Utterly insane process and clueless employees. They had the book I wanted, in stock, in the store I was going to. In order to buy the book at the sale price, I was told to go online, order the book and select "pick up in store". Otherwise, I would have to pay the full price, $8 more. I went along with the shenanigans, but obviously will never buy anything from Books-A-Million, in a million years. Worst of all the staff could not even understand how silly the whole process is. Here is a bricks and mortar book store which has actually improved over the last several years. I used to call it Books-A-Hundred due to the over abundance of $20 coffee table books and not much else. Lately, this store tends to have more magazines (which I love to peruse) and pretty good coffee! I may or may not buy a magazine, but I always buy something when I am there. I buy used books from the internet so my experience with books at BAM is limited, therefore I will not base my review on that aspect of their business. I go in BAM exactly once a year -- at Christmastime -- and it is mainly to buy small gifts/stocking stuffers. I may pick up a journal or a calendar or something like that (rare), but I am mainly there for the small trinket stuff that they have on racks and shelves near the registers for people like me who are too lazy to do any real shopping at more than one place and want to get everything all at once. They have everything from Jelly Belly jelly beans to rulers to computer accessories to desk art to Cadbury chocolate bars to flashlights to themed products, etc. You can easily find small gifts for kids and adults alike, all in one condensed area. I usually end up spending around $30. All is well until you get to the register. That is when the reason I dislike BAM emerges. The first thing they ask you is whether or not you have their BAM discount card (savings card? whatever?) If you don't, then it begins. They start in on how much you can save on this and future purchases if you BUY the discount card for $25 or $29 (I forget which) per year. Well, you only save 10%, sometimes 20% and I only come in once a year and spend $30, so it would be ridiculous for me to buy a "discount" card for $25 or $29, now wouldn't it? Then, once I have managed to convince the clerk why the "discount" card is not right for me, he whips out a sheet with all these magazine titles on it and says, "As a thank you gift for shopping with us today, you get 2 free magazine subscriptions...which 2 would you like?" All I really want at this point is to stop being held hostage by this 20-something dude with a man bun, get my receipt and leave before I go all Christmas crazy right there in BAM. They are way too pushy with the discount cards and add-ons. Ask me if I have it. If I don't, ask me if I want it. If I am interested, I will inquire about the details. If I don't, drop it already. One of the last beating pulses of light in an otherwise quiet Anderson Mall. Authors and coffee slouching in chairs where an energetic magazine rack still wakes to bring in the crinkle of plastic sacks and shopping bag finger burn in all in. There was a Books A Million in Peachtree City, Georgia. I went there to catch up on engineering work and $2.00 biscotti. One of the clerks there produced and hid magazines, out with the month's old, in with the week's new. She called me her one day son-in-law and was sweet to me the way only imaginary mothers-in-law could be. She always wanted me to meet her daughter and spoke of her and her achievements. So I tutored her daughter, a few years younger than me, contemplating grad school, in physics. This place is like that place. One day hopefuls paging through pages, spines of career aspirations lined up in geometric vanishing points, Home and Garden (now supplanted by Garden and Gun) with dog eared pages, all racked and polished, glossy--it has that same voice. It is telling me about the sons and daughters, clerks and chemical engineers, that still daydream here or linger longer on their phones until the hot Southern thunderstorms pass. Someone drops a magazine and it lands like a voice, "How are you doing? When did you leave Georgia for California?" Anderson Mall apparently used to have a Gap. My wife used to work there. I had to ask a sales clerk to help me find a book by a particular author. She found it in less than five minutes. When I checked out, the young man asked if I had a card with BAM, but I did not. He helpfully described the benefits without being overly long. I declined and that was it. Great experience. read more

They might as well just call it the men's only restroom bc I dk any woman that would sit on or even near that thing. Reeked of urine too. read more

Today we were book shopping with our two children. We were both in the philosophy section having selected to purchase among others a silk bound tome of bushido history. The two kids age 5 and 7 were cheerily playing with the stockpile of toys invading every inch of the floor space and many of the shelves for the holidays. We were told by an employee who walked up that the store had a "no sitting" policy. This was his way of suggesting that children playing were highly unwelcome. I asked him in response what he believed to be the purpose of the book store. He replied it was a retail store there for making money. I felt sorrow that these days people have such little concept of the significance of their chosen occupation and place of employment. We quietly sat down the armful of books we had intended to purchase, and in parting I suggested if children were unwelcome they should choose not to deal in toys. We then left the store never to return. That is why Amazon will put you out of business, books a million, because you're employees are inconsiderate bigots and you deserve it. read more

So I had a couple books in my closet and wanted to sell them so I went to books a million but when the lady was done checking all the books she said everything was great. Mind you all the books came to a price of 100$+. So when she said how much money I would get I was upset to discover that all I got was 1,00$ and 45 cents you heard me right one dollar and 45 cents for books that cost 100$+ i am never coming back. But they do have an amazing sushi place right next to them. read more

The manager made it very obvious that he does not annoy children being in his store and people are NOT allowed to sit in their store either. Apparently there is a policy against sitting and looking at books. He said the main purpose of their business was to make money. He is poorly informed as to what a book stores purpose is. read more

Found a clearance item a blizzard cute but deadly mystery bag without rh box even after we gave them the UPC code and showed them the item from Google exactly what it was etc still wouldn't sell it much less at th 50% off as sticker on bag advertised I offered to pay full price even and still wouldn't sell it bc it would mess up their inventory but.... it wasn't even in their inventory so.... very unhappy calling management about it just bc I want begin to explain my other unsatisfactory opinions and experiences there just.... no wonder only 3 exists all I got to say read more

Searched for about an hour for a book to meet my need since they didn't have the one I originally wanted. Went to the register to check out... stood and waited for someone. Once she came she asked if I was going to save 10% as a member... i responded with no, I'm not. She then proceeded to ask if I wanted to sign up... No, I am not from here. Then I played 20 questions with her... Where do you live? There are no BAM near you? No... the closest one is an hour away. What was your favorite book growing up? (Really??) I proceeded to pull up a coupon off of Retail me not. Her response was... those are the same coupons our members get. I Don't want to be a member... she proceeded to tell me that only members could use them. I just said... you can keep these books... and walked away. Placed my order with amazon and the book I originally wanted will be delivered Wednesday... and was cheaper. read more

The manager here, John, is very very rude and incompetent. The way he treats and speaks to his employees is disrespectful and degrading. I should not be able to walk through a store and hear him disrespecting an employee. But other than that you get amazing help and the atmosphere is welcoming.
