On the recommendation of another psychologist I know, I hired Dr. Bohannon to treat my 20 year old son a few months after he was released from rehab. I agreed to be reponsible for his psychology bills. I realize in retrospect that I should have chosen a therapist who specialized in treating addicts as they pose special challenges for the therapist. I found myself stuck with bills for sessions my son "missed and failed to cancel" - fair enough - but I would have appreciated a call from Dr. Bohannon letting me know after the first missed session so I could have cancelled the future appointments and saved myself hundreds of dollars.
Bear in mind that therapists are legally bound to keep in confidence what they learn from their patients (with some exception). If your child has a history of drug use and relapses while under a therapist's care, as mine did, the therapist will, most likely, not let you know. I would recommend you find a therapist who insists that the child sign a form allowing the therapist to disclose information regarding drug use to you, the parent, and that you do frequent drug tests on your child. read more
