There are many other tours you could take but this one fit our schedule. It runs almost every hour starting at 11am in Spring and a Summer.

The main cruising company is Stiphout, who offer a good selection of cruises , ranging from a 20-minute trip up the river to the St. Pietersberg caves to longer trips to Liege or Vise. We took the cruise up to the caves, and found the boat well turned out, with the woodwork highly polished. There's a large, comfortable lounge, in which we had a beer, and in which meals can be served on some cruises. A commentary was given in Dutch, French and English, and the whole thing made for a pleasant experience, at a reasonable price. However, the 'Old Timer' bus tour of Maastricht , also operated by Stiphout was rather disappointing. The bus itself was interesting; either a traditional American school bus, or a very good replica. And, the route took in most of the sights. However, you don't get a very good view out of the bus, especially if you're in one of the aisle seats. The commentary is given only in Dutch. Now, if you don't speak that language, you're given a 'translation sheet' in your chosen language, but that means you spend a lot of time reading, and trying to marry up the sheet with the commentary with the aid of a map that goes with it, rather than looking around. But, the sheet is very informative, and the map a good one although even if you speak Dutch, you can't see much out of the bus. Maybe a 'hop on/hop off' service would be a better experience?

Our guide was so knowledgeable & funny with our group. I highly recommend to do this if you find yourself in this lovely city. It is cheap too, maybe 6 euros. There's also a cute restaurant next to the caves, we didn't go there, but if we planned better, we would have. It is a nice view of the city.

From centree maastricht the northern caves are approx 25 minute walk. I bought to tickets beforehand at the tourist office website. With a group of 25 we gathered near the chalet and went underground for approximately an hour. There was a Dutch and English tour. The guide was - especially for kids- very entertaining. We learned a lot about the caves but also history of the area. Tip - buy ticket online beforehand. They can sell out quickly - it is 10 c. Pack something warm in summer

The Christmas Market is held in Vrijthof Square. There is plenty of gluhwein, brockwurst, sweets…read moreand other things to eat during this festive event. There are rides, a ferris wheel, a carousel and an ice skating rink. Of course there are masses of people laughing, eating, drinking and enjoying the event. The Christmas Market goes from November 28th to December 29th. The Christmas market is open Mondays through Wednesdays from 11.00 to 20.00, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10.00 to 22.00 and Sundays from 12.00 to 18.00.
