling me. They charge $5 per month for their consignor access website, and it is very hard to opt out (I had to opt out every time I consigned and sometimes press them to reverse the charge after it had been applied anyway). Also, I noticed that the payout amount is often less than what was on their label. I don't think they want you to see the labels but I went in the store to take a look and it was higher than what they marked on my printout. Not recommended for consigning.
