A great after dinner walk here! You'll be treated to majestic views of the river, a journey between state lines, and if you're lucky, some wildlife here and there. I always love getting near a big river, packed with symbolism and paradoxes as it is. It looks still, yet it moves. It reflects the surface, but goes deep within. It shapes the landscape millimeter by millimeter. It's wild and unpredictable, but also calm and steady. I saw a speckled baby deer walking nearby, and a few birds as well. There were lots of people out jogging, walking, kids exploring. It's just a nice vibe here, especially on a late summer evening. Bonus points for having a fun troll statue below the bridge. Whether you're local or passing through, this is a great spot to stretch your legs and take in the scenery. Omaha has done a wonderful job bringing life to their riverfront, and this is a nice chapter in that. read more

I'll admit that this was a much better stop than I thought it was going to be. I was really disappointed that the National Park service building that stands next to the bridge was closed because of the government shut down. There was an elderly lady at the door trying to get in who said she really needed to use the restroom and I felt so bad for her. From the parking area you can walk under the bridge and up over and across. We also considered taking our bikes out and biking the bridge, but the bridge itself is just not long enough to merit that. You can also rent a bike to ride if you want just at the foot of the bridge , which is really convenient . We enjoyed our walk. We were able to find the little troll under the bridge, it's a free activity, there is nice scenery, and as silly as it sounds, it was kinda cool to have one foot in Nebraska and one foot in Iowa :) read more

We walked the Bob! Spanning over the Missouri River, we had a way easier time crossing over from Omaha, NE to Council Bluffs, IA than Lewis & Clark did in 1804! The bridge is more than just steel & concrete, but actually has a unique internet personality based on its namesake. If you ask a question on social media, you will get an answer from Bob the Bridge! Bob is named after Bob Kerrey, the former Nebraska governor and senator who was instrumental in securing funding and getting the pedestrian bridge built. The bridge itself is a splayed fan cable stay type with 2 alternating towers supporting a double-S shaped walkway. On the Omaha side is a spiral walkway leading up. As you cross over the river, the views of the city are spectacular and there are info plaques along the way. The view is even better at night as the bridge is lit up with color changing LED lamps. On the Council Bluffs side is another park with a facilities pavilion, athletic fields, children's playground and an interesting 33 foot tall aluminum sculpture called "Looking Up". Underneath Bob on the Omaha side, you'll also get to meet Omar, the resident bridge troll. Bob is free to all, so you don't have to pay Omar a toll. If you drive here, on the Omaha side is a small parking lot (8 + 2 handicap parking spaces) at the base and a larger one south of the Lewis & Clark Center. There are rideshare bicycle rentals at the base of both sides, so be watchful of them as you walk to one side and they zoom by you. read more

Really nice bridge to walk across connecting Nebraska and Iowa. 3000 ft long. Once you reach the middle you can stand in both states at the same time. Omar lives under the bridge on the Nebraska side and is always available for pictures. read more

Dress accordingly and take the walk! I like walking so I enjoyed it. A young girl was apparently having some issues so she was screaming into her phone as her group passed us but definitely cool to be able to walk between Nebraska and Iowa. read more

While you might be nervous to see construction on the Nebraska side of things (where the Lewis and Clark Landing is), the bridge is still open! They leave a space for pedestrians (and bikers) to access the rest of the bridge. The bridge itself is well maintained and is a stunning 3,000-foot long piece of architecture. I get kind of nervous with heights, so I stuck to near the center of the bridge, and it was wide enough for me to feel safe. There's a clear demarcation of the Nebraska/Iowa state line if you want a photo op commemorating your visit. The views of the river are also gorgeous! There's also a vlog of the bridge apparently (who knew a bridge could have a social media presence?), and OMAR the Troll lurks under the Nebraska side of the bridge if you want more photos. read more

If you're looking for a lovely spot to enjoy a nice day, this is the place to be! You can take a delightful stroll across the Missouri River to Council Bluffs, Iowa. It's a popular place for biking and running, too! And the best part? About halfway across, there's a fun marker where you can stand with one foot in Iowa and the other in Kansas. Part of the bridge is under construction. Got to visit Bob today and walked between the two states, that's the coolest part. Nice walkable, narrow walkway. Would be nice if folks didn't feel the need to leave graffiti on everything. Not cool. The water is moving fast below. read more

We walked over to the bridge from the Heartland of America Park. The 3,000-foot footbridge across the Missouri River is between Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Omaha, Nebraska. I wanted to take a picture of the state line and set one foot in Nebraska and one foot in Iowa. On one set of the words there was graffiti, but overall it was a nice quick stop. read more

A lot of people, maybe even me, were skeptical about the usefulness of this pedestrian bridge into Council Bluffs. Who would use it? Well, now I know, LOTS of people use it. Go take a look, if you don't believe me. It's a nice scenic stroll, and you can take the classic one-foot-in-each-state photo. There have been a LOT of improvements made on each side of the river. I wish there were more nearby places to eat or somewhere just grab a snack or drink, that is definitely lacking The "Baby Bob" will be opening soon on the Omaha side. It will allow a direct walk to the arena/ballpark area. It's an easy walk. Then you can go tell the people at the Omaha Visitor's Center on 10th and Farnam, they will give you this sticker to prove your accomplishment. read more

This is a gorgeous pedestrian bridge that crosse over the Nebraska/Iowa state line. The line is actually marked on the bridge. It was built in 2008 and apparently goes by the name of "Bob". It got its name from former Nebraska Senator Bob Kerrey, who was instrumental in securing federal funding for the bridge. There is a 52 foot clearance below the bridge and its two towers are 200 feet. The bridge has a lot of personality and is popular among walkers and joggers. It connects Riverfront park and Lewis and Clark Landing. The bridge is 3000-foot long and stretches across the Missouri River. You can get some very nice panoramic views from the bridge. Even though it is a pedestrian bridge, you will find bicycylist and electric scooters on the bridge. I did not even know you could take scooters on the bridge, but I saw a few of them motoring. You may not be able to take them all the way across though. I just took a scooter to the bridge on the Nebraska side and got another one when I got to the Iowa side. The bridge is beautiful at night. It is illuminated with color changing LEDs that were donated by Gallup. They really draw your attention and make the bridge an ionic image of the Omaha skyline. The bridge is relatively easy to get to and navigate. This is a viable attraction in Omaha and is a must see. And plus I think it is cool that you can be in two states at the same time. As an added bonus, both ends of the bridge let out to some awesome parks. I highly recommend transiting this bridge. read more

While visiting Nebraska, I wanted to venture into Iowa, so what better way than to walk along the Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge. The bridge is over the Missouri River and it is just beautiful. Free parking in the Nebraska National Parks Visitors' Center. In the center of the bridge, the state line is marked on the bridge. There were people cycling, on scooters, and jogging. A beautiful part of our downtown trails. Nice place to take a walk and get a good view of downtown Omaha, and now ties in nicely to the new Illuminarium and parks. This is part of the 100 mile plus trails that are awesome for walking, running, and biking. The bridge itself straddles the Missouri river at the Iowa Nebraska border, creating a great photo op at the state line. Clearly, if you're afraid of heights, or don't particularly like to walk, then not recommended for you! This is for folks like to get out doors and enjoy the view. Parking at the base of the bridge is a little tight so recommend parking at the Illuminarium or the State Park building next-door to the base of the bridge and walk over. read more

Stopped by this impressive bridge while on road trip. Had a short walk while learning about how the eco system has changed over the decades due to human destruction. There is a small sculpture park in Iowa side. It's good to get out and stretch your legs in crisp cooler air! read more

We were visiting Omaha for a family vacation and I heard about this place from a number of websites. After my family ate, we weren't ready to go back to the hotel yet, and since it was a pleasant evening we decided to check this place out. There are some cute statues at the bottom of the bridge to take pictures with. You can even take a cool picture straddling the Iowa and Nebraska sate line. The walk is a .9k, and if you prove you did the walk across the bridge, you can get a sticker from the visitor center in Omaha.The views of the Missouri River during dusk were awesome, and they keep the area pretty clean. If I lived here, I would definitely come back here. Date nights here would be pretty cool, and you would never be short of things to see here. read more

What a beautiful area of Omaha this is. I decided to stop here to walk my pups and get some air on my extremely long drive from Buffalo, NY to Las Vegas, NV and it was a decision I'm glad I made. This bridge connects the states of Iowa and Nebraska and even has a bridge troll underneath it for you to take photos with. The walk itself is pretty short but with a ton of information plastered all over the bridge it's not only fun but it can be educational as well. Overall, this is a lovely area for locals of both states to come and hang out while getting some sun and enjoying the beautiful views all at the same time. If you live here, or are just passing through this is a must for anyone! read more

If you're looking for some socially distant fun, this is the place. There is so much to do around the bridge and I felt like everyone there was respectful of space. It was quite windy on the bridge Saturday night but that didn't stop me from making my husband take 1000 pictures of me on in Iowa & Nebraska, None made my Instagram carousel but I'll share with ya'll because I love ya. We even stopped to take a picture with Omar the bridge troll. The splash ground was open and operating. Again, just one family was there. A vendor is selling food and gatorade which we got after walking the bridge in the heat. Definitely add it to your covid-19 bucket list. read more

I can't believe I was so excited to walk across a bridge to Iowa. Yet, there I was. The bridge itself, is just that, a bridge that allows you to walk across the Missouri River. You'll share it with other walkers, joggers, bikers and then some. It's a popular attraction. Once you're up on the bridge, there are educational plaques and a couple of cut out standing areas where you can take photos. I especially liked the spot that marked the Nebraska - Iowa state border. From what the locals told me, both Omaha and Council Bluffs are working on implementing and improving an outdoor trail and park area surrounding the bridge. The Omaha side, where I spent most of my time, seems to be a little farther along. They've got the trail system mostly in place and are working on the aesthetics. I especially liked the fountain plaza, Omar, the kids' troll who lives under the bridge and the butterfly garden. I'm confident that the City is on the right path and I'm looking forward to it realizing its plans. I'm also looking forward to enjoying those results when I return. read more

I'm going to be honest with you.... we went on a whim while by the airport and nearly froze to death. Our family was in town, and I had the great idea we should go get our picture on both state lines. It was 22° outside (with a wind speed of 50 mph it felt like), and we left the house quickly so no one had jackets. We ran up the bridge, grab a few pictures to prove we did it, and then ran back to our warmer cars LOL. I definitely plan to go back in the spring so we can actually read the signs and enjoy the view without freezing or succumbing to hypothermia. From what I could tell on my brisk jog: very small parking lot, nice/fun informative signs, great view, and neat a landmark to spark conversations with people. read more

We had an evening and overnight stay in Omaha before hitting the road back to Indy and wanted to hit up a few of Omaha's top downtown spots including Bob the Bridge. We enjoyed a toasty stroll across the bridge and reading the educational signs along the way. Halfway across the bridge and they have a sweet marker to show that you're at the state line of Nebraska and Iowa. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was the amount of trash that was overflowing the trash cans and littered around. Parking can be found on the neighboring streets or by parking at the waterfront park and walking over. read more

Very pretty bridge. It was extremely hard to find to get to it. We walked around all over to finally, by accident, find the path to the bridge. The bridge at night is lit up with different colors. Very pretty. It was actually crowded at night while trying to walk it at around 12am. The river underneath it runs constantly. The bridge oversees the downtown Omaha. I can see it's a very pretty bridge and would walk again if i was staying multiple nights. read more

I took a walk on this bridge two weeks ago. I had just flown into Omaha and it was my very first stop. The bridge was clean and appeared well maintained. Parking is very limited but I was able to find street parking with ease. I was excited to visit this spot as it was the first time I visited a specific landmark that allowed you to be in tso states at once. The views were beautiful and it seemed like an amazing place to bike, walk or run. I would recommend making a quick stop here for a photo op if ever in the area! read more

Nice wide paths just for pedestrians and cyclists! You get a nice view of the skyline and get to straddle two states on this S-curved bridge. Information placards and QR codes available. Adjoining parks have great bike paths. Small free parking area Omaha but street parking available up to around 5PM. read more

Wowzer we pulled up, and decided to walk the bridge,the wind was forceful. Weather person said strong gusts, haha they were correct. The cables were flapping...hair was all over the place and it was in the low 40's...ouch...taking wind chill in factor... We had fun held on tight to our cells why taking photos... The Missouri River was swollen,and flowing quick with what looked like many strong currents. Very nice space to enjoy nature...liked the condos right next door...nice green space all about...and rental mountain bikes about fat! read more

Nice bridge to walk over and get a picture standing in two states at same time. This portion of city looks like it's new and they are building up. Was visiting from out of town to attend concert, so got us out of room and got in a little exercise. read more

The bridge is a great way to start your day. Get a little exercise in while enjoying the Omaha skyline and seeing the great and mighty Missouri River roll underneath. There are not a lot of opportunities in America to walk a pedestrian bridge over such a large body of water. It is architecturally wonderful and designed by my hometown Kansas City firm of HNTB. A place I will return to each time I visit Omaha. read more

The walk across the bridge is an easy stroll ... parking is plentiful on the Iowa side. Some restaurants and parks on the Nebraska side, but unfortunately weren't open yet when we were there ... it's worth the stop ... dogs are welcomed as well. read more

The Durham Museum

The Durham Museum is in the old Union Station. I'm glad they were able to preserve the building…read morebecause it really is spectacular. There are many permanent displays about Omaha history, and there are train cars you can walk through; enthusiastic docents are often there to answer any questions. There are temporary exhibits here as well, and in the summers they will have something cool that the whole family will enjoy. There are lots of programs here, many of them free with admission or membership. I do recommend getting a membership if you think you might want to come at least a couple times in a year. And you probably will want to! There is a soda fountain/snack bar area. The ice cream is great! The food is okay. It's a museum and not a lunch destination. The museum is located right next to Omaha's Old Market.

It was built in 1931 in the Art Deco style and designed by LA architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood. The museum has lots of photographs and examples of materials used that would be a delight for all those interested in architecture. Downstairs was the train depot and where you can go inside and sit in the train cars. Most of the rooms appeared to be part of their permanent collection, but part of the downstairs area has rotating exhibits. The exhibit on display was "The Negro Motorist Green Book" which you may be familiar with if you watched the 2018 film "Green Book." I had a great time at the museum and would return, although check the calendar as I went when the NE SciFest going on and I prefer calmer museum visits. Still, definitely would recommend checking it out!

Their small gift shop (also were you check in) has shirts, pins, and magnets. This is walking distance from the Union Pacific Railroad Museum which is also another place to see in Council Bluffs.

She asked me if I live in Plattsmouth. I said no. She got extremely rude and told me "no, turn around and go back the other way." She has meaness in her tone and is really cold and brass. Her whole demeanor changed when I said I'm not from Plattsmouth. This bridge is a joke.

Exiting from I-29 for Pacific Junction, it is around three miles from the highway before you can see the bridge as you get close. The other nearest options are in Nebraska City or Platte. This bridge has a clearance of 14 feet 5 inches. It is a classic truss bridge that is only twenty feet wide (two narrow opposing lanes!) with concrete sides. The seven spans were built in 1929 and replaced a ferry that previously operated here. On the Nebraska side of the river is a manually operated toll booth which charges $1.75 for cars. The young lady who took my money was friendly enough. There is a small turnoff on the Iowa side where you can get a picture of the bridge there and a small parking area on the Nebraska side where you can stop. [Review 11351 overall, 1128 of 2019. I randomly saw something about the Thomas Dambo troll exhibit the week before I was due to be in…read moreDes Moines for a dog event, so I made a note to try to stop by on my way home if it worked out. I was done with the event a little after lunch time, so was passing through Omaha at about 3 PM - a couple of hours before the garden closed. It was a cooler, overcast day so it was safe for my dogs to hang out in my car for an hour or so. A good bit of luck, since I'm not sure I would have been able to find a shady parking spot. Admission to the garden is roughly $18 for non-members, and when you buy your ticket with a credit card at the self-serve kiosk it gives you an option to cover credit card fees - which I chose to do so all told I paid $21 to see these trolls. I will not that there is one troll that is outside of the entrance to the garden - the one with the little car - so even if you can't justify the admission price it is still worth taking a few minutes to come see that troll. They are all built of reclaimed wood and recycled materials, with incredible detail right down to their fingernails. While I came primarily to see the trolls, the grounds are beautiful. It is still early enough in spring that just a few things were in bloom, but those things were pretty spectacular - such as the field full of dafodils. There were beautiful plantings of other spring bulbs and several magnolias were in bloom. The gardens have some beautiful hybrids as well as traditional cultivars. The trolls were scattered throughout the gardens, but it was not a difficult walk to see them - though there are some short inclines I think it would take no more than an hour to see all of them if that were your only agenda. There is also a troll tram available for a nominal cost. I found strolling through the gardens to be a peaceful break from highway driving. You can still hear some traffic noise, but there's plenty of birdsong as you get away from the entrance. Each of the trolls was unique, but there wasn't any signage to tell you about their unique personalities (you can look that up online, though - and Thomas Dambo's website is a wonderful rabbit hole to go down if you are so inclined). My favorites were the one with the birdhouses and the buddha-like one in the Japanese garden. I almost left right after seeing all of the trolls, but then decided to exit through the conservatory an I am glad that I did. It was warm and humid inside so I didn't stay for too long, but it is packed with tropical foliage including beautiful orchids, pitcher plants, ferns, tropical trees, and a koi pond with the biggest koi I have seen in a very long time. I didn't have much in the way of expectations of Omaha or these gardens when I thought I'd stop to see the trolls, but I am impressed. People were friendly. The gardens are beautiful and it seems family friendly - a children's playground takes up a good chunk of real estate within the garden - and starting in May four-legged friends can walk with you in the gardens on Monday (I think?) evenings. We got our steps in while admiring the greenery and well thought out flowers. My toddler enjoyed Sophia's garden playground the most. While I enjoyed the super massive greenhouse. There were so many photo opportunities. They don't allow outside food or drinks which is a bummer for those traveling with kids! However, there are two cafes that offered food for purchase. It looks like they offer events during the holidays. Looks especially fun during Christmas time, we'll definitely be back!

This is a small monument on a little plaza area located at the end of a small and cozy…read moreneighborhood. If you are driving here, you will find free street parking available within a reasonable walking distance. The area is realtively clean and looks to be in pretty good shape. The monument consists of a tall granite obelisk that was erected in 1911 by the Daughters of the American Revolution to commemorate President Abraham Lincoln's visit to the site in 1859. This is the spot where Lincoln viewed and selected the Eastern Terminus of the first transcontinental railroad built in the US. The bronze plaque on the monument reads as follows: "This monument is to commemorate the visit of Abraham Lincoln to Council Bluffs, Aug 19, 1859. From this point he viewed the extensive panorama of the valley of the Missouri River and in compliance with the law of Congress on November 17, 1863 he selected this city as the eastern terminus of the Union Pacific Railroad." The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. The monument's plaza offers an amazing panoramic view of the surrounding area. The monument is on the top of a hill and I had to take a steep set of stairs to get up there. It was a work out. You will find some benches to sit on around the monument and you will probably need them after transiting up the stairs. As I mentioned, this is a nice spot to visit that give you an awesome view all the way into Omaha, plus there is its historical significance and the opportunity to stand where President Lincoln once stood. This may not be a long consumer of your time. I was there about 15 minutes and moved on to my next destination. I recommend visiting this place on your way to another destination or making this part of another larger itinerary. The Golden Spike and the Black Angel.

During the summer it is a fountain, although the city has been having problems with the piping and it seems to off frequently. If you take the time to stand or sit by the edge of the fountain there is a quiet presence. That it is even here is a story because when the next generations of the Dodge family left Council Bluffs the stature was dismantled and stored in their basement. Many years later when the property was bought with the intent of restoring it to its original look the statue was found. Eventually, a suitable location was found to place it. A personal side note because I live only a few houses from the angel. While they deny it now the Angel goes through stages of legends being told by the kids nearby. She is said to talk or move possibly even cry at certain times of the year. Full moons and Halloween are considered prime times. None of us can verify if any of the legends are true but I know of several 'now adults' who visited the Angel when they were kids usually without their parent's knowledge or approval.

Locally known in Council Bluffs as the "Black Angel," this statue was inspired by visions experienced by Ruth Anne Dodge, the wife of General Dodge, in 1916 on the three nights preceding her death. This memorial sculpture, dedicated in 1920, represents a dream experienced by Ruth Anne Dodge. The angel, on the prow of a boat, extends her hand and offers the water of life. The solid bronze statue, commissioned by the Dodges' two daughters, was created by Daniel Chester French who call the Black Angel one of his finest works. French is known nationally for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. According to the legend, Mrs. Dodge related to family members that she had a vision of being on a rocky shore and, through a mist, seeing a boat approach. In the prow was a beautiful young woman whom Mrs. Dodge thought to be an angel. The woman carried a small bowl under one arm and extended the other arm toward Mrs. Dodge in an invitation to partake of the water flowing from the vessel. Then, according to accounts later published by Mrs. Dodge's daughter, Anne, the angel spoke twice, saying: "Drink, I bring you both a promise and a blessing." The daughter wrote that the vision came three times to her mother and, on the third visit, Mrs. Dodge took the drink as offered and felt "transformed into a new and glorious spiritual being." Mrs. Dodge died immediately after her supposed third vision, on September 5, 1916. She had died in her sleep at her home in New York. Her body was brought back to Council Bluffs where she was buried in a mausoleum in Walnut Hill Cemetery. The memorial was commissioned in 1917 to Daniel Chester French, the same man who sculpted the statue of the Minute Man in Concord, Massachusetts and the Lincoln Memorial Statue in Washington DC. The ten foot tall angel statue is made of solid bronze. The construction of the statue took approximately two years, and the cost of the statue was reported at around $40,000. Council Bluffs began its fine military record during the Civil War when, in 1861, the attack on Fort Sumter brought four companies of the town's volunteers to the famed Fourth Iowa Infantry. In command was Captain Grenville M. Dodge, later promoted to Colonel, then General. As the War ended, Dodge returned to the Bluffs, built an impressive home on Third Street for his wife, Ruth Anne, and family, and took a job as surveyor and chief engineer for the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. Four years prior to the War, Abraham Lincoln, in a personal visit, had designated Council Bluffs as the eastern terminus for this first transcontinental line. Dodge later built railroads all over the world and was president of seven of them before he died. Grenville's daughters, Anne Dodge and Eleanor Dodge Pusey, commissioned and contributed this city's most valuable work of art in memory of their mother, Ruth Anne Dodge. Located very near to the cemetery where The Black Angel is located, is a monument marking the spot where Abe Lincoln selected this as the terminus of The Union Pacific Railroad. This impressive pylon was erected in July, 1911 and commemorates Abraham Lincoln's visit to the site in 1859. From this site, Lincoln viewed and selected the Eatern Terminus of the first transcontinental railroad built on the United States.
