I've been going to Carver's since they used tents on the outdoor market (giving my age away there!!) so every time I go to Hull, I make a bee-line for the restaurant. That's whatI did yesterday and, for the first time in my life, I was very disappointed. My sister ordered a chicken and mushroom pie it looked wonderful when it arrived but once she cut into it, found one mushroom, one piece of chicken and maybe a couple of teaspoons of sauce (just about an empty pie!). We complained and she was brought another pie, which was somewhat better I've had pies which have been filled to the brim of their filling so this, naturally, was very disappointing. I didn't get off lightly either I found a long piece of pot scrubber material in my chips. Yes, the staff did apologise but didn't offer a reduction in our meal at all, which to me, being Canadian, would've been a given. i actually work at bob carvers but not the market place, the oil we fry in is peanut oil, which is one of the most expensive oils you can buy! seen as the majority of you are complaining about the pigeons what are we supposed to do about that exactly we cant close the doors its to steamy? oh and i can assure you now that we do not cook chips from the day before, at a certain time we fry to order, and everything on your plate is fresh out the pan. as for the hair down and fake nails situation 1 we never have been allowed our hair down, everyone i work with always has there hair tied up, as for false nails, well lets just say were not even allowed to wear nail varnish let alone nails! half of your people really dont know what your talking about.. but ive only worked here what 8 years? take my advice dont knock it till you have tried it! read more

This establishment must keep the City Council's Environmental Health department in business. Aside from the fact that the main footfall into the premises seem to be the pigeons which maraud around the restaurant floor in search of discarded tidbits, my main concern is that the staff and management all seem blissfully unaware of their health and safety responsibilities. On more than one occasion I've witnessed staff operating the fryer and rationing out chips with long, greasy, untied hair and teenage serving girls sporting spangly false nails and a menagerie of uncovered pendulous jewellery. Not great! The dining area is generally cluttered with rubbish and looks like it hasn't had a good deep clean since William Wilberforce was alive. Some call it an 'institution', some call it a health hazard. My advice? Stay clear. read more

Finally decided to try this fish and chip after looking round at others in the area. Although it was more expensive we decided to try it due to its 'reputation'. What a disapointment! Although the fish was tasty, the batter was so hard it broke a fork and it was so greasy, it was the worse tasting batter we have ever had. The chips were so rubbery you could have tied them into a figure of eight. One of the staff, who was doing the frying was not wearing any head covering althouh she had long hair that was haging down over her face. With several other fish and chip shops in the area, along with several pubs all with cheaper meals, we were suprised that it has any customers at all. This may have been a one off, but it will be our one and only visit. read more

All I can say is, if you have a strong composition then you might be ok eating here. Personally I would avoid at all costs. Every time I have passed this place it just disgusts me how dirty and unclean it is. Staff handling money and chips without washing their hands. The rest of the place just beggars belief how someone hasn't gotten seriously ill, with pigeons frequently flying in and out, why would you want to go in? Grease, grease and more grease on pretty much any surface you look at, amongst many other less than friendly microscopic organisms you don't want to know about. Please just walk past this place and never enter! read more
