Jeff Spiegel is my personal accountant and has been for more than a decade…read more I came across Kyung P. review randomly as I was using Google to find Jeff's contact info (cell phone out of order at the moment) and I feel compelled to respond. Jeff Spiegel is literally the best accountant I know - and I am in a better position to evaluate accountants than most people (including Mr. Kyung P). I founded and ran a national real estate advisory firm based in Walnut Creek, CA for years. I had over 300 "accredited investor" clients of my own and I supervised more than a dozen professionals in multiple offices who had clients of their own. As a result I dealt with accountants not only in this area but those with practices based in many locations in the US. Because of the specialized nature of my business (specialized in tax deferred exchanges of real estate) I had the opportunity to interact in detail with many accountants at the request of our mutual clients or because the nature of the business situation required it. Over time I often received referred business from these accoutants. I also had the opportunity to refer business to CPAs on a frequent basis. I believe strongly that a competent accountant is often the most important individual in a person's financial life. They are one of the best potential sources of unbiased advice - they do (or at least should) understand the client's financial situation completely. More importantly they rarely have a financial motive or incentive to sell anything - other than their own services which are typically billable at a standard rate. As a result of my work I have seen hundreds of accountants in action. JEFF SPIEGEL IS MY PERSONAL ACCOUNTANT. I believe he is one of the most trustworthy competent individuals in the CPA field. I have referred numerous satisfied clients to him in the past and I still regularly refer individuals to him (including my own parents!) Jeff is successful at what he does and as a result he has earned the uncommon "luxury" of politely dismissing clients that he does not wish to do business with. Although I can not say for sure I believe this was probably the case for Mr. Kyung P. The fact that Mr. Kyung P chose to "flame" Jeff on Yelp leads me to believe that Jeff made the appropriate decision - yet again!

In fact, I had settled on a firm on the Peninsula, but they were unresponsive with some early tax questions that I had so I kept looking and found B&H. He worked me through a complicated issue at the end of the year w/ an IRA to Roth conversion. Anyway, I'm all about do-it-yourself, but if things are getting too complicated, you should probably call a pro :-P

All handled with aplomb. After I started using them, I've been happy to have API do my taxes for my much simpler full-time positions and small-business corporation for several years. Great, quick, friendly, expertly detailed and totally professional.

If you are looking for an accountant with a lack of security, controls, and communication then API…read moreis the choice for you. We went to API in February and hoped to hire them as our long term accountant for personal taxes. We dropped off our tax documents and from there the lack of communication started. We were never provided instructions on what the process is, no quote on how much the service was going to cost before work was to be done - even though we were new clients (we were just provided a range). Our taxes should not be that complicated - married couple with no kids and one rental condo property. With no forewarning, our paperwork was passed off to a different accountant (Tim Mulgew) than the initial person we engaged with. Then we were provided a bill for 2.5x the original quoted range with no explanation except they considered the tax scenario to be complicated. If our individual tax circumstances are complicated, I would hate to see how API handles taxes for businesses. Ignoring all of the above, that is not even that big of a deal until we realized all of our personal and financial information was leaked. 1. API sent us an email with a PDF tax summary including but not limited to SSN, address, date-of-birth, employer information, phone number, bank information, and other financial details unsecured. No password protection on the document - nothing. 2. They sent out this email to the wrong email address, not once, but multiple times even after we informed them they sent it to the wrong party. 3. After realizing this blunder they provided us no steps or guidance to mitigate the situation. I promptly requested a call back from Tim, but never got one. I was informed by the initial person we engaged with that Tim was visiting his brother. Ok, not getting a call back for one day, or even one week is understandable. Not getting ANY calls or emails back from Tim, speaks volumes on reliability. I had to go out on my own to do research wasting many hours, contact the appropriate institutions, and purchase identity theft protection to safe guard my information. API said they would reimburse me for the identity theft protection but never did. I also question the accounting practices of API. I submitted our exact same tax paperwork for the year to two other accounting firms to validate (one local accountant and the other is one of the largest accounting firms in the country.) The two other accounting firm's calculations are quite close, but API's return was thousands of dollars off! If Tim and/or the owner of API reads this post feel free to reply and give us an excuse.
