My boyfriend and I went on a Thursday night to the Rest and it was super cool! Security was super nice and when we walked in, the vibe in Bodega was loud and very dancy. We walked through a crowd and went to a hostess in the back, walked downstairs, and entered The Rest, which had a VERY different vibe. I really liked their drink menu options and while I can't remember the name of the kind bartender who helped us, she gave us some great recommendations. I got the Savvy-C and liked it a lot! My boyfriend got some kind of old fashioned-esque drink and also liked it. Kitchen was unfortunately closed so we didn't eat anything. The ambiance was great. They had so many vinyls and were playing a variety of different music. The interior felt like a mix of rustic and Victorian vibes. Super cool. Bodega's basement feels like the kind of place you hope someone lets you in on--industrial steel softened by antiques, deep leather banquettes, and walls lined with vinyl that spins all evening. The atmosphere invites you to linger, so if you're on a schedule, let them know when you're seated. The harissa-rubbed half chicken was the surprise of the night. It had the crisp, deeply seasoned skin you'd expect, but it was the meat that lingered in my memory: impossibly juicy, flavorful, and cooked with the kind of care that reminds you what chicken used to taste like. I'm really sad to leave this review, and want management to know I think there's redemption to be found yet. We went to The Rest, the basement speakeasy below Bodega (no separate Yelp page) for Valentine's. We went the day after to avoid the Valentine's menu, as we wanted the full regular menu. The bartender in Bodega refused to acknowledge us (ID checks are now SUPER mandatory in Utah as of 2026) so we waited by the door for a good 3 minutes before giving up. I saw a stairway a ways back and just walked myself down it. There was a bathroom and an unmarked door at the bottom. Upon opening the unmarked door, it clearly led into the restaurant, but we couldn't see a hostess station anywhere. We decided to wait by the record station to be helped. We were eventually seated for our reservation, where the very apologetic server let us know immediately that the kitchen was running behind and it would be best to get food in ASAP. We put in drink and food orders immediately. About 10 minutes later our server returned to let us know that they didn't actually have the recipe for the menu drink my husband ordered, and asked if he could pick something else. He asked if they could make an Irish Coffee, to which they obliged. They brought our drinks. Mine was good! Their drink menu does look very imaginative. My husband's Irish coffee lacked a cream component, such as Bailey's or whipped cream, which I would consider to be standard in an Irish coffee, thought that *can* just mean coffee and Jameson, but I digress. Our food was a universal disappointment, I'm really sorry to say. I hope to update this review with pictures from his phone soon. We ordered the gochujang salmon bites, which were very small, pretty dry, and on a bed or plain cooked white rice. I'd appreciate some butter and garlic to jazz up the rice, and much larger bites of salmon. I had the meatloaf, which was also dry. The potato side dish was by far the best thing we ate. Lastly my husband ordered the tempura mushroom. It had been left far too long in the fryer. If you know tempura, the batter should be golden, light, almost fluffy in texture. The batter was coffee colored, thick, and hard. The server was apologetic for all of it. In my opinion, it seems like there has been an ownership change recently, what with the interior renovation. There has been trouble hiring or retaining staff. I think the restaurant should close temporarily to hire and properly train enough kitchen staff to keep up with demand, so as for them to not be so overwhelmed, and accidentally let food overcook. As a former line cook myself, this is tough work, and it's nearly impossible when understaffed. I don't blame the staff at all, as they were visibly stressed and stretched thin. My recommendation is to hold off until they iron out the kinks. read more

THE WORST restaurant we have ever been to. We were here back in January to celebrate a recent engagement with 8 of our friends. They were great at accommodating our large party and that's about it. It took us 30 minutes to get our food and close to 40 just to receive our first round of drinks. After waiting 40 minutes for our drinks we realized all of them were completely wrong, which left us waiting even longer. Our server honestly seemed like she couldn't care less. We were willing to spend our money here and excited to see what it was all about. However, will not be returning after our terrible experience. A definite MUST to check out if you're in SLC! I've been to my fair share of speakeasies and The Rest is certainly a gem with very unique vibes. It's downstairs from the main restaurant Bodega in the basement with taxidermy on the walls, funky music and a very immaculately stocked bar where you can watch your highly aesthetic drink prepared inches away from you. There are usually 2-3 bartenders who work incredibly fast - it's fun watching them tag team your order for peak efficiency. We had already eaten a suboptimally filling dinner elsewhere so were just looking for light bites and dessert/drinks to supplement, so my bf and I split the Mafaldine. Thinking that the highlight was their cocktails, I was absolutely blown away by the quality of the food. The Mafaldine is one of my favorite pasta dishes to date, prepared in a creamy and incredibly addictive miso sherry coconut sauce with chili crisps that was absolutely to die for~ After the first few bites, I instantly regretted not having dinner here and had to fight the urge to go for a full second meal. Other intriguing highlights from the menu that I would try if I came back are the swordfish skewers and beer can chicken (a whole thing that must be ordered in advance prior to showing up). The Fruit Punch dessert was almost too pretty to eat and very intricately arranged with a multitude of contrasting textures- a passion fruit-coconut panna cotta base topped with kiwi bits, persimmon preserve and pineapple brulee ice cream - totally up my alley as a fruity dessert girlie and just as divine as it sounds!! Don't get me wrong, the cocktails are delicious and their fall rotation is full of yummy cinnamon-fruity options -- the Gold Dust Woman is super yummy if you're a rum girlie like me, but seriously don't sleep on the food here!! Highly recommend Bodega & the Rest for an intimate date night or to take anyone you wanna impress. The atmosphere was beautiful--quiet, intimate, and truly upscale. It created a great setting for a special dinner. The filet mignon and scallops were excellent, and the drinks were top tier. The bartenders were efficient, attentive, and provided noticeably better service than what we experienced at the table. Unfortunately, the table service did not match the standard expected at this price point and the risotto left much to be desired. The restaurant was very slow, yet it took about 40-45 minutes to receive our appetizers. The manager did apologize and offered a complimentary appetizer for a future visit, which I appreciated, but nothing was done during the meal itself to make up for the delay. For a $250 experience, I expected more attentive and proactive service. The service recovery felt minimal, and overall the table service felt cheap relative to the upscale pricing and atmosphere. While the food and drinks were strong, the service experience ultimately did not reflect the level this restaurant presents itself at, and I don't plan on returning. read more

I like to visit this tight and small bar to start off my night. Beware.. it is cheap tequila and beer for a budget friendly experience but there are more quality options. They recently added a tomato beer drink called Bodega-da. Which I do recommend! FYI--In order to have access to the speakeasy, you must get on the list. Stopped by ~6pm on a Friday night and had no issues snagging a bar slot at The Rest. Got to chatting with the host who was super friendly and has lived in my hometown of Queens before! I loved the ambiance of an unassuming local bar feel up top coupled with a hidden underground woodsy cozy bar. Service was quick, drinks are tasty. Duck ravioli was plate licking good. There are lots of bitters to choose from, which we were surprised and a bit overwhelmed by. Phenomenal experience. From the aesthetic of the rest to our amazing waitress and bartender.. it's a visit I won't forget. The ambiance of the rest is a stark contrast to the bodega upstairs. Honestly, a welcome contrast. The Rest is warm, welcoming, and has this vintage dark and moody romanticism about it. The bartender expertly mastered my Bourbon Bramble (cocktail) that most don't know or can't make properly. Our waitress.. I can't say enough good things about her... I'm sad I didn't get her name. The Rest was an amazing, unexpected fine for us! We were waiting for table a different restaurant nearby and decided to get cocktails at The Rest. Fortunately, there were seats available at the bar, no reservation needed (feels like it would be best to have reservations if you want a table). The cocktail menu featured interesting drinks with variety in liquor used. They also had a specific section for mocktails called liebations. I had a cocktail and a mocktail, both were excellent! We only had an appetizer (bread & butter), but the full menu looked delicious. I would definitely recommend and look forward going back for a full meal! read more

We had the ceviche, shishito peppers, and the steak, and dessert- and all of it was absolutely delicious. The drinks were creative too. Wow, while it looks very small from the outside, there is a secret hidden downstairs below ground that allows for a lot more seating. Even on a Thursday night in February, it was packed. They checked her ID at the door, and you're able to either order drinks and food in the small or upstairs level, or have a wider selection of options downstairs. They do allow for walk-ins, but it could be up to an hour wait. For 3 of us, it was about a 45 minute wait so we put our name down and went elsewhere in the meantime. While we initially enjoyed our (expensive) dinner Saturday night, my husband and I both got food poisoning a few hours later (most likely from the Fish of the Day served on 03/29) - my husband's was so severe he ended up passing out and breaking his nose, resulting in us spending several hours in the emergency room. I cannot in good faith recommend The Rest, which is very unfortunate as our server Nicole was kind and friendly and the remainder of our meal was pleasant. I hope others avoided whatever undercooking or bad bacteria was in the fish and did not have to go through this. This is extremely unsettling as this type of food poisoning does not happen out of the blue. I hope they fix this quickly so others don't have to endure what we did. read more

This is regarding "The Rest". Overall: It's fine for a drink and has good vibes, but DO NOT EAT HERE. It's under new management and overall the experience is poor. Cannot recommend. The overall experience took too long due to food taking a long time to come out. Overall, it was over 2.5 hour for a party of 8. - Food on the menu was mostly either unavailable or terrible in terms of seasoning and cookery. Detail: For context, this is a review for a party of 8. I regularly have medium to large groups that I plan dinners for. I've been to the Rest several times for drinks and it's been great, so decided to bring a group for dinner, but sadly it was a poor experience and would certainly never bring a group back to eat. Drinks were fine as usual. The waitress explained that they are under new ownership and they no longer serve the Old Fashioned flight (despite being on the menu). That wasn't the end of the world, we moved on. But things fell apart when it came to the food. They were out of several things on the menu. It was almost like a guessing game in terms of what was actually available (they were even out of their bread and butter, somehow). Our waitress explained, again, that it had to do with the new management. Our group eventually sorted out what we wanted from what they actually had available. After a long wait the food came. Our group had several steaks. Two of them were not to the right temp. We brought it up, and they brought them back and cooked them longer - but it was clear that they re-heated already sliced steak, drying it out - awful experience, especially for ~$50 a dish. Three folks in our party ordered the burger. Every single one was unpalatably salty. We all agreed that we couldn't really eat them. We didn't have a check in throughout the eating experience, but when our waitress did check in with us, we brought up how salty the burgers all were. None of us were able to stomach even a quarter of our burgers. Our amazing waitress checked with her manager who indicated that they would remake it but not offer us any discount and would not remove it from our bill. This was fine (I get it, you can't always comp the meals), but we were ~2.5 hours into this experience. It took so long for food to be delivered. Our waitress said it'd be about 20 mins to get new burgers and we declined because we had already been there too long. So, in all, 3 out of our 8 folks had a fine meal. The manager did not come by our table to talk to us about anything that happened. Overall, the experience was poor. Although our waitress was fantastic, it's clear the new management is not invested in good customer experience. For context, the restaurant was not full, so it's not like they were overwhelmed. It's possible they eventually get their stuff together, but that's no excuse for the overall poor customer service. In the meantime, if you're looking for a cool bar experience with fantastic food and good service, you're better off going to Franklin Ave. for better food and service/management. I won't be returning for any meals, but may consider for a drink. As a side note, if you have allergies, please let them know. There were cashews in a raw fish dish (who would've thought) and it was not labeled on the menu and it was blended in a sauce, so beware. read more

The ambience was nice, dark, cozy, and artsy. FOOD The portions were bigger than I had expected. Mushroom Toast: The bread was really hard to cut, but the flavors were great! Had the right amount of acidic in the dressing to balance the savory mushrooms. (Rating: 4/5) Shrimp and Grits: It had a Thai fusion in it! Grits with a hint of coconut. (Rating: 5/5) Pan Seared Scallops: It was okay. Orange sauce was bland. I've had better scallop dishes. (Rating: 2/5) Hot Thai chicken: The chicken leg was so fat, I thought it was boneless. But there were bones. The chicken was crisped really well and was flavorful. The som tum (papaya salad) and cucumber side dishes that came with this was unremarkable. (Rating 4/5) DRINKS Honest John Old Fashioned Flight: You can pick three types of bitters. We chose cherry, coffee, and something citrus (I forget what it was). I liked the coffee one! You walk into the Bodega, which is its own spot for drinks and light food - and the bartender there will let you in a locked door and direct you down to the speakeasy - where you are met with a different host and a whole food and extensive drink menu.
