The Remember Museum 39-45 is a private museum owned and operated by Marcel and Mathilde Schmitz. They have created the museum on their own property and have invested their own time and treasure to make it grow.
Marcel was a 7 year old kid when the war rolled across Belgium. He and his family lived on a farm. They struggled through the war and managed to survive.
When the American Army finally freed Belgium in early 1945, a group of GIs set up a mobile kitchen in a pasture on Marcel's family farm. He made friends with the Americans. He liked them a lot. The GIs gave food to his family and gave chocolate bars - the first he had ever tasted - to Marcel.
Marcel has not forgotten American soldiers and the American way of kindness and generosity. He and Mathilde host American veterans whenever they visit. They pick them up at the airport, bring them to their home, entertain them and do everything they can to show their appreciation.
The Museum features several rooms of exhibits with genuine artifacts, uniforms, gear, tanks, jeeps, trucks and even a V-1 rocket - all gathered from the local area. You'll see an outstanding collection in every room.
Marcel and Mathilde are on hand every day. When you visit they will greet you at the door and give you a personal tour.
They collect oral histories from veterans; we watched the recording of a live interview with a 92 year old vet who was visiting. Marcel and Mathilde preserve the stories and tell the tales, so that the tragedy of war will never be repeated.
The museum mission is simple: TO REMEMBER.
