Actual. Toy. Heaven!!…read more I'm a big kid at heart, and one of my favourite things about being a parent is getting to play with toys again yaaay!! Leeds City Centre is desperately lacking toy shops, so when it came to buying Xmas presents for the Mini MacDoos and their friends time around I found myself with little choice other than jumping on the bus and heading down to Birstall retail park to have a mooch round Toys R Us. When I got there and walked in I was completely overwhelmed. I had no idea where to start! I was very glad I hadn't taken the kids with me as I think they might have quite literally exploded with excitement. Which would have made a terrible mess. Aisle after aisle of the stuff of every kids wildest dreams. Action toys. Role playing toys. Educational toys. Cuddlies. Cars. Electronics. You name it, they've got it. There are sections for all the different characters of the moment, I almost peed mutants with excitement when I saw the Hello Kitty section!! Only downsides for me really are that it's not the cheapest place in the world for toys, but if you're not quite sure what you're after it's worth going there to get some inspiration. If you've got a smartphone it's easy enough to check online to see if you can get an item significantly cheaper elsewhere, and the experience of shopping there is so fab that for me it's worth paying an extra pound or so for an item. The other thing, obviously, is that it's not in the city centre, and if you don't drive, then Birstall retail park isn't the easiest or cheapest place to get to (however you can always compensate yourself for the inconvenience by heading over to the Krispy Kreme shop for a treat while you're there!) So all in all it gets a thumbs up from me. If you're young at heart, get yourself there and pretend you're Tom Hanks in Big!!

I found myself queing outside this store on a cold December morning trying to get hold of the number 1 toy for Christmas 2009. I rang the night before and was told they were expecting a delivery the following day. When I arrived there was a small queue outside once the doors opened it was well organised and there was no pushing or shoving staff handed you the items you asked for. I was really pleased. This store has so many types of toys it is amazing I bet kids would be happy to spend the whole day there if you would let them.

Really helpful place and didn't even mind my kids running around and wanting to buy everything…read morehaha. Guess they get that with kids everyday! Had a huge range of choice and aswered all the questions/queries I had of a few items but all in all a sound place to take your kids and get what they keep nagging you to get. Wasn't pricey either so didn't burn a huge hole in my pocket like it usually does with a day in town with the kids.

The attitudes of the 2 female staff in this shop last Sunday were an absolute disgrace. Finally when we asked for a bag for our purchases we were twice flat out refused, even told that they didn't have any (there was a full wall of bags pinned up behind them) and that we hadn't bought enough to warrant a bag. Eventually after insisting a 3rd time on a bag and even offering to pay for one, my items were smashed into a bag whilst my family was scowled at like vermin. Before leaving I asked for the name of the owner and said I would be making a complaint, I was sneered at and sarcastically told 'good luck with that'. I will never set foot in that shop again, which is a shame as the young lad who has served us in the past had been so helpful. This was over a week ago now and I'm still extremely vexed about it, that's how bad their behavior was. Treating your children to a toy should be a pleasant experience and I have always tried when possible to support small local businesses but from now on I will shopping on Amazon.

Of course I am starting to think that this may all be a trick of the mind and at 5 or 6 years of age ones priorities left me somewhat blinkered to anything else around but said stores! Today though there is a definte lack of toy shops. Even in the big department stores there seems to be a smaller range of toys, with small shop space given over to electronic games. Toys R Us as we all know is a toy megastore, something which had me torn between the thought of how great it would have been as a kid to have such a massive aladdins cave to search through and the slightly sad idea of bringing the kids to basically Tesco Toys Megastore. I soon forgot such rubbish when I was confronted by tons of toys including Star Wars figures and there I was 5 years old again and genuinely excited when I saw reissue Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi figures by the original Kenner manufacturer! Oh, nostalgia, it aint what it used to be.
