The Bookseller is a very small second-hand book shop in an old building on Sedbergh Main Street. It has a very beautiful and eye-catching sign featuring a painting of the Howgill Fells, and once inside the shop it's very nice not only to look at but also to be in, with tall wooden shelves on all sides and an amazing view out of the window of Winder Fell. Recently they have rearranged the shelves and removed a central stack so there is more room to move around, and they have opened up the rear of the shop so that it is now a browsing area, where it previously held the counter. I find the new arrangement a bit off-putting as you are confronted by the owner and the counter as soon as you come in - before they were a bit hidden at the back.
The best thing about the Bookseller is that they have some gorgeous old children's books with fabulous illustrations which you don't find so often in the other book shops. However they can be a bit pricey, which is a shame. read more
