Founded by Swiss immigrant Felix Weidmann, the restaurant opened during Meridian's rise as one of the South's busiest railroad crossroads. During World War I, the restaurant temporarily relocated to Hattiesburg to help feed the thousands of soldiers training at nearby Camp Shelby. One of its quirkiest traditions is the complimentary peanut butter and crackers brought to every table. During World War II, butter rationing led the restaurant to serve peanut butter and crackers instead. Customers loved it so much that the tradition continues more than 80 years later. In 1935, when brothers Al and Fred Key took to the skies in their airplane, Ole Miss, they weren't just chasing a world record--they were trying to save Meridian's airport from closing during the Great Depression.
