Bob Wentz Park located on Lake Travis was recommended to us by the guard at Hippie Hollow. It has scenic views from beautiful Lake Travis. He told us that Bob Wentz Park was known for sailing, windsurfing, scuba diving, and picnicking. This park is on a relatively lower elevation of Lake Travis, so views are not as spectacular as the higher elevations. Apparently, clear underwater conditions make it idea for scuba diving. However, do not expect the beautiful coral reefs like in Hawaii or Caribbean islands. Bob Wentz has an large selection of picnic tables, benches, and grills for grilling. There is an entrance fee of $5 (which is totally fine) which goes to the "maintenance and improvement" of the park and making it nice. However, it looks bad. Like grass overgrown on "trails" and everywhere walkable. Paper that says swimming highly discouraged because of the bacteria growing atm but when there's no swimming or water activities it's just either sitting under a small picnic pavilion with grass overgrown around it or just looking at the water. This little place is a piece of paradise. I love this little park to just hang out in, and I've camped here a few times. It's to the right of the bigger Windy Point City Park. The staff is always friendly and helpful. If you need a cart to haul your stuff from your car to a place in the park, they've got you covered. If you need an air pump for your inflatable SUP or raft, they have that too. Want to shower off after your time in the water, they have outdoor showers. BBQ grills, picnic tables, fire pits, port-o-potties, trees for shade, stairs into the water? Yep, yep, yep! There's lots of space to spread out and enjoy the view of the water. I love the big, flat rocks at the waters edge to sun on. If you prefer a "beach"-like entrance, go next door to the city managed park. The entrance fee here is $10 during the week per person, $15 on the weekend, and I think $5 more for overnight camping. This place is just a wonderful retreat and so close- why aren't you there now? Take a picnic (no glass), your suit (and sunblock), and a friend. Go check it out. Hope you love it like I do. UPDATE: camped there last weekend. There are about 20 skunks living in the bushes. We only saw four. After reading on the internet about how to deter skunks, we bought a 99¢ bottle of ammonia, put some in cups around our tent, and sprinkled the rest on the ground around us. Really nice wide open spot. Lots of picnic tables and grills with tent covers. Beautiful lake views. We came on a Saturday at noon and it was not crowded. It is dog friendly. The entry fee is $5 per adult and $3 per senior age 62+. There's a few areas to park. Overall great time! read more

This review is for The Point beach at Bob Wentz. Some good, some bad. The pros - sandy beach and shallows which is ideal for small kids and feeling safe wading out a little with them. The cons? No shade. At least one umbrella is essential if you don't want to fry or your kids get heat stroke. Additionally, if you have babies or small kids, you're going to want a wagon to get to and from the "beach" from the car park. It's a bit of a trek. Restrooms seem to be out of order this summer. Absolutely beautiful park. We went around noon on a New Years day, and we were greeted by a park attendant who informed us the park was free of charge during the pandemic. Very few people were there, other than a few scuba divers. Clean restrooms, no littering, ample benches and picnic tables. Perfect for an afternoon stroll on a warmer day. read more

I've gone to Windy Point for two summers in a row and each experience was very different. In 2009 the water levels were really low so a lot of people were upset. I however didn't mind because it created a bit of a beach for us to pull our car out onto and really be able to get to our stuff and enjoy the sand. In 2010 the levels were high which meant we had to park in the parking lot and carry all our stuff down. I still didn't mind because there is a smaller but still clearly a beach area by the edge of the water. It's only $10 a car to get in (used to be $8 but they upped it). There is a no public consumption law out there so if you are going to take alcohol, put it in koozie. They won't say anything if it's covered. They offer you trash bags, take one! There are some covered pavillions and picnic tables, some grills if you want to go with your family. I've seen huge parties, families, dates, groups of friends, to actually wind surf, etc. It's a place with so many different people there. One of my favorite places to get to water easily. No hikes like on the greenbelt, no chlorine like in a pool, it's not freezing like Barton. It's the actual lake and it's so much fun! read more

Came to Windy Point on a Friday afternoon after leaving Hamilton Pool due to an hour wait. It was interesting in that we thought we parked in the right lot, but we were wrong. It's easy to accidentally park in a private lot, where the owner gentleman will charge you $8/person, or, in our case (he mentioned he was feeling nice) $10/car. We had to walk 15+ minutes through rocky cliff sides and big boulders, and maneuver around a fence. So make it easier and be certain you are indeed at Windy Point! We trekked down to the "beach", which was rocky and about 3 feet on width. You want to be wearing shoes... There is enough room to open up a towel or blanket, and walking into the water was pleasantly sandy with minimal rocks. Little fish kept biting me, so I left the water after a disappointing 5 minutes. It's very beautiful and scenic, with the Texas hills and sailboats in the distance. I want to like it more, but I'm used to the nice sandy beaches of Lake Michigan. Bring some beers and a floatie, and this could be a nice little spot. read more

My husband and I have been here a few times, twice w/ our pups who love to get in to the water. $10 admission (cash only) per vehicle, the times that we have been it wasn't too crowded. They have bathrooms, a boat launch, covered picnic areas w/ dog poo bags and trash bins scattered around. It is well maintained, rarely see much trash around the area. You can park in the main lot and walk to the covered picnic tables/boat launch area or you can drive a little further down closer to those areas so you don't have to walk as far, which I recommend. It's fun to float around and hang out in the lake here! Very pretty for sure. There are a lot of rocks in this area getting to the actual water, if the lake is low, wear closed toe sandals for sure. Not sure if young kids would be safe w/ all the rocks getting to the lake, seems like it might be better for older kids and adults. read more

When Austinites talked about going to "the lake," I used to laugh. A Michigan girl by upbringing (you know we know how to to do lakes right!), I had never seen a lake in Texas worth a sneeze. And I still haven't. But as long as you don't go to Wentz Park expecting Lake Superior, you'll have a great time. Admission is $8 per car, but when we went on the last day of summer, there was no one manning the admission booth, so we just drove right on in, along a sandy path and right up to the shoreline. There were six other people within our line of sight, total. A great, peaceful afternoon in the slightly chilled water -- watch the muckiness right near the shoreline and don't let your feet get sucked in! Plenty of room to swim, snack, and float around without being disturbed by a soul (though we were kind of sad for the unsuccessful gliders near us!). The crowds were bigger, and they were taking admission fees, on Labor Day, but it was still relatively peaceful. The covered picnic/barbecue areas gave our smallish group plenty of space to spread out our lunch and cook some burgers. The atmosphere was festive, and there were a good number of passing boats, but not so much that we had to mix with anyone we didn't want to meet. The lake is fun despite being dry, dry, dry right now, and I can't wait to see what it's like when it's actually full of water! read more

The is the most beautiful place in all of Austin. I am a city girl who dreams of the water, and Windy Point is as close as I'm gonna get. Located a little bit past the Oasis near Lakeway, Windy Point is my favorite Austin beach. ( Although there sure aren't that many to choose from :) Its cheap to get in, only a few bucks per car, and has picnic tables, bathrooms, some shade, as well as lots of water and rocks to sun on. Most people have never heard of this place. Go there! ( Well maybe in a few months, considering its kinda freezing outside these days.) Although the sand is pretty rocky, and you really need to wear water shoes to walk around anywhere, the ambiance, beauty and seriously serene environment ( disturbed only by some kid blaring a CD player across the way) is worth the trip down. Bring some food and fire up the grill.Windy point is an all day activity. read more

One of the difficulties with this park is that, due to the fluctuating water level of Lake Travis, it is generally impossible to set up amenities in a large part of the park area. So if you're looking for shade - or a restroom -- keep in mind the only place you'll find either of those is essentially back up at the top. Believe it or not, that used to be the extent of the "point", once upon a time. Currently, the peninsula now stretches far into the lake due to the extended drought, and there are a few coarse sand beaches in what used to be lakebed (and before that, juniper woodland and farmland). Interesting hiking, and a surprising variety of bird and animal life, and it's never crowded on weekdays. As stated by others, it is certainly windy here which goes with the topography. Keep in mind that it's $10/vehicle whether your vehicle is full or you're flying solo. There are a few other parks that will "share fares" with this (Reimers Ranch immediately comes to mind) so it's best to pair this with another pay-to-enter park if you're on your own, for the best value. read more

Near the Oasis and Hippie Hollow on Lake Travis, this really is a beautiful spot. It vaguely resembles a beach in the sense that there's sand, kind of, along a body of water. It gets very crowded on summer weekends. This is, naturally enough, the primary windsurfing spot in Austin. There's no shade near the water, so it makes sense to bring your own. You WILL want water shoes if you're going to this part of Lake Travis -- or at least flipflops that can survive the water. Trying to get in and out of the water is super painful and difficult otherwise. There's very little sand, mostly rock surrounding the water so bring lawn chairs or something tougher than a towel to sit on. This place is RIGHT by the Oasis and HippyHollow. The road heading out there is really windy, so if you get car sick easily you might take precautionary measures! Also, it's best to take a trruck out here as the terrain out to the beach is rough.The place is large enough to get your own quiet time with whomever you desire. They provide grills and canopied areas, but they're where the water levels use to be which is far from where they are now (take a look at my picture that was taken from the grill area). I stepped on a couple of beers cans, so wearing shoes would be wise. The water felt excellent and the sand it a nice touch. read more

There are four County Parks in the basin area of Lake Travis. Windy Point has the most shore line / beach. As the name Windy Point suggests, it can get a bit gusty. It should come as no surprise, that the boat amenities for the park are exclusive to small sail craft. Motorboats are banned from the area. There is rarely a line at the boat ramp since motorboats are excluded, so launching your sailboat is a breeze (pun completely intended). There is plenty of room for swimmers and picnickers and dozens of covered picnic tables. When Lake Travis lowers to about 660' a sandbar emerges and expands the park. You can pretend your the Governor of Florida while playing on the peninsula. read more

Checked this place out after reading some other yelpers reviews and looking at the map. We made it out around 11am on Sunday 8/7/11. The lake is really down right now. About 40ft to be exact. I have never been to this spot so I can not really comment to much on the drought effects but I will say that this has a nice beach area for swimming and hanging out. We did notice several tree stumps in the area and even ran into a few in the water. Just be careful on entry and exit. I go very slow and shuffle my feet so I don't stub a toe or trip. It is $10 a car to get in and there was lots to watch in the area. read more

There's a drought this year, so there is a HUGE beach area created to hang out on. The cove is still a little crowded for windsurfing, but it seems to be a pretty good place for it if you're not a nervous nilly like me! As we were getting ready to leave, a man had car trouble, so we jumped his car (unsuccessfully), then I ran out and back in (after closing time) with gas, and finally left him with a really friendly park ranger to wait for AAA. $10 per car to access the park is the same as the other parks in the area. read more

I do not know about this place. We went on Sunday afternoon on Memorial Day weekend after a ton of rain. So I think some of the negatives are potentially from those two factors, but I was not left with a good impression. $10 per car, no matter how many people are in it. Better have cash or check because they do not take cards. We went to the bathroom to change and it was the grossest womens restroom I had been in a LONG time. Not to get too graphic, but wet/poopy toilet paper all over the wet/poopy floor. The whole bathroom smelled disgusting and there was not a single surface I felt comfortable touching. It was also dark (no lights). Ugh, I cringe still thinking about that bathroom. Due to it being Memorial Day Weekend, people were everywhere! Playing all of their music extremely loudly as if everyone wanted to hear their combating stereos. Also, the lake was VERY high so there was no beach to post up on. We put our stuff on a rocky walking path. If you do go here, bring water shoes! We were literally walking over trees and bushes when in the water because the water was so high. There were park grills and benches in the water too! Pretty hazardous, kind of surprised the park was open... The only good thing was the view, but you could get that elsewhere. I will try this place again on a non-holiday when the water level returns to normal to give it one more shot. read more

I didn't realize that there were 2 different parks with "Windy Point" in their name. This one is the state park and I was not impressed at all- cash only, the attendant wasn't very nice and there's a park ranger out there just looking for an excuse to be a jerk. There's a private run park right next door called Windy Point Park that is the complete opposite- debit cards accepted and more of the old Austin vibe that seems to be disappearing. I know which park I'll be going to from now on. read more

We went to take a look at the view and got a senior discount (which was free). The only thing was that there were SO MANY BEES. You cannot get anywhere without being followed by some bees. As soon as you open the car, they start coming in as well. I still do not recommend coming here, even if you are unbothered by bees. There isn't much to do here and the lake was low read more

It would be a lot nicer here if the shoreline hadn't been clogged with bits of styrofoam. I mean a lot of it. This "beach" needs a good raking. It wasn't safe to let my toddler granddaughter play on it. read more
