We also financed our tank-less water heater from Boonstra in 2021. We wanted to buy it out. The fee and the amount to be paid (if bought out) was on the contract. Yet when we called we were told that we would be charged a much higher price to buy it out. The salesmen was a con man, he provided misleading information. If you choose to deal with Boonstra carefully examine the contract for all clauses related to the buyout. This review also posted on Google. Buyer beware! This experience is with who I presumed was a technician but turned out to be a salesman. I called to have my ducts cleaned and then to have a free inspection of my home for air quality. The "technician" did not do an inspection but asked about my furnace, age etc. He came to the conclusion that it would be best to replace my furnace as soon as possible because of age, 16 years, to avoid a breakdown (which admittedly is possible). Then we could start talking about air quality. He started quoting me these exorbitant prices for furnaces (no A/C included), anywhere from $12,000 to $15,000 stating furnace prices have gone way up. He kept calling back for a few weeks before the scheduled duct cleaning even when I told him I am going to hold off purchasing one for now since we have an Enercare maintenance/repair plan and don't want to go into debt. His offer was a "deal" of around $11,800 for a $15,000 furnace. I investigated furnace prices and found out that the price of a furnace for my home came to about $5000 to $6000! I finally cancelled the duct cleaning out of frustration and feeling deceived. I thought calling a local company that has been established here for a long time with many positive reviews would be a good idea. Rather, it seemed that the salesman was likely deceitful and out to make $$$, trying to take advantage of a couple of older folks who he thought probably would not investigate what he was up to. Deplorable conduct and I will never use Boonstra to install a furnace in this house. I really wonder if Boonstra has inflated their Google review numbers using hired reviewers. I am very disappointed by this experience and I am going to update this review for a period of time so that it comes up first in the sort as the latest review allowing others to see it right away and they are not taken advantage of. Update April 2nd - I called Boonstra to inform them of my name, address, and the date, March 30th, that the duct cleaning was scheduled for and cancelled plus gave them the name of the salesman who came over. If I remember correctly it was Sean. The response by management of "they couldn't find me in their system" is obviously a fabrication to deflect the seriousness of this negative review. PLEASE! Stay away from this company. I blame myself since I did not check here or on BBB. They have several complaints at BBB, and a whopping majority of Yelp reviews are for 1 star. My experience was virtually the same as was the others' who complained. My water heater was leaking and my a/c had made a strange sound once, so I called for these to be fixed as needed. The supposed technician came out on July 29th, stood there and took a look at the water heater and said it was rusted out and needed to be replaced. From my own experience I thought this was unlikely. Then he went out to look at the a/c. He didn't touch it, just said it was full of mice and also that it was too old for them to get parts for, and proceeded to give me a sales spiel for a new unit. This cost me almost $200 when you take into account GST. I said I'd think about it. They proceeded to bombard me with calls, asking me to call them and to leave a review. I didn't call them back, but am leaving a review. I did call another a/c company that was recommended by my old a/c-heating tech who has moved away. When they came out, the tech looked at the water heater and said it needed a new pressure release valve, which he installed. I asked him to do a maintenance check on the furnace while he was there. He told me all was fine except that the filter needed changing, which I did right then as I keep a stock of them. He also changed the humidifier filter. When he went out to the a/c, he asked me about the noise I'd heard and I told him. He took the cover off the unit, said there were no mice, washed a bit of dirt off the sides, ran the unit for a few minutes and said he could find nothing wrong and that the sound I heard must have been a temporary anomaly. So everything is fine, nothing needed to have the whole unit replaced, and I saved myself being scammed out of many thousands of dollars by getting a second opinion. I booked and prepaid for a yearly maintenance call on my a/c and furnace. The first appointment was scheduled for end of May, 2 days before I got a call saying that due to "emergencies" they would have to reschedule and not until July 25th. This morning I get another call due to "emergencies" they would have to reschedule until end of August. will not deal with them anymore. I wish I had something good to say but alas, no. The initial visit went all right and we were told that a part was needed for our furnace; we were also told it may take up to a week. We placed a call after a week and many times after. Messages were left...no call returned. My husband asked to speak to the Parts department...no can do. A month later, after enduring very cold temperatures, they called to say the part was in. Unbelievable. At no time, did anyone from this company call to assure us they were doing the best they could or to just keep up ANY kind of communication. Needless to say, after 3 and a half weeks passed, we called another company; they came, they installed in short order a new part and we are finally warm again. As we are 75+ years of age, sitting in a cold environment for such a long time, was beyond unacceptable. Boonstra installed a heat pump and furnace that they assured us would qualify for the government incentives. We were just informed that it does NOT. We spent over $40k--too much to start--and now don't qualify for the rebate at an additional cost of over $20k (loss of grant and interest-free loan cost). I contacted the sales rep a few time but no response. No one else has contacted me either. Incompetent at best, unethical at worst. Furnace wouldn't ignite last night, just as snow storm was starting. Hubby had the knowledge to manually fire it up for last night. Phoned Boonstra mid morning & left message. They returned our call within the hour and gave us a time that technician would arrive (between 2 & 5 pm). Just after 2pm received phone call that tech was on his way. Cory #8754 arrived, confirmed our diagnosis and had replacement part on truck. Was able to repair very quickly. Cory was very pleasant, easy to talk to, extremely professional. Ten years ago Boonstra arranged for installation of a gas line and gas furnace, and then added an a/c for me. The products and service function fine. But as a naive, first-time homeowner I made the mistake of following their advice to finance things. The interest rate was less than my credit card, and I was told that I could pay it early if I wanted, no problem or penalty. Big mistake! When I asked to pay in full, it turned out that I'd have to pay the full price plus ten years of interest plus a hefty fee, and that's only IF they let me break the contract, because apparently they could choose not to. I didn't. I accepted that I'd been naive to trust what someone was telling me instead of confirming it in print, continued making monthly payments, and chalked it up as an expensive life lesson. (Though to add insult to injury, when I re-mortgaged, I found out they'd put a LIEN on my house too. Why?!) And then today happened. I was getting a quote for converting the old and frankly illegal porch I'd inherited with the house for an accessible entrance and ramp. And you know what we discovered? Boonstra had the gas company attach the metre to the PORCH, several feet away from the house. Relocating the thing will cost several thousand dollars and they'll need to dig up the lawn. So -- again, no complaints about the furnace or a/c. But trusting this company has ended up costing me about $18,000 over and above the cost of the actual equipment, and I bitterly regret ever doing it. Hamilton Boonstra contractor lied about fault with our furnace, tagged and disabled it leaving our family without heat and then proceeded to do a sleazy sales pitch of overprice new equipment on the spot. Lied about our water tank needing replacing while he was at it. Local manager Omar was in on it and gave us a quote of $11,000 for $7,000 of equipment. No follow-up no nothing. I put up a positive google review on Saturday, after the sales guy left, promising me an 8am start time for a new furnace install the next morning (which, incidentally, I didn't really need, but decided to just get it done rather than risk yet another repair). I got up early and was ready for 8am, but the guys did not come until 9:40am. They installed my new furnace, didn't follow what we agreed with the sales guy, and, after they left, the furnace stopped working!! I booked a 6pm appointment for today with another service guy, and left my job early to meet at the agreed time. It is now 7:50pm and I have no service, no heat, and I've had to call twice to find out what's going on. I'm super frustrated and will no longer recommend Boonstra. Go somewhere more reliable where you don't get crappy service and terrible products. I had a terrible cough that day and asked him to wrap it up and email me a quote. Scott told me he would email me an estimate by the end of the week. Two weeks later, I was still waiting. I continued to call other companies for quotes and found everyone to be professional and fast. They gave me a quote on the spot. I'm not sure why Boonstra keeps it a secret. It is ridiculous! He has been a member with there warranty program since 2011 and needs a heat exchange replaced, we call constantly for updates with "parts still not in" as the response. Jan.7/2016- Hot water tank (no hot water), arrival was prompt. 15mins troubleshooting (Tech) *Bennett, called into the office to discuss how he was getting 120V everywhere. A short conversation and the call was over. He brought to my attention that the fix is my "gas valve" Level:4 $826 to replace/install. I decline and paid unhappily $146.84. Nil fix. Second opinion following day the fix was a $53 Flame switch Level:1 on Boonstra chart $239 replace/install. Grossly mistroubleshot. I called twice to discuss my dissatisfaction. First i spoke to a argumentative personal name Debra. For someone who couldn't attend to my customer complain she sure has a lot of negative words for me. 2 days later i called again and spoke with a more pleasant personal name Barb *i think was her name. Again i was promised a return phone call. That Call has never happen - its now Jan.14/2016. Looked in my Rheem manual to note that the troubleshooting guide clearly points out to replace "Flame Switch" before "Gas Valve" when Ignitor is energized, but gas valve does not open. Flame switch contacts stuck closed ignitor remains energized = change flame switch. Instead Boonstra techs decided to jump to the next part "gas valve" which was perfectly A-OK. I would've paid $826 plus taxes for a simple fix of a Flame Switch. I would never recommend this company, if based only on the fact they don't care enough to return call a dissatisfied customer over my concerns of misdiagnosis. If you flip over their receipt you'll see their 100% RIGHT Guarantees. Clearly states: If you are not satisfied that we have provided the RIGHT service, we will refund the cost of the service. (which i'm not - your troubleshooting wasn't followed properly as per Rheem manual, instead to decided to place the more expensive part by more the $900 I deserve a FULL refund of $146.84. The service I received from Boonstra's was fine my issue was with the billing. I got a voice mail a couple of weeks ago saying I owed $74. I called customer service to find out what the issue was. I found it odd as I pay $14.66 a month but I said ok and gave them my credit card information again, as they already had it. I also found this to be strange but I wasn't talking to billing at the moment so I gave them the info and told them to take the money on the first. I checked my credit card on the 5th of this month and saw that they had taken out the $73.30 as we had talked about, HOWEVER on the 2nd they took out $14.66 NINE times and an additional $14.66 on the 3rd!!!! So I called customer service back and the woman also thought it was odd and said she would get billing to call me back that day (I called at 10:00am) I received NO call back from them on that day so I was forced to call back the following day and was told that billing would call me back that day......again. I told the woman (who was very polite btw) that if I didn't receive a call back I would call my credit card company and file a complaint. They got back to me about 3 hrs later, finally. I was told that the company was sold last year and they had an issue with their billing. And somehow I owed them all the money ASIDE from the original $74 they had called me about. How is this right? They were sold and somehow forgot to bill me? I guess this is what happened because I was not given a full reasonable explanation. How could they have not figured this out earlier and informed me? Instead they wait, and BAIT & SWITCH me saying I owe $74 and then bill me TEN times for $14.66 on top of the $74. I find this to be outrageous and borderline fraud? A reputable company could have figured this out earlier and fixed it rather than waiting so long and trying to basically steal about $300 from me hoping I wouldn't notice? It's their mistake. They should have figured it out earlier. The kicker, that is my problem is that they put my card over its limit. Now I have to pay overage charges and to top it off I start my holidays this week and could really use the money they tried to take from me without noticing. Whoever bought this company needs to fire their billing department as I am sure I'm not the only one this has happened too. The government should probably look into their tax filings for this year as well since I'm sure they can't be on the up and up with this kind of behavior. It's sad really I never had an issue with Boonstra's service and the two women I talked to on the phone were very nice but I was basically told. "Too bad so sad. We made a huge mistake now you have to pay us all at once. Sorry!". They didn't even try to change the situation at all or work with me. They just gave me the original $74 they asked from me and kept the rest, that in my mind they STOLE from me. I wouldn't recommend their services to anyone. If a furnace happens to come up in conversation I will go out of my way to NOT recommended them. I would do 0 star if i could. My husband and I had and are still ongoing through a horrible experience with this company. We contacted them to change our a/c cooling unit in our condo. They sent their sales person "comfort expert" as they call, here who discussed the options with us. We got sold on a brand new cooling system with a 10 year warranty and even said it could be installed the day of. So we signed the contract confirming all the details and we were both impressed and relieved that we would get our cooling system before it gets too warm especially since we have a newborn baby and want him to be as comfortable as possible. A few hours later, after not hearing back on when they would come, we called back the sales guy who told us that actually they didn't have the system yet for our condo and that it would take about 3 weeks for them to get it. It was a bit disappointing but we were ok with it as long as we end up with our new a/c. As a courtesy they had sent a technician that night to see the unit and see if he could temporary fix it-which he could not. when asked if we could keep the current system running to move air around despite it having leaks, we were told "might as well run it to the ground you will get a new system anyways". 3 weeks later (last week) after again not hearing back from anyone at Boonstra we contacted the sales guy again who told us that it would arrive the next day. Next day still nothing, we called back again and were told that he would call us back later during the day. Next day, still nothing so my husband called and spoke with the project manager who told him that they ordered the wrong coil and that it would take another 5 weeks to get the right one and it will cost more money. My husband explained that we signed a contract for a whole cooling system and not just replacing the coil. Long story short, After MANY calls and Boonstra employees trying to pass the blame, even to us for their ignorance and mistakes and after being hung up on by the project manager, my husband ended up speaking with the manager who just simply said that there is nothing they can do and could not fulfill their contract. So basically, we signed a contract for a new cooling system (contract signed by Boonstra employee as well), waited a full month for nothing which leaves us now feeling disrespected and led on. To add to the matter we've waited a month in the heat with our baby, time we could've used searching for a company that fulfills their promises. Twice in the last 4 years something has gone wrong with our air conditioning/furnace. Both times we've called Boonstra's. The first time was a costly fix - but the work was done professionally, and the tech they sent explained what he was doing. When we had an issue with our air conditioning we didn't think of calling anybody other than Boonstra's - and I'm glad we did. Not only did they fix the problem the same day, within hours, they stuck by their "Always On Time... Or You Don't Pay A Dime!" guarantee. No arguing, no excuses, no fine print to back out of it. They literally fixed our air conditioning and left a $0 bill. Excellent technical expertise and efficiency, and they also have the absolute best customer service. I paid over a $1000 for a $100 part and less then 2 hours of labour. Same repair was quoted at $500 by another Time and Material HVAC tech from a different company. I recently engaged Boonstra to troubleshoot and fix issues with my Thermostat not functioning and was very disappointed with the way it was handled. While they are quite responsive to your call and can get the technician in the same day to your home, but, customer satisfaction does not seem to be of great importance to them and they are more focused on charging the customer a hefty fee. They engage technicians who are just beginning in their career and try to learn while experimenting on your system. I suggest that you do more research to find out alternative HVAC service provider before considering them. read more

Boonstra's (One Hour) Heating and Air Conditioning sold us a furnace and AC package in 2012. Additionally we dropped an additional $500 on a chimney liner for our HW heater and $265 on duct cleaning. As an incentive to purchase we were given 6 free tune ups in the form of six free tune up coupons, each valued at $127.00. Further, the advisor David Bitner, struck out and initialed the expiry dates. On calling to book a tune up this fall, I was informed that Boonstra's was no long Boonstra's One Hour and that my coupons, despite having no expiry date would not be honoured. The key name here folks is Boonstra's and the new Boonstra's, same address and phone number are snakes in suits. Don't trust them with your business. read more

So... a few weeks ago I booked an annual inspection to have Boonstra come out today for the furnace. Between noon and four is what was set. No problem. Just after 1:00 today I got a call that they had to cancel as they had so many people without any heat. They asked if I had heat coming out of the vents. "I don't know. It is SO MILD TODAY!!!!". I said that I booked this appointment well in advance as it was the only convenient day until December!!!! I guess I should have lied and said, "Look. I'm without heat come right away." "I need my furnace today as the temperature is only expected to get to 19 Celsius." I said, "Forget it" "Just cancel". So much for customer service. I'll go elsewhere with that kind of treatment. Recently had an issue with my furnace,no heat. Called Boonstra. The technician came out in a reasonable amount of time. After about 15 minutes the heat was back on. Great,I thought,that was an easy fix. Wrong,yes it was a dirty sensor,but after inspecting the rest of my furnace he found a bunch of issues. #1 cracked heat exchanger which could potentially leak co2 into the house $1200+ fix #2 fan motor would die in the next year $800,fix and #3 surface ignitor would go soon as well,$400. He recommended not to put any money into our 13 year old furnace but to spend $4000 on a new one.Well.sorry,but that's gonna happen. I told him we would get a second opinion.he offered another boonstra technician to check it. No thanks,we will go with another company. He then flagged my furnace with union gas and charged me $149 for the service call and shut off the furnace and the gas . Called a second company to come in,he found no problems,no cracks,tested for co2,nothing. Used the special camera to get in and show us that there were no cracks.Said the furnace was running great. His charge $65,but I did also have to pay $40 to have my furnace "unflaggged",which it should have never been flagged in the first place. Boonstra same to do the fall inspection on our furnace on Dec. 29th - 2 months late. When the technician arrived, he claimed to find corrosion on the secondary heat exchanger and shut the furnace down. He did no sampling for carbon monoxide. Because they came 2 months late, they have now created and emergency for me. They know the furnace is 22 years old, the lady who booked the appointment took pains to point that out. Naturally, a salesperson came to our door less than 2 hours later to sell us a new furnace. We called a reputable local company for a second opinion and the technician arrived a few hours later. After a careful inspection and air sampling, he declared the furnace sale and turned it back on. It is still running fine. We feel that Boonstra deliberately created this situation to sell us a new furnace while denying us the ability to shop around. We had a Boonstra maintenance program for almost 10 years. We cancelled it next day. Be very careful when dealing with Boonstra. read more
