I hadn't been there in over 4 years because of my last experience with the previous owner and his stupid rules. None of that! Spent a couple evenings at bold this week while in GR on business. Since my last visit a year ago, the selection in the humidor has grown with lots more choices. Their sticks are a tad higher than some other shops I frequent, but I chalk that up to the quality of their lounge and the level of service they provide. My first evening, I joined a group of locals. They were amenable to my joining in sitting with them. Lot's of friendly conversation. Along with my cigar, I enjoyed an Americano. Our server kept ashtrays cleaned up and water glasses full. Owner Kate stopped by as well to check in with the group. My second evening, I sat with another patron whom I had met on my visit last year. Enjoyed another stick along with an espresso. Again staff was attentive. While I did not enjoy a cocktail on my visits, Bold has a well stocked bar for those who wish to pair one with a cigar or two. Bold is a short walk from the Amway or JW Marriott in downtown Grand Rapids. There is lots of dining choices in the immediate area as well. I'll be back on my next visit. read more

I came in out of town and was greeted by a very knowledgeable and kind worker who took my drink and cigar order. The ambiance in here is very relaxing and chill, it's the perfect cigar and bourbon lounge. The seating is really good, the humidor is awesome and they have a really good selection of fine cigars. i have been to quite a few cigar lounges in the United States and this one is in my top 3. Was advised that dress is typically business casual yet other patrons were dressed as equally casual as my party. Let alone the artist of the evening was wearing a casual t-shirt that said big daddy. Scrutinized ID check to purchase cigars for on premise consumption with drinks. Am not complaining about them complying with laws but other overall treatment of additional business was just off putting. Well, unfortunately, I have to agree with what everybody said as far as the owner isn't exactly the friendly, social kind. But I don't go to places like this for the owner. I go for the drinks and I go for cigars. So the drinks were very good. His wife was basically the server and she is an absolute sweetheart. Reason I give it a 3 Is the cigar choices are pretty limited. You would think and a higher scale cigar lounge like this that they would offer some really top-of-the-line stuff. A ton of rocky Patel which are OK but I don't consider them a top line like a Davidoff or a Fuente. If I am ever back in grand Rapids, I may stop in again. read more

I had a similar experience to many on here. The goofy velvet rope and immediate shake down for a credit card on file before seeing anything is a big turn off. This is GR not Miami. Sadly the pricing doesn't match the experience. It felt very pushy and overpriced. I have no desire to return until things change for the better. I used to write a lot of yelp reviews, haven't in a long time, this experience has prompted me to pick up the yelp "pen" again and leave some comments about this whole experience. A few weeks ago my wife and I traveled to GR for a wedding and afterwards decided to head to Bold with 3 of our friends for a drink and cigar; wife and I have been to lots of cigar bars/lounges and are always anxious to try them out when we travel. We arrived at bold around 11pm on a friday and I had checked the closing time prior, midnight, I figured this gave us an hour to smoke a cigar (about the correct time for a full smoke) and have a drink or two. We were "greeted" by the red velvet rope which seemed a little pretentious (I've read the other reviews now, no bother explaining why they do this), I did feel a little shaken down as others have mentioned even though we were in suits and dresses. The owner (Al) came to the rope to query us and I asked to verify what time they closed, his answer? "We close whenever we feel like it", kind of a laughable and he presented a fake gangster-ish personality, but whatever. We were ushered over to present credits cards to start a tab immediately before we were even seated or had seen a drink menu or looked in the humidor, it all seemed really strange but we played along. We were told to have seats and someone would be around to escort us to the humidor (seemed a little hand-holdy to me as I'm very familiar with how to select a cigar, but ok). Took quite a long time but our drink orders were finally taken and after reminding the server that my friend and I need to visit the humidor, she finally took us there. This was all eating into our time there of course, but Al said they "close whenever they want", so we should be good to go, right? The employee who helped us in the humidor was really the only positive experience here, he seemed genuinely pleasant and helpful, knowledgeable about cigars and customer service, too bad he isn't the owner, things would probably be different! As a reference, he was an older gentleman, a little on the heavier side with round glasses, very nice guy! As a side note, I thought the selection of cigars was very adequate, of course lots of Rocky Patel (to be expected here) and a decent selection of others as well, something for everyone. One star in the review for the gentleman who helped us here and the other star for the humidor by the way, the rest of weird experience was really zero stars. We were finally on our way, having drinks and smoking our cigars. DJ was playing music and it seemed like everyone was having a good time. Al came around at about 1145 and asked how much longer we were staying, so in line with his "we close whenever we want to" statement, I told him about 30 more minutes to finish my cigar and to finish our drinks then we'd be leaving, so around 1215 ish is what I was thinking, he walked away. The place still had quite a few people sitting around and at straight up midnight he announced, "everyone pack up your stuff, it's time to leave", no kidding, that was it. It was the weirdest thing the way it was done, like you're trying to be this high end lounge but the follow through, especially from a customer service perspective is a total fail. We scrambled to cash out as it started feeling really odd as everyone was heading for the door so abruptly, the sticker shock came when the bill arrived but we felt so rushed that I didn't even scrutinize what we were charged (my fault on that one). We had a total of 3 drinks and 1 cigar (my other friend paid for his own), my bill was $145!!!!! I'm not kidding, one hundred and forty five dollars, just to spell that out, not a typo, 3 drinks and a $14 dollar cigar, not a spendy smoke. I honestly have no idea why it was that expensive and like I said, it's my own fault for not pausing to question it at the time, we were just wanting to get out of there. Overall just a really weird experience as others have stated, they definitely won't be getting any more of my money though. I always try and support veteran owned businesses (as I'm a veteran as well) and really wrestled with even writing this review, but even a week later the whole experience still bothered me. My hope I guess is that this is a warning to others considering going here, just understand what you're walking into! This was our friends' first experience with a cigar bar and it was unfortunately not a a positive one, explained to them that this was an anomaly. A last note to the owner / owner's wife - I've noticed that you've written lengthy replies to some of these reviews defending your processes and methods, maybe spend as much time reflecting on these customer experiences and try changing what you do so people want to return to your business, people are taking the time to give you the gift of honest feedback so take it as such. read more

Luckily, we found Bold who maintains a refined cigar lounge atmosphere, not the usual back room smoking lounge. The prices at Bold are not cheap but not exorbitant either. Bottom line is this place honestly sucked. They had every Rocky Patel cigar, which is like saying they have every Budweiser. No one cares about Rocky. First place I've ever been to that had ropes up. After smelling a cigar inside of the humidor, I was told that I had to purchase it because the owner would be fined $5000 for restocking because of Covid. Awful. The place is trying to fake class, not at all as "upscale" as they aspire to be. Forced to pay a $50 fee for one person in our party wearing a designer tee shirt (with no collar), meanwhile someone else wearing a collared shirt with "HARLEY DAVIDSON" embroidered across the back was apparently perfectly fine. Can't fake class. Beyond the shakedown at the front door, cocktails are the most over priced in town, cigar pricing followed suit. There is a fundamental misunderstanding of what "upscale" means, BOLD chooses to ask for "upscale" pricing and delivery absolutely average products. Awkward set up! Had a cigar of my own I was looking forward to trying, but needed to stock up too. Hostess tells me there is a cutting fee. Ok, no problem. Common in bigger city lounges. In my experience, it's also waived if you are purchasing more cigars which I was. Hostess says sorry, you have to buy and smoke the stick you buy here or I charge you $20. On principle, I'm out. This is one of my favorite places to hang out with friends. The atmosphere is very relaxed and inviting even with the dress code. Yes the drinks are expensive but El Jefe is one of the best cocktails I have drank. If you haven't been there you may find entry different. The experience starts at the door with a guided selection from their excellent humidor. I always appreciate the insights and they have helped me experience new things. It then moves through lighting to a comfortable place to sit and chat. Brandon is a wizard at the bar and he will definitely see to your needs and will also match your drink to your stick. I personally go early so I haven't had to deal with the band fee. I am getting older and don't care for noisy environments so I am always gone when they start. I can see where this could be annoying but it hasn't affected my experience. Chatting with Al, the owner, is always interesting and enjoyable. All in all I love this experience. One of my favorite places in GR! Al, Kate and the rest of the staff do an excellent job at creating an inviting and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere! I think that it's great that there is a dress code. It contributes to the environment they work hard to create. I spent almost $150 on drinks and cigars for my friends because I was not served. I was too loud the owner said. We were one of only two groups in there watching the Michigan game and I guess cheering too loud? We were asked to be quiet several times and finally asked to leave. Which we did in shock. Bold Cigar Lounge is a laid back and relaxed atmosphere. There is expressed expectations of what to wear and what to do, which was very nice to have. Service is amazing, you are greeted at the door - a tab is started - the owner (Al) met us and shows you around and is very knowledgeable.
