Oh my neck! Oh, my back! Oh my neck AND my back! This was a great run! I normally do my jog at Rice solo, but with a group of 80 or so runners helping set the pace (different paces: sprinters, joggers, walkers), I was highly motivated to move faster, do less stops and refrain from any detours at the Farmer's Market for some yummy goods. Dave does a wonderful job making the sign in table a breeze. It's FREE, so all you need to do is show up (first timers sign a onetime waiver; repeats have to check in each time) and you're good to go. Make sure you're there on time, because the run starts at 6pm sharp. (You might catch a few late comers sprinting across the parking lot to catch up.) Awaiting you at Brian O'Neill's after the run is a FREE energy filled buffet of pasta and salad, along with water. There's also FREE Red Bull Energy bevs before your run, and Skinny Dip beer. I am new to Houston so when an acquaintance told me about this running club I thought it would be something cool to try out. I'm so happy I did! Its a really good, diverse group of people that are in this club (and not all Oil & Gas people like everywhere else in Houston!). While I've been told its not as overtly friendly as other running clubs I've found that when you start a conversation with someone there they are pretty open. I've made a bunch of good friends now through this club. Every Tuesday between 5:30 and 7:30pm you sign into a table that is right in front of the Gorgeous Gael bar and they have announcements on the table for upcoming events and sometimes sponsors have giveaways (I got free running socks once!). After the run you can snag a free Buffalo Bayou beer and there are food and drink specials all night ($5 runners special is legit!). They also have TVs both inside and outside so you can catch any game that might be playing. I enjoy running alone, so I will caution that if you are looking to run with a pack of people this might not be for you but, lets be serious, the real reason I am part of a running club is for the drinks and socializing after which BON has plenty of! read more

I have to imagine that this is one of the better running clubs (if not the best) in Houston. Free. Rewards for checking in so many times and running with others. 5k or 10k Tuesdays (your choice) with free food. Organized runs if you're training on Thursdays and Saturdays. The running circuit is a well shaded gravel trail that goes around Rice University. So its not too hard on the feet and the sun doesn't beat down on you the whole time. Rice University peeps are pedestrian-aware and typically yield to oncoming runners (just as long as they can see you). After 20 runs you get a 50% off a massage, and 30 runs earns you a free cool cup, and there is a perk at 50 runs, but I forgot. The big prize of course is 100 runs.... This run is a 5k through around the Rice University which is a dirt path. During your run you will encounter the following: Nice oak trees (providing much needed shade, you suck HEAT) Elegant homes The light rail and train Business buildings Farmers market Eye candy for both sexes (weeeeeeeeeeeeee for the women =P!) Based on the other reviews you'd think this event was set up by Jesus. Beer is not free unless you have a shirt. This is not advertised anywhere, even at the actual event until you try to get said free beer. Also, its not Skinny Dip from New Belgium, it was MGD 64. I have standards as far as beer goes, so even if its free, I'm not drinking 64 calories of piss beer anyways. Free food is pretty crappy salad and pasta, but what did you expect? its free. read more

Oh, the things I'd do for beer. And boy let me tell you, there aren't too many things I wouldn't do for beer, especially when I'm a few beers in already. Luckily for my liver, my need to continue in life DUI-free, and my self esteem - easily shatterable by an unseemly beer gut, there are other things I like more than beer, and running is one of them! Especially when, as it is in this case, I am virtually running to beer! Here are some great things about Brian O'Neils Running Club which probably haven't already been adequately flushed out in the prior reviews: 1. Running Rice's 3.1 mile/5K running trail prior to reaching Brian O'Neils insures against over-consumption of alcohol. Here's why: - you're kinda sweaty and stinky and you probably have about 1, or at most 2, hours before you really really begin to reek. Therefore, a few beverages is probably all you can squeeze in anyway. - oddly enough, you prefer water! No kidding. You have just perspired 64 to 128 ounces of sweat (which will lead to the reeking mentioned above). The cool moistness of a cold one is eventually lost on you as you realize YOU NEED WATER! - you cherish the sense of accomplishment you've obtained from each of the 300 calories you've burned in the last 45 minutes of grueling misery, hobbled by darkness and miscreant tree roots, motivated to continue only by said beers mentioned above, as well as the swarm of people breezing by you - including a man no younger than 80 years old - and your feeble attempts to not look utterly pathetic. After enduring all of this, you realize that while you could manage to down 3 Guinness in 1 hour or less, doing so would leave you about 300 calories fatter than you were before you started the run. And, being the progressive, forward-directed runner/drinker that you are, that outcome is unacceptable. - you're tired. It's 3 miles. You're not a Kenyan runner. You're tired. And the beer isn't helping. So 1...maybe 2, but you want a shower and a horizontal orientation. 2. It's Tuesday. What else are you doing? Seriously, if you have a better idea for a Tuesday, let me know about it. 3. Think of this as a down payment on the rest of your week of fun. I always feel better letting it all hang out on a Friday or Saturday when I didn't spend the week letting it all hang out Sunday through Thursday. 4. And as far as "it all hanging out", yeah, I'm talking about the gut. This run is going to help with that. In addition to all these less-mentioned rationales for running with BON, there are all the reasons you can read about in these other wonderful reviews: the free gifts and treats, the discounted beer, the "eye candy" as one guy put it (I enjoyed that review). What kind of sick twisted individual would lure people with free beer and free food only to tell them that they can't have any of it until after they run 3.1 miles ?!?! oh yeah...that person would be Dave L. This is the best idea since putting 8 hot dogs per pack and 12 hot dog buns per pack . Dave you are a f'n genius ! This run is very well organized and extremely welcoming of everyone of all running levels. Unlike Dave L, I'm not part Nigerian and Kenyan so my run time is measured by how much sand has past through the hour glass. Even at my pedestrian pace I felt extremely comfortable running and even found others who ran at my pace to run with. Afterwards the camaraderie is awesome. Feeling the effects of the endorphins everyone is friendly and welcoming. Ok, even after the endorphins wears off everyone is still very friendly..... I encourage everyone to try this run. I have no doubts that once you try it, you'll be completely hooked. If running doesn't keep you coming back..all the great people there will. It may not have been Dave's idea but he did find out about it and reached out to the sponsors and put it all together. Congrats! Dave. The Rice track is great with the beautiful backdrop of the University, Rice Stadium, and the Live Oak trees. The track is a little narrow, but all the shade makes up for it. Brian O'Neill's has been the gracious host and the bartenders have been awesome. If you need a pick me up after work, before the run Red Bull has thrown in a few cans of their stuff to help you out. And finally New Belgium Brewery, free beer. When the free beer does run out, Brian O'Neills has great drink prices till 9pm. I typically run 3-4 times a week at Memorial Park and I'll end up drinking beer at home when I'm done. Here we can run, drink free beer, eat free pasta and ceasar salad, and make some new friends. I was surprised with the first week there were 20+ runners and even more surprised with this week, there were 40+ with 75 runners signed up. read more

I never heard of BON running club until I saw an upcoming event on Yelp. I wouldn't say I am an avid runner, but I do try to run a couple times a week to get my cardio in. Stephen Y, Kim P, and I started going to the new BON running club that is hosted at Straits in City Centre. This is a FREE event where all you do is show up, run 5k, and then come back for some drinks and food! The best part about it is that it's completely free and you feel great after you run. I have only been twice and I love it (esp the food afterwards)!! Kim P and I usually just plop down next to the food and stuff our faces!!! Next time, I have to learn self control and not eat too much, maybe. This is the best thing ever! You know how your parents always tell you there's no such thing as a free lunch? Well, here's your free dinner, drinks included, and all you do is get your lazy butt off that couch and move your legs one after the other, AND it doesn't really matter how fast you do it. Signup is quick and easy and everyone is really welcoming. The Rice track is beautiful, and the course is about 3 miles or 5k long. I've been running on this track regularly before this, and hearing about this group just makes me more excited to get out and run each Tuesday. One small warning for this run is that recently, it's been quite dark out, so be sure to wear something shiny so that people can see you and also be wary of some uneven spots on the course. It can be quite easy to trip, even though I'm sure that's just me being clumsy ol me. Afterwards, chow down on past and salad buffet, and don't forget your ID so you can take advantage of that free beer. Yup, free beer. Nuff said. read more

I have been running here for the past 5+ years and really enjoy it. First of all, it's close to my house, but more importantly, the 3 mile running loop is located around Rice University. All of those pretty, old trees lining the streets really provide a good amount of shade on those sunny, hot and humid days here in Houston. But I really like the club, for the perks! The "run" usually starts at 6pm every Tuesday night and I think they let a group go every 30 minutes. But if you enjoy running solo, you can go and sign in and then be on your way, without having to wait for a group. (This is what I do). The perks! Every time you show up, be sure to sign in so you can start to accumulate the goodies. It's free to run and everything else you earn in addition to a healthier you, is a bonus! After your first 10 runs, you get a free BON Running Club shirt (previously Brian O'Neill's - now the Gorgeous Gael). This shirt earns you a free beer every Tuesday, when you wear your shirt! Keep running though, because the goodies get better! The goodies are awarded at run 25, 50, 75 and 100. I think there are some more in between, but those are the ones I remember. My favorite was my 75th run wear I earned my BON Running Club (Brooks) jacket! And then also my 100th run where I earned a $100 gift card to Gorgeous Gael! Come out! It's a good way to get your exercise on, socialize, meet new people, and enjoy a free beer, all while slowly earing goodies! Dogs are welcome! I'm not great with routines, especially exercise routines. I work better with incentives so when I read on Yelp about this and the free beer, I had to check it out. My wife and I showed up the first time early this Spring and upon arrival, we were a little confused about the check-in and the club motivation. Even though it was a little crowded, Dave Lee, the founder of the club greeted us and explained the laptop check-in. He made us feel very welcome and impressed us with their charitable mission. Shortly after, a sponsor came up to us and offered us a free sandwich. He also gave us cards for free lunches anytime at Chicken Kitchen. The 3+ mile run on the Rice Trail was scenic and enjoyable. When we got back, we were treated to more free stuff, a buffet with pasta and salad. 10 runs later, we've enjoyed the free beer and are still motivated by the extra rewards, the fitness benefits for ourselves and the pet bulldog, and even more so, by being a part of great charitable club. read more

It looks like the group has been growing each week I've been there. Dave organizes a pretty easy weekly run with lots of great incentives: no cost for joining; free Red Bull, salad and pasta, and beer; and a fun way to meet new peeps and get in a good run. Brian O'Neill's has also been a great host to us. Good job Dave and Brian O'Neill's!! Since the group has gotten bigger and the Rice path is a bit narrow, we've split the group up and made two separate routes. This has made our starts less crowded and hectic. I also think that the prospect of other people "competing" for free beer does make people run faster than they normally do. I discovered this event through Yelp, which has been super helpful since my recent move to Houston, so I decided to give it a try. I attempt to run daily although I don't go very fast/far (usually just about 4-5 miles). This club is super laid back, everyone goes at their own pace so no pressure to race anyone (unless you feel like it lol) and the route is easy for any newbie to figure out. The people are very friendly too. You can't miss the place because there are runners out front and a sign up sheet. Make sure you sign in every time because they have perks depending on how many runs you attend. I can't remember all of them, but I do know that after your first 10 runs you get the t-shirt which is pretty neat. The food was nothing to write home about, but it was FREE!! And the happy hour drink specials are pretty good. The only downside to this event is the parking, or lack thereof. I had to park a few streets away to avoid paying $10 for a garage or the possibilty of being towed. Parking aside, this was a great time and I am determined to earn my t-shirt! read more

Even though I haven't actually met many people from the running club, I love the idea of the running club and find it great as motivation for running regularly! I've gotten the free shirt (after 10 runs) and a few other free goodies-- what's not to like?! For those of you who have never been, you simply show up on Tuesday night in front of Gorgeous Gael (formerly Brian O'Neill) where they have a table set up, check-in to get your run counted, and then run the Rice Loop (~3 mile loop). There's usually cups and water at check-in. I think they do a group run, but I usually just go with a friend or two! I'd also mention that it can be pretty dark on parts of the trail at night in the winter, so I prefer going once the sun starts to set later, since I typically run at 6pm. read more

I started doing this with some friends to train for an event and I couldn't be happier with this club. Everyone is friendly and welcoming! All types show up to run: family members with strollers and dogs, hardcore runners, frat boys with questionable health, women dressed in head to toe Prada that sweat Burberry, it's amazing and fun! Of course there are some drawbacks: the trail isn't as wide as Memorial (I like to think of it as cozy), parking in most situations is illegal (but thinking about it, driving to a bar to run does seem pretty counter productive, right?!). Living less than a mile from Brian O'Neills, I've been there for breakfast, happy hour and dinner (no, not all on the same day.... but now that I think about it... not a bad idea...). This is how I came to hear of the Brian O'Neill's Running Club. A do-able 5K, earn free stuff, and pretty nice scenery. I'm not sure why we didn't join earlier. So this past Tuesday, we took our first loop. Signed up with the assistance of the friendly volunteers and started on our way. In general, the walk was pretty and the trees provided a bit of shade from the blistering sun. Since you're pretty much walking around a parking lot, the views are limited, though, I guess if I was running I'd do less looking around and more making sure I didn't fall... Hey, I'll get there. I figure by the time I earn a shirt that says "running club" (10 runs), I better ACTUALLY be running. We were a little late for the free dinner since we didn't start the walk until close to 6:45, but hopefully next time we'll be able to indulge... and only 99 more runs until I get that $100 bar tab..... read more

I really love the BON running club! I know it isn't anything super special, but I just love running and finding other people who love it as well. The view is gorgeous because it is around Rice! I really like the fact that the entire trail is 5K so you can time yourself and have a legitimate race length to go by. Oh I love running running running! I have finally found a place where a lot of runners of all different levels and ages come to run. Brian O' Niels is great to meeting other fellow runners. You run a 5k around Rice University, and you can show up between 6:00PM and 7:30PM to run. If you get there early, and you are one of the first people to finish there is free pasta and salad for the runners after the run. A big group of people go running at 6:30PM, and this is the time when I like to go running because I can run with some of the fast people. :) It is easy to make friends, and I made some friends after the first run who offered me a beer for free. Talk about friendly people! They have good service for all the runners after the run. There is an outdoor seating area for all the runners with a water mist to keep the runners cool. You get a free shirt after I think 10 runs, and I think you get a discount to Lululemon after 20 runs. You get something else at 30 runs. After reading about this club on Yelp and hearing about it from friends, I've never been to this running club until recently. The club runs in groups at 6:00pm and another at 6:30pm. But of course, you don't need to run in the group if you don't want to. And it is FREE. I can't comment on running in the group, but the trail is one of the nicest ones I have seen. Although...I haven't been to many due to the simple fact that I am extremely lazy. The energy of the people that are running helps you in the long journey back to the bar. Afterwards, you could reward yourself to the pasta/salad buffet (it's meh, but you can't complain). My main reason for not giving it a complete 5-stars is that it can be extremely difficult to meet new people. It is not at all the running clubs fault or the host. Think about it, not many people who actually run can talk at the same time due to the concentration they have, or if you can't keep up with the physical endurance you would be left behind (I assume). I am sure a few folk have met each other there and started running together, but majority of what I see is friends/couples going out for a nice walk/run. But you probably would have a better chance of meeting people since I am shy. So...say hello to me. read more

What's not to love about a free running group?? The fact that this group runs around the Rice U trail makes me love BON even more! The perks: free food before the run, and after your 10th check-in you get a FREE BON DRI-FIT RUNNING SHIRT! Okay, so I admit, that was the main reason why I started running in the afternoons on Tuesdays (yes, for the free shirt). I'm on my 9th, going on 10th run and let me tell you... I'm excited!!!! Also, the next goal for me on this run is their BON green jacket. Boys and girls, that means signing in for 75 run!! There are other perks between your BON shirt and the jacket but I do not remember what they are. Really quick, there's plenty of water for you to hydrate. During the peak times, there are a group of girls who passes out water during the middle of your run and would also offer to throw water on you :) Parking can be an issue if you show up later. If you don't like holding your keys while running, the friendly folks who put the running group together does have a box to keep your keys for you (but don't be dead last because they will pack up... However, the group does hang around for beers at BON and someone will have your keys). Overall, I really enjoy this running group (so much I gave it 5 stars!) they also have a training group for those of you who are doing the half or full marathon in Houston. read more
