I called them up and asked if they had time for a 'walk in', and the guy told me to come straight down. I popped in and showed him my design, and when I asked when he could so it, he said "Now." Half an hour later I left with a new work of art, and that was that. Having been in the game for a long time now, the owner knows his stuff, and the young guy who works alongside him seems to be quite popular too. Although I paid a lot more than usual, I put it down to the fact that since my last tattoo, this form of expression has become 'the new black' with everyone getting ink done these days.

There are a handful of studios in Melbourne that slot into the upper echelon of work, apparently Third Eye is in the ball park of Tattoo Magic and Chapel Tattoo. They encourage walk ins at Third Eye and this, these days, is a rarity. Their rates are highish and they do charge for drawing of custom work, but just go in and check out the quality and you'll see why it's a bit pricey. They have great gender balance here so there's none of that macho attitude you'll get at the biker shops. Plus, girls tend to have a bit of a lighter touch with the needle, so it doesn't hurt so bad. The shop is immaculate and the folk are super friendly. It's the kind of place you really want if you're a newbie to the world of tatt's. It's the kind of place you'd take your grandma.

Like most tattooists, first impressions of the staff can seem quite rough, however that's the business. Ummm, well I'm on holidays and it just so happened to be from one of the tattoo artists on my 'to visit' list so I snapped that bad boy up. Walking into Good Luck Tattoo you are hit with a visual overload. Every inch of wall is taken up with framed flash sheets from residence artists or guest artists who have clearly enjoyed their time at the shop. Like all well presented and well stocked (with highly skilled artists) shops there is a steady flow of clients coming in and out of the door, and it seems like the majority of the appointments actually occur ON TIME! Woah! To assist with drowning out the bzzzz bzzz bzzz of that tattoo gun, there is a huge variety of tunes and a lot of shop banter - it's clear that these guys enjoy working with each other. The average hourly rate is $150 p/hr which is totally reasonable for such high quality work. Would defo recommendo!

I thought having sleeves of tattoos was a prerequisite for admittance. But the next moment I saw leopard spots being hand painted into a bleached buzzcut. I knew Razor Dolls wasn't full of barbers, but true artists. As soon you get past the skate decks on the walls and the books on tattoos, Razor Dolls has the friendly demeanor of your local corner barber shop. You just want to hang out with them after hours, sipping beers and discussing the latest dramas/events in their lives. In fact, I'm pretty sure they'll offer you a beer to sip while you're getting trimmed! I've had Ryan and Haley cut my hair, and every time they keep one-upping themselves for the best haircut ever. They take their time making sure everything is perfect, so make sure to plan ahead. For a men's cut & wash, it took me between around 60 minutes, and up to 90 minutes. You won't want to leave, but I've warned ya! The prices are definitely higher (for a men's cut) than any other salon I've been to, but worth it for the BEST haircut of your life. My girlfriend couldn't get over how sexy I looked.

She was really friendly, did a great job with my colour (I'm a natural brunette currently sporting a copper red that has proven hard to match in the past), and perfected the blow dry I wanted (I was pretty specific with how I wanted it styled for a change). For a regrowth tint, plus refresh of my entire long hair (below shoulder blades) & a blow dry, came to $95 and I was in there for just under 3 hours. For a city location a couple of doors from home, I'm happy and would go back. I'm not sure how creative they'd be, so if I wanted something different I'd probably pay the $$ for a regular salon, and can't comment on cutting! Fun Fact - they're a full beauty and hair training salon, so have nails, massage etc too
