I saw things that I haven't seen at grocery stores in Florida. We purchased a few snacks along the way for our TNF game. The SugarBee apples were difficult to pass up. They were sweet & juicy. A great evening snack. We were also very pleased with the Lindt Dubai Chocolate. These were the real deal (Manufactured in Germany). I'd purchased some recently at a drug store that didn't taste the same as what we had in Switzerland. It was manufactured in New Hampshire, and had more of a hazelnut flavor. The ones at Kroger were truly pistachio. Loved it! You wouldn't think there's a difference, but there is. I was also blown away by the display of tamales. I'd be at this grocery store more often if I lived in Texas. Is it better than Publix? That's difficult to say. They both have their share of pros and cons. All I can say is that I'd be just as happy shopping at Kroger.

The souvenir aisles are overflowing with cheap, tacky beach trinkets clearly designed for tourists who wander in wearing everything from swimsuits to... significantly less. It's part of the atmosphere whether you want it or not. Employees are generally unfriendly and look like they'd rather be anywhere else, which feels about right for a Walmart in peak season. You're not coming here for hospitality; you're coming because you need something, and they probably have it. The parking lot, though -- that's where the real entertainment is. Lines, arrows, stop signs... none of it matters. It's a full‑scale, no‑rules demolition derby of minivans, rental cars, and golf carts, all piloted by people who seem to believe traffic laws are more of a suggestion than a system. Getting from your car to the store and back feels like you've been dropped into some chaotic obstacle course where survival depends on equal parts luck and reflexes.

This is one of those small, no‑nonsense grocery stores that does exactly what you need it to do…read more It's not trying to be fancy, it's not trying to impress anyone, and honestly that's part of the appeal. The place is usually well stocked, especially considering the constant churn of island traffic, and it's an easy stop when you don't feel like dealing with the chaos of the bigger stores. Prices are decent, nothing outrageous, and the grocery selection covers all the basics without pretending to be a full gourmet market. It's practical, straightforward, and reliable -- the kind of place locals lean on because it's there, it works, and it doesn't make a production out of anything. The crowd can be a mix of locals and the occasional beachgoers grabbing last‑minute snacks or supplies, but it never feels as unhinged as the summer free‑for‑all you get at the other island grocery stores. Arlan's stays in its lane, and that lane is "solid neighborhood grocery store that doesn't overthink it."

Recently, I only needed a couple items so I did curbside pickup. Should be easy enough right? Wrong. I hate their parking lot even more now because the curbside spaces are in the MIDDLE of it! Every other nearby one has curbside located on one of the sides of the building. When I finally realised the spaces were in the middle, there was only 1 open one... and soon I saw why as I watched at least 3 cars park and go into the store! Ughhh. Sat there for at least 10 minutes waiting. Oh did I mention you'll encounter some of the most idiotic drivers in Galveston county here too? I almost got into 2 accidents in that dumbazz parking lot on that trip alone. NEVER AGAIN.
