I had no idea that it existed...until I won a gift certificate from the Spoken Boutique at the Saratoga Wine and Food Festival this past September. Knowing that I am the least fashionable person on the planet, I brought my mom here over Thanksgiving weekend to use the gift certificate. Even though I'm a walking fashion faux-pas, I actually liked quite a lot of the items that they carry. My mother really enjoyed her shopping experience here and purchased several items. A welcome addition to the Schenectady small business retail scene, it's very on-brand, and I'm here for it. I was able to get quite a few Schenectady-centric Christmas gifts here, and since I always try to support local makers and businesses first, this shop made it super easy - lots of one-stop-shopping potential. My haul included: - two ornaments for the Christmas trees of my Schenectady born-and-raised sisters who no longer live in the 518 - a cute little crocheted elf for my 5-month old niece made my a local granny - a rather stunning wooden bowl, handmade by a local engineer/former colleague of the owner who parkates in woodworking as a hobby - Electric City themed gifts for my boss, who's a Schenectady guy at heart, including a wooden/metal hybrid bottle opener with "ELECTRIC CITY" boldy branded on the front, a pint glass with a cool 70s-esque, retro font ("ELECTRIC CITY"), matching sticker (for the laptop!), and a coaster, but not just any old boring coaster. This one had an illustrated scene printed on glossy enamel depicting a Schenectady police officer playing basketball with a child. Not only did this fit my theme, but the I knew the coaster I chose (there were several different ones) would be significant because his father is a retired Schenectady cop. I guess the pictures on the coasters were part of a public art project, where Schenectady-themed scenes were drawn and then selected to appear on merchandise for the Greenmarket and other items, like these coasters sold here. This is a rough Cliffs Notes version of the project, but it was cool learning about it, knowing it was part of something bigger and community focused. It's the little touches like that which make gift giving feel so special, and I know I wouldn't have found any of those beautiful, thoughtful, local gifts without a shop like Schenectady Trading Co. It would have been even better if there was a small card with a write up about the art project, so I could have gifted the coaster with a bit more "purpose." I like it when I can include a write up about the artist or project or whatever interesting element might need further explaining to make the gift even more interesting. Aside from my local finds, there's plenty of other merchandise, and items that stuck out were a selection of Tough Traveler bags (hometown favorite!), "Electric City" and "Schenectady, Light Up the World!" apparel, a cool assortment of Schenectady inspired vinyl stickers, chocolates from Schenectady-based chocolate shop, Uncle Sam's, and quite a few other odds and ends. I'm thankful that shops like this exist, backed by business owners who have an appreciation for the city and realize there's a need for some Electric City gift giving magic. Wishing them lots of luck, and excited to see what type of programming the owner has in mind down the road (she hinted on wanting this to be more than a retail shop, with poetry nights and books clubs and other outlets for mental stimulation - bring it on!)

Every time I visit, there's something there that I need to take home with me. And thankfully, they hold furniture for two weeks after you purchase it, which is incredible. The prices are always fair and the staff is incredibly welcoming and helpful. I highly recommend Yellow Lab for a unique and fun shopping experience!

You do have to do some digging to find the good stuff in some sections but honestly it's worth it! They block out or remove the brand name on their tags but sometimes you can tell what it was and see just how much of a bargain you have on your hands! I got a pair of the coziest pants ever for $4 and I'm still over the moon about it! My mom is already asking when we will go back. I am extremely disappointed with my experience consigning items with this business…read more I provided numerous items for consignment over approximately a two-year period, all of which were clearly tagged with my assigned consignor number. In addition to the items initially documented, I have video showing additional merchandise being dropped off and accepted by the business under my consignor number. Over those two years, I was only paid $50 each for four items. When I asked for payment, I was given no clear accounting or explanation of exactly what had sold, when it sold, or what I was being paid for. This became especially concerning once I realized how much merchandise I had consigned compared with what had been returned or accounted for. I gave the owner Liza approximately one month's notice that I would be picking up all of my unsold merchandise on August 22 and expected to receive payment for anything that had sold. When I arrived, I was only given back one wedding dress and my daughter's sweater. Numerous other items I had consigned were not returned to me, and I have still not received the full 40% payment owed to me for merchandise that was sold. Even more concerning, there was another person's wedding dress at the store marked with my consignor number, despite the fact that it did not belong to me. That made me seriously question how merchandise and consignor accounts were being tracked. I have repeatedly reached out to Liza (who doesn't respond) asking for either the return of my merchandise, payment for the items that were sold, or an accurate accounting of what happened to my items. I have given ample opportunity for this to be resolved. She has given nothing but far fetched excuses why she couldn't speak to me or be on location for my appointment to pick up my goods and since ignored. As a consignor, you trust a business with your personal property and expect accurate records, proper tracking of your merchandise, and payment according to the agreed-upon terms. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. I have documentation, correspondence, and video showing merchandise that was accepted under my consignor number. I simply want the money owed to me for anything that was sold and an explanation for the merchandise that was neither returned nor properly accounted for. Based on my experience, I would not trust this business with valuable or designer merchandise. Sell it yourself on an app like Vinted, where you maintain control and have a record of every sale. It's disheartening that a business built on handling other people's property operates this way.
