Hey you've gotta get gas somewhere! None of us like to fill up. I am still in denial that you can…read moreno longer get your fuel pumped for you at a gas station. Some of you younger ones may not even know this existed but it did and it was fabulous! But... I digress. Thorntons is all right by me. The station is located on a busy corner in the Highlands BUT you have two streets for getting in and out. The convenience store is full of all kinds of snacks and drinks and staples most of which are pretty darn expensive BUT that's why they call it a convenience store. Quick to dash in and pick up that item you need but don't want to go to the grocery store to get. The store is kept pretty clean and the staff has always been courteous to me though I rarely go inside. I only go in to redeem points from the loyalty program which is pretty good considering how expensive gas is.

Finally! A Speedway in Louisville that actually has adequate parking spaces! I was beginning to…read morethink that this was just a thing that didn't exist in this city. Anyway, besides having adequate (and marked) parking spots, this Speedway also is set up in a way where you have adequate space to do your convenience store shopping. Yay! Some actual convenience at a convenience store! This Speedway was also quite clean and the people working were friendly. It's not the closest to my home, but I almost wonder if it is worth going a few miles out of my way to go here instead of the one's that. Are closer to me in town. It wasn't busy either, which may explain part of why the experience here was more pleasant as well or why it may be easier to keep clean, but I am just glad to find a Speedway I can go to and not feel like someone is about to hit my car before they leave or wonder if it will have open pumps (unlike the one I went to that had ZERO working pumps or the other Speedway that had maybe half of their pumps available). So, I'm hoping this place ends up being dependable, because I really do prefer Speedways to any other gas stations. Their Speedy Rewards club is far better than any other business's rewards program, because not only are points easy to get, but they add up quickly and can be redeemed for things you actually want (not just free fountain drinks, but even gift cards to many restaurants and stores, coupons for money off on gas, plus the choice of various food and drink options). I'll always love Speedway as a company, but this is my fave in Louisville thus far. It gave me faith that this company can have a decent store in this town again. So, maybe 5 stars seems like a lot, but compared to the other Speedways nearby (and other convenience stores btw) it's a real gem. I'm also really close to having enough points to get a few gift cards for people for Christmas (which is awesome because I'm pretty broke this year). Yay for Speedway! I'll definitely go back to this one again, tho, I now kind of want to check them all out (and of course review them all, ha).

I never thought that I would be writing a review for a convenience store but I feel compelled to…read morewrite about this one. First, its location is primo - in the heart of St. Matthews. And while St. Matthews has a lot going on, it lacks convenience stores and/or bodegas. In addition, the owner and the employees are always super friendly and kind. More than once I have forgotten my wallet and they let me take my items anyway, knowing I will come back as a loyal customer. When they were out of their fried chicken, they fried some just for us. They have also been doing a lot of remodeling, so the place offers even more products. It's just a great little store in a convenient location.

In the past month, they've felt unwelcome in the store. This evening, I walked my son and daughter up to the store so they could buy some candy. I waited outside. My son came out and said that once again, the man behind the counter was rushing him. The man said, "come on, hurry up" and was tapping his hands on the counter. This is the second time this has happened. There was another incident in which my son and his friend rode scooters up to the store. They propped their scooters up against the building and were yelled at and told that they would have to pay $800 if they damaged the building. So, they left and shopped elsewhere. After we walked home tonight I drove up there and politely asked the man if there was a problem with the kids being in the store. I explained the experiences my kids have had. I asked him if he told them to hurry up. He said that he did and went on to explain that a couple of weeks ago "20 kids" came in and they did damage to the store. I feel terrible that happened to him but I told him that my kids were not part of that group and have always been polite. Not to mention, the first time he rushed my kids was several weeks ago. I explained that we support his business. He said he didn't care if it my kids were not part of the group that caused problems. His exact words were, "I am not a Walmart. If you want to shop somewhere else, you can shop somewhere else. Kids have three minutes to shop in the store and that rule is for all kids." It is a bit disheartening that, after trying to talk to him and understand the situation better, he basically told me to shop elsewhere. We won't be shopping at the St. Matthews Mini Mart again. We love to support local businesses so this is a bit disappointing. If you have kids who like to shop there, you may want to supervise them.
