Two of my three passes across the Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge were rather scary. The bridge is located at the southwest end of Lake Superior and with the wind/cold coming down from Canada, the bridge was a challenge in my sprinter van. Aside from the crosswind that kept trying to push me into the next lane, my first evening pass of the bridge was nearly completely fogged in with very low visibility!
The bridge is quite elevated, 120 feet above the Saint Louis Bay and carries US Highway 2 to join Duluth Minnesota with Superior Wisconsin. It is over two miles long with about 1.5 miles over water.
The bridge is named for Richard Ira Bong, a pilot during World War II who was named the "Ace of Aces." There is no toll to cross this bridge. Use extreme caution!
