I've used BNF's mold inspection services twice-- for my home and my sister's. Both inspectors (Jack and Jay) were professional, knowledgeable, and helpful. They thoroughly answered all of our questions, advised on the most effective testing methods, and explained what made sense to focus on and why. I came away from both visits with peace of mind, as the first principle of recovering from mold illness is getting out of the exposure. Thanks to BNF, I know both places are safe . And if I ever doubt it, they quickly answer follow-up questions. I also like their reports, which include a detailed explanation of each point of the inspection and remediation recommendations (and they can provide contacts for remediators (is that a word?) as well-- all excellently reviewed too). When you're in need of an air quality test, it's usually for some awful reason. Like in our case. Our neighbors had a sewage leak that leaked into our newly finished basement so we had Jay come out to do an air quality test, and we're so happy we made that decision. Paula in the office set everything up and followed through in getting Jay over quickly. Jay was super pro and gave me some suggestions on keeping the air quality high after we do the remediation. I called BNF to have my apt tested for mold from a refrigerator leak. Not only was he a pleasure to work with but he was very educated on Mold and honest. he found things that the other person who my building had hired to test didn't find or never tested it to begin with. Two days later when I got the report back, Jay went over on the phone the entire report with me with extreme patience and answered any questions I had. He was also available on the phone when I called him days later with more questions. It was great to do business with them. My wife and I have used Justin a few times and have recommended him to others as well. He goes over everything very thoroughly. He is extremely knowledgeable about all the workings of a home and is more than happy to explain anything you have a question about. Nice, professional, and has a lot of high-tech equipment, but be cautious about hiring him for a hidden mold inspection. Air quality tests are cool, but do little for you if the source of the problem cannot be identified. The three stars are because we got a refund. I can't, in good conscience, give more. I thought it looked like mold issue. I was googling and found him. I was surprised he had a Dr degree. That's the reason we called him. They visited the next day on time. I recently was in touch with this company due to a smell coming from some rooms in my apartment. They came out to my home, assessed the problem areas and unfortunately there wasn't much they could do, due to the fact that there wasn't a mold issue. Prior to my living here, someone had cats and needless to say, it's quite a smell and I assumed it could have been mold also but it wasn't. BNF was very honest and did not try and rip me off to take samples and use my disadvantage to their advantage. Thank Goodness there's good people out there. I selected BNF Consulting on the basis of the many five-star Yelp reviews it had received, and can report that Justin Joe, the proprietor of this one-person company, deserves all these and more. He came to my home twice to test for mold. The second visit was necessary because the lab analyses of the first set of air samples he took showed that the mold remediation work that had been done was incomplete. Unlike my experience with other companies I had contacted, he didn't require or try to talk me into unnenessary tests that jack costs way up. Apart from this, his rates are very reasonable, especially compared to quotes I received over the phone from others. His bill in fact came to a bit less than half of the quote I received from the RTK Environmental Group, a relatively large and prominent testing and inspection company. Unlike the environmental hygienist I had initially hired, Justin used state of the art equipment. Rather than opening a jar or test tube and capturing a tiny, relatively random air sample to test, he ran seventy-five liters of air through a device that collects spores, while running a fan to stir up spores that might have settled on surfaces, and to draw air toward the testing device. Without having to be asked, he explained everything he was doing, step-by-step and with great clarity. He answered all my questions in detail, while at the house and after the lab results came back. It isn't necessary to know that this guy has a Ph. D. in nuclear engineering, to say nothing of various certificates for mold and asbestos testing, to realize he's extremely smart and knowledgeable. I also found him to be equally scrupulous, meticulous, and painstaking, to say nothing of being very friendly and approachable. Rather than saving a few dollars, he pays the lab a surcharge so that the results were sent to him and forwarded to me with no additional charge the day after he took the air samples. It's also worth mentioning that, unlike many companies that offer environmental inspections and testing, as well as remediation, which is an obvious conflict of interest and should be avoided for this reason, BNF does hygienist-work only, and is not associated with any remediation companies. I owe a thank-you to all those on Yelp who gave BNF the five-star reviews that caught my attention when I was searching for a good, reasonbly priced environmental hygienist. P.S. With regard to the three-star review dated 3/13/2016, finding the exact location of hidden mold in a room is not within the capability of existing equipment. An environmental hyienist can confirm the presence and extent of mold in a room or section of a room, and offer guidance on where a remediation team should begin searching this, but finding its exact location(s) involves exposing whatever might be hidden from view within walls and above ceilings. The environmental hygienist does not himself perform the necessary demolition work. read more

Justin Joe was extremely thorough on my co-op inspection last week. He was on time, very polite, understanding, helpful and more than happy to have me follow him through various rooms as I jotted down notes as he went section by section. I'm very happy with the outcome, of the inspection, his attitude, as well as the 30 page report which I received 24 hours later. The only reason I'm giving this 4 out of 5 stars is because it's a co-op building, there was no chance of getting the boiler or roof or really anything structural inspected without probably weeks notice. Great people and great service. The few naysayers who show up here probably work for one of the competitors or expected something of great value for nothing. Our insurer used one of these only to find that the guy who then representing himself as working for the environmental testing firm now identifies himself, otherwise, as working as a claims adjuster for the insurer! Fraudulent misrepresentation ?? Beware of the snake oil sellers in this field where NYS licensure is a comparatively low bar. Justin Joe is a Ph.D. in industrial hygiene rather than a retiree or someone from the building trades buying a franchise. Note: this is my second review for Justin (first review posted on 1/30/16). If you've read my first review, you already know how impressed we were with Justin's work ethic, thoroughness, and efficiency. Unfortunately, the first house we looked at did not work out (although lucky for us, as in retrospect, there were too many issues that concerned us about that house). Given what we thought of Justin's work, we immediately contacted him to inspect a second house for us - which he did on February 13 - the coldest Valentine's Day weekend on record! Once again Justin was there on time, was very detail-oriented, patient with our questions and, perhaps most telling of his professionalism, did not rush any of the outside inspection despite the frigid temperatures. As we were under a very tight timeline for this house, Justin worked with us to get his (48 page!) report to us within 24 hours of the inspection. This proved to be very helpful in getting us to contract by the deadline with confidence in what we were purchasing. In sum, we could not be more pleased with his work. He is a highly knowledgeable, honest and objective, and is very responsive to calls and emails - even after his work is complete! We're happy to be done with this process (for now, at least!), but would certainly have no hesitation in using him again if/when it's time for our next home! read more
