This place has slightly odd opening hours - but it's understandable as it's run by volunteers. The…read morealtruistic reasons to shop here are quite obvious - the proceeds go to Oxfam's projects and you're reducing waste by buying second-hand copies of books instead of new editions. The practical reasons are fairly self-explanatory too: you get a much larger and weird range of books to browse at a second-hand store, and they are cheaper! I do feel the store might do a little better if it was within a shopping strip of some kind, but it isn't entirely out of the way. The books here are well-sorted and there is a wide variety of new and old. Some secondhand bookshops lie on the pricey side, but this one is very reasonable. I would rate this as one of the best second-hand bookstores in Adelaide.

There's even a separate section for new Australian Literature: at two bucks a pop who wouldn't? Oxfam have an extensive memoir and biography section with creepy titles such as 'How I survived Being Left to Die in a Closet' and 'Letters from a Christian Citizen.' Fun browsing to be had. Considering how cheap everything is, the store is impressively organised with very specific sections of Non-Fiction and everything in Author A-Z. The short story section is one of the biggest in Adelaide and the kids and classics areas have seats so you can sit next to the wall of books and crane your neck all afternoon. I walked out of here with nine books at the price of fourteen dollars. Oxfam makes me so happy I want to sing.

It isn't as if all of the classy people regularly wander down Hindley Street, even during the day. However while it may be located in a rather unusual location, it is one of those bookshops that sells books that generally are not found in your average, run of the mill, corporate bookshop. In fact don't expect to see the latest fads or best sellers here, but rather books that are actually quite useful, whether they have a practical purpose, or simply stimulate the imagination. Personally I haven't been here all that much, but if you like good books, then it is definitely a place that is worth checking out. I have to admit that I was pretty impressed. I was particularly impressed with its collection of plays and their poetry section.

I'm always impressed by the range of books kept. In my to pet areas, Theatre and Philosophy, they have a far larger and higher quality range than in any other bookstores. They also work hard to keep many new books, so I'm always finding something exciting (Like A.C.Grayling's REWRITING of the bible; sounds pretentious when you say that, but he's done it really well, calling it the Secular Bible and breaking it down to it's maxims, proverbs and lamentations.) I promise myself that this time I won't spend money but oh, then I see Jeanette Winterson's newest book and I am lost. The section that really gets me excited is the whole bookcase devoted to playscripts. It's always been difficult to find modern scripts, so it's great to know where a good collection is hiding. Add to that the neat and sophisticated layout of the show (lovely wooden structures covered in shiny new books) and the classical or jazz music playing quietly, and you have yourself a wonderful place. Now all I can ask for is a couch in the corner for testing. Though they've probably tried that and gotten sick of prying people like me out of it.

I am not sure whether too many people know about this store. Which is such a damn shame…read more Unfortunately when ever I go there it is not busy. This really sucks! Maybe it is the position of the store, it is set up in a small complex off Main Road in Blackwood. The signage could be better. I actually stumbled across the store when I was stopping in the pet supplies store next door. I absolutely love books so much and I am constantly looking for cool book destinations. In particular, I prefer second hand books. There are so many classics out there that I love to add to my book collection. What will you find here? Well, actually everything! Classics, educational, fiction, children's, history, building, etc... You name it, you will probably find the book you need here. The shop is seriously jam-packed. All of the walls and shelving are covered. So, be prepared to spend a little time here having a good look. Also, if you are having troubles locating what you are after, be sure to speak to the lovely owner. He is such a gentleman and happy to help you find what you need! There are two types of books I am constantly looking for: Philosophy and classic children's books. Weird mix, I know. But, these are two types of books I love. I have found some great titles here including David Hume (Philosopher) and The Magic Faraway Tree (Classic Children's). Please do go out of your way to find this store, you will not regret it!

On the other hand, if you happen to want help it's there for the asking and the people offering it actually know what they are talking about which makes a refreshing change. There are books there on any topic the average book buyer could want and then some. It's a place best visited when you have time to browse and wallow in the offerings on display; it takes time as just when you think you've seen it all you turn a corner and find more bookcases. It's a book lovers wonderland. Prices are better than in any other bookshop I've visited. I realise the above probably sounds over effusive, but if you visit BBE I guarantee you'll leave with great books and a big smile on your face. I know, I've done it! LV

They stock those discount book and gift box sets you see everywhere which make great present to store in the gift box for when you're invited to something with little notice. There is a really good selection of wedding invitation stationery and lots for arts and crafts. I'm not certain, but when Angus and Robertson went into receivership, it became Dillon's bookshop. Dillon's stacks up pretty well in a city where it is notoriously hard to track down niche titles. They've got all the main(stream) suspects and a couple of surprises thrown in: I managed to uncover a Danish fashion mag, Stella, the other day which I haven't seen anywhere else. Alas, with no Borders and no Mag Nation (...yet), I still head online for a lot of my magazine purchases, but for everyday titles and a few imports like UK Elle and Vogue it's very much worth a visit. That out of the way, Dillon's also has an impressive range of gift ware: from V&A gift cards to Christmas trinkets galore, Moleskine diaries and scented candles, it's a pleasant mishmash and a go-to for all my last minute pressie runs. The craft and stationery section is also stocked, it's overpriced in my view but there is a huge selection. The staff are always friendly and plentiful.

The first thing I spotted upon entering this store was the Candace Bushnell novel 'One Fifth…read moreAvenue' sitting smugly in the literature section. This was quite a blow and I staggered backwards in horror, smashing my elbow on the rear shelving in the process. Seeing this sort of absolute rubbish languishing in between William S. Burroughs and A.S Byatt made the bile rise in my gullet, but I swallowed and attempted to give this store a fair trial. Booked has an excellent non fiction range, the very latest children's picture books and a nice long bench in the corner for kids to sit and browse on. I also noticed staff calling kids coming in by name, and allowing them to hang and paw through numerous books at their leisure. This sort of relaxed and encouraging attitude to kids in book stores is excellent. But I do have to note that the books weren't cheap, with Julian Barnes's sense of an Ending (150 pages mind you) costing $30. I was heartened by the $9.99 book shelf at the front but was sad to see a number of them were quite damaged. Nice store, good range, but dear God if I find the author of 'Trading Up' in the literature section again, I'll go all cuckoo like Burroughs in the London Years.

I was caught by the large hardcover of the complete works of Jane Austen, a beautiful piece for collection or a gift for only $50. As the only bookshop in the vicinity, it caters well to most needs. It is not overly cheap, but it's no more expensive than other independent bookshops.

They have a large range of, well, everything. Their magazines are spread across three enormous, two sided displays, and cover everything from cooking, gardening, gossip, women's and men's health, puzzles, all kinds of hobbies and lots of special interest. It was the special interest that amused me the most, with magazines dedicated to Ancient Egypt, boar hunting, stamp collecting, cats and dogs and a much more. My only disappoint with the magazine collection was their complete lack of great Australian literary magazines; no Overland, Voiceworks, Meanjin, or even our local Wet Ink. Very sad. The store is currently overflowing with 2010 diaries and back to school stationary. Their arts and craft section is also impressive, with a huge range of paper for invites or decoration, as well as paints and brushes, and even an easel. Some of their wedding invites paper was beautiful, at $20 for 5 sheets! I gasped and put it back, carefully.
