There are so many welcoming, talkative shop owners in the town, then you walk into Westwood and get glared at like you're about to shove The Tale of Tom Kitten under your pack-a-mac (personally, I'm more of a Jemima Puddleduck / Mrs Tiggywinkle kinda girl). Not a great way to be greeted. Secondly, you can actually find cheaper second hand books in other stores in Sedbergh, like the Tourist Information Centre book shop. And thirdly, their fiction section isn't as ample as I'd like it to be. If you're into history, travel, gardening, reference books, walking guides and art then you'll probably find something to suit you at Westwood. But if, like me, you prefer your literature a little less 'real' and a means of escaping the mundanities of modern life, you won't have a great deal to choose from. Two positives about Westwood though: you can help yourself to their coffee machine and use their toilet if nature calls as you're stuffing books into your pockets. Result!

Most are secondhand but there are a few new volumes on offer on the ground floor as well. The shop is divided into handy areas to help you find the kind of book you're after, but I invariably find myself browsing in nearly all of them just to see what's there. The fiction section is very strong and reasonably priced. You can pick up a hardback novel in decent condition for less than a fiver. Unfortunately in my case that just means I buy more! It's not a shop to visit if you're in a hurry as you can spend hours in there (and probably should or you'll miss a lot) and it might be dangerous (for your wallet) to go in without a spending limit in mind

I do like to look at the highly-detailed quality items though. The shop also caters for childrens toys, board games and novelty gifts too. Worth a look inside, no matter how big a kid you are.

Their very creative shop engraves gorgeous crystal objects, everything from a set of personalized wine glasses, to any image you care to have deeply etched into a memorial glass, to impossibly delicate butterflies sculpted to form a crystal bowl. Words don't do their artful craft justice, I suggest you check out their web site to see samples of their work for yourself. For me, they created on lovely crystal a personalized memento of my trip through this astoundingly scenic area, as well as a deeply meaningful image of a loved one whom I had lost recently. I was very moved when I saw the results. I also know that they have created treasured heirlooms worthy of the royals, for whom they have created masterpieces on special occasions. Located discreetly in the back of the shop, there hangs a picture of The Queen watching as the master craftsman creates one of his pieces for her. I understand that crystal engraving at this level is a dying craft, so if you happen to be in this picturesque area you owe it to yourself to pay this little shop a visit.

I discovered Car & Kitchen during my first visit to Settle which was in August 2015. It was closed…read morewhen I found it in the early evening but an examination of the lunchtime menu in the window convinced me that it was the place for me to have my lunch next day. When I returned for lunch, I ordered what I had already chosen on the previous evening, namely the lentil and carrot soup with the salmon sandwiches. I expected it to good and it was even better, so much so that when I arrived in Settle for a return visit a year later, I visited Car and Kitchen twice, the first visit being in late afternoon when they only had drinks and pastries. I opted for a cafetiere and crumpets with Nutella. Having had only rather disappointing coffee during my previous week in East Anglia, I suddenly had the first seriously good coffee of my holiday. This was an un-plunged glass cafetiere containing enough grounds as to be opaque. I returned at lunchtime next day and ordered exactly what I had for my lunch a year previously, both to remind myself how good it was and also to get better photographs of it. I had another cafetiere to confirm that I wasn't dreaming the previous day and I also had crumpets with butter. The only disappointment was that the crumpets were served at the same time as the mains, when it was obvious that they would not stay hot for the time that it takes to consume the soup and sandwiches.

Mixed in amongst these are a few things for the garden. The strangest product they sell is the local beer from Dent Brewery in the neighbouring valley. Why the florist sells this and yet none of the local pubs or the off-licence do is a complete mystery to me! They do sell flowers of course. These are usually the traditional range - things such as carnations, chrysanthemums and roses, depending on the time of year, and you will find a selection in the buckets outside on the pavement.

The cottage museum is right across from the castle and you might miss it if you're not looking…read moreclosely! It's only open a few hours a day in the summertime, but if you're popping in for a castle tour, it's worth a visit. They usually have a lady inside dressed in period clothing, explaining how someone would have lived in a cottage that size. The museum is very tiny (watch your head, especially into the loft) and very hands-on. Every time I go, there are children in there looking totally enthralled, and the guide is always very good with them.
