They make you feel stupid. When I brought my dog in it was for allergies. He itches himself a lot and has bad ear buildup. The vet basically went on and on about what I was doing wrong, sold me a product that cost me $200 (and I later found out had the same ingredients as a product I can buy at a pet store for $20) and then took my dog in back to clean his ears. I proceeded to sit through 10 minutes of what sounded like a dog being tortured. I had no idea what to do. I wasn't sure if it was my dog I was hearing or what. I was beside myself, tearing up. Finally the vet pops her head back in and tells me not to worry, another dog was getting a bone popped back into place. Um, even so, I don't want to sit and listen to what sounded like an animal being tortured. I promptly switched back to my New Richmond vet. The drive is worth going somewhere that actually cares about animals and doesn't overcharge you on products. Nor have I ever had to listen to animal torture with them.

I think they handled my fur babies perfectly.

I started coming to this vet after I decided to keep a found kitten. Kitten was injured and I had…read moreto get her to an emergency vet right away. She needed stitches to be removed 2 weeks later. Life Care was suggested and I was looking for a new vet, so went to them. Decided to stay with them. Most of the doctors have been great. Most techs have been great. I think it's the ownership and staffing/scheduling; as I've noticed in the year and half or so I've been going, front desk staff changes. I've also not seen one of the techs I remember when I first started going there. They aren't retaining support staff and I can guess why they leave. The appointment/record entry is questionable. Regardless of the reason for the appointment, it has been entered as "wellness exam" 9/10 times. When you go to schedule via the portal- there aren't appropriate choices, or comment sections to add info. When you do think you picked the appropriate choice/wording and later check/look it up - the info has changed to generic "wellness exam". No idea of price until you get there and they suggest how to proceed and have you agree. Except for the very first visit, I'd usually never get out of there without paying at least $150, or in that ball park. I said, AT LEAST. Not "on average", but as in, no less than. Every. Single. Visit. Hundreds of dollars for blood work labs, before anything that requires anesthesia (dental cleaning, etc.) Go in for an issue, suspected injury, illness- whatever- and you drop over a hundred for exam, then more for meds. Then a follow up is scheduled for a week or so out- which again costs you over $100. My most recent visit was the deciding factor for me. They suggested a flea and heartworm preventative for my older cat (at the appointment) and I thought that made sense. I was all ready to get the med, when I asked about it for my other cat at home. The tech said they'd have to see my other cat in office before prescribing it for her too; mind you- that was the kitten, who'd constantly been there (as in, about every month) her first year of life for regular wellness exams and preventatives, etc. Refused to give the med for her without seeing her in office, but didn't explain why what was necessary. BUT wanted to send me home with the med for the cat at the appointment. WHY would I treat one cat with a flea preventative and not the other cat at the same time? What would even be the point? That is what I told the tech, and refused the med. I knew already, and didn't want to accept it... At that point and after all the other money spent there over the period of a year and half and red flags- it was completely clear that this hospital ridiculously over charges. Offers urgent care, but somehow the appointment will be days away- but will still be charged urgent care pricing...One way or another; either by exorbitant pricing for certain services, or by over scheduling/unnecessary exams. I have to go elsewhere.

This clinic is rated by Consumer Checkbook as being #1 in the Southeast Metro area and #9 in the entire Metro area for quality and value--I can see why! My cat has been poked and prodded by several of the friendly, purrrfessional vets and vet techs at this clinic, and he and I like them all (as does my sister, whose cats also reluctantly visit this clinic). They are empathetic, gentle, and wonderful at easing your worry while explaining procedures. Not to mention they are experts at obliterating cats' stank breath! We have sent numerous other friends and family here...which is a 20-30 minute drive away from home town. While there are other veterinary clinics in Red Wing *shout out to The Bluffs for also having taken wonderful care of our family pets over the years*, paws-down we will visit the Hastings clinic first due to large cost savings ...about 2/3 to 1/2 of what you pay for office visits/teeth cleaning/extractions, etc.. elsewhere. From the hand-written messages of condolence after the loss of one of our family pets to the detailed, caring, humorous messages I have received from the vets while waiting for my cat to come out of anesthesia, I can't imagine having a better experience anywhere else. ~The Nosy Norwegian Sniffing out deals and pheromones of scared pets in veterinary clinic lobbies so that you don't have to.

I brought my dog in to have him neutered and it was a horrifying experience. He was dropped off at…read more8:30 am and they called at 1:30 pm stating that everything went well and that I could pick him up after 3 pm. My partner went in at 330 to get him and they carried him out and my partner said that his sack was the size of a soft ball. My partner asked them if that was normal, and they said it might be. The vet said they would keep him a little longer to see if it went down, well it didnt. They ended up having to go back in 2 additional times because he had internal bleeding. They were not able to locate it , so they ended opening his penis by cutting it from the tip to his sack and opened his stomach to check for bleeding. They never found where all the bleeding was coming from and they were not sure why he was swelling like that but said they gave him an extra stich to see if that helped. They called me multiple times throughout the day stating he should be fine but we are going to go back in. In all he went under 3 different times and nothing was found but he had stiches from his sack to his breast bone and along side his whole penis. They called me at 830 pm saying I had 3 choices, 1. pick him up and monitor him myself, 2. leave him there alone in a cage for the night, or 3. Rush him to the ER vet. I opted to take him home because I didnt want him to be alone overnight. The Vet who did the surgeries told me he didnt know what went wrong but asked me to call him if I take him somewhere else so I could tell him what they say the issue is. I feel like he didnt know what he was even doing. He came across very nervous and remorseful, he knew he made a mistake but didnt admit it. We didnt think he would make it through the night. He had to be carried home because he was so out of it and in pain he could not even lift his head. He still had blood sweeping through the stiches. Some weeks went by and he is still alive, but I will no longer use this vet because they butchered my dog and almost killed him. Also side note he had a Scrotal Hematoma and it happens when you mess up the neuter and they didnt need to cut open his penis or go into his stomach for that. This used to be my go to vet but their doctors have changed and not for the better. I also had my other dog put down here 2 years ago he was 14 and had cancer and they lost his ashes, so never going here again.

From my first appointment with Kevin, I felt that him and his team really cared for my cat. Kevin was able to diagnose my cat with a UTI, went through her past medical history and we were able to help my cat feel well again. Since there were no appointments open with Kevin on the day I was available this week, there was a need to see another vet. Katie was absolutely fantastic and took the time to go through any questions or concerns I had! Honestly, I would recommend both Kevin and Katie after these visits The whole team at this place is amazing and caring. I can say to my dog, "we're going to the vet!" and her tail starts wagging because she knows she's about to be loved on, even when she needs to get s-h-o-t-s. Rivertown has not only been an amazing partner in my dog's routine care, but they're so flexible. They've fit us in for emergency visits (I have a dramatic dog, and I'm a worried dog mom), have let us pick up flea, tick, and heartworm meds quickly and without hassle, and even fit us in for a last-minute routine test when I didn't realize we were overdue! Maggie was spayed here by Dr. Garlie and I couldn't find her scar even if I tried. I've never seen a dog heal so quickly and without any issues at all! While the price may be higher than other local competitors, you truly get what you pay for here, which is incredible staff and service and knowledgeable, caring doctors who make each visit an amazing experience for your pet.
