Or if that's hot with you, even. Dartmouth down in Southern Devon has its own steam railway line, privately owned, and it's a great one. It begins in a lovely part of the old city with a station that we have used on a number of occasions and will probably continue to do so in future. I like it and I think it's well-designed and perfectly located for tourists, and there's a little parking nearby too if you drive like we did. It's a grand little old steam train, and is one of the prettiest in the country, not only Devon, and most stations in most towns along this little route are a little way out of the beautiful centres, and utterly gorgeous!

A weird feeling to walk across when the tide is out and then knowing you have to keep an eye on the time so that you are not stranded there!! The boatmen are very helpful if you have a mobility problem or need help with buggies. Catch this ferry from Salcombe (go down the steep steps by the Ferry Boat Inn) and wait to be taken to the East Portlemouth side to go to some really beautiful beaches where you can people and boat watch all day! (or to gain access to the stunning coastal path on the other side of the estuary.) There are queues when it starts to rain because everyone rushes to get back.

Reaching the house once leaving the ferry is a bit of a trek uphill so make sure you have comfortable walking shoes on. Entry price is around £9 each but they do pretty much guilt you into making a 10% donation to Gift Aid (which is added to the entry price without asking and most people are too embarrassed to ask for this to be removed). The staff also try to sell you National Trust membership which is rather annoying as this really slows down the queue to get in. Once inside you can get some food in the café/restaurant although the prices are quite steep and the queues and service are horrendously slow. You can explore the grounds at your leisure and includes lovely views which you can imagine enthralled Agatha Christie as a child. Entering Greenway House is a lovely experience with the tour guides telling you that you enter as a visitor through the front door and leave via the back door as a friend of the family. Each room in the house can be explored at your own pace. There are items from Agatha Christie's childhood and later life in every room from dolls to books to diaries to items she collected and her piano and music that she wrote. You are not allowed to take photos inside the house. All in all a visit to the house shouldn't take longer than 2-3 hours maximum. A worthwhile experience for fans of Agatha Christie.
