The negatives about this location: *To anyone SELLING their books to BMV, I highly recommend doing so at one of their two other locations in Toronto. My reasoning for this is the following: you will NOT get the price you deserve for your books. As a previous customer mentioned here, there is no consideration for the effort and time it takes to bring a bag of books to this location. * While I completely understand that BMV needs to be frugal in order to keep their business afloat, the price offered to sellers is pitiful. For 5 books (including hardcovers and a full series) I received 10$. That doesn't even cover the cost of my transit tickets back home. Definitely not worth selling your books at this particular location. Small bit mighty. This second (or first, theirs, whatever order you go to them in) outpost of the BMV Bookstore mini-chain still keeps up the greatness that Bloor St has, but in a more compact form. The staff are friendly, and while they lack the real estate of other larger locations, you can always find something good there. For some of the feature books they put out in the tables, I've noticed they distribute them amongst all the locations, so if you were looking for a particular book that then sold out, you can check at the other locations. This location in particular I've found is good for older magazines and Blu Rays, but I've also found some good coffee table books here. Always worth the trip. BMV rocks! read more

This review is only for selling your used books. The cashier/staff is behind a counter so they get to scan the books and offer you a price even if they can sell it at a much higher price, they'll offer you very low. I brought a lot of other books and they wouldn't even attempt to scan them to check for resale value. I felt it was very subjective but I didn't have time to sell them elsewhere so I took whatever offer they gave me for few books and I asked them to donate then (about 15 books or so). Overall, if you don't have time to go elsewhere, this is an OK way to donate a bunch of books and make a few dollars if you get lucky based on whether they want your book or not. read more

It's nerdy because of its amazing comic book collection and old magazines and comic book guides. It's perverted because of it's wall-o-porn DVDs in the back. Cheap books. Great deals on graphic novels. But, it's a shame that some of the quality of the store seems to be degraded by the man who hangs out in the back (perhaps the owner) and snidely scoffs at teenagers who ask if certain types of books might be found within, or who hovers like a hawk over those spending a bit too long at the comic rack. It's still a great store, and it has great deals, and I quite like it - you just need to try your best to avoid that man, lest he bring you down. read more

Perhaps my favourite BMV bookstore. Small. Quirky. Entertaining. Packed to the gills with books. I could spend all day here. It's all here in a big intense hodge-podge layout. Friendly staff. No rush. No where to sit and read like in the big stores. But that's not how discount book stores operate. With their amazing selection and prices you will end up buying something awesome on impulse nearly every time. Recent purchases of mine have included a well-known Go strategy guide, a graphic guide to Stephen Hawking, True Lies (hey, it's not on iTunes, Netflix nor amazon prime), an ImagineFX magazine, "Failed It!", a book on the Nile river, Thug and Thug cookbook. That's many times over what I've picked up at big box bookstores :) Go in. Look around. You'll have fun browsing and shopping, I pretty much guarantee it. read more

This place was a gem. There was such a nice selection of second hand books, comics and other things. I spent a good 20 to 30 minutes browsing their comics section and there was a lot of selection. It could be a tight squeeze at times bc there was a lot of people and the layout wasn't really traffic friendly but it wasn't all too bad. The place reminded me of some hoarders wet dream. There was just a lot of disheveled things everywhere but that's the expectation.. this isn't a borders or Barnes and Noble.. It added to the charm of it all. If I ever find myself in Toronto again, I'd definitely stop by a second time. Real nice place to just browse and kill time. read more

During my visit a few days ago I found a gem of a book that I tried ordering online (it never arrived, I got a refund) and the price was lower than the one I found online. BMV is an OK bookstore, I go here primarily for the movies, they have a decent section of used DVDs and Blu-rays. If you're lucky you can find a deal compared to other retailers. One issue is that they give you REALLY low offers when you're trying to sell them anything. I attempted to sell some old textbooks and they only offered my $2 per book, I paid $20-25 for them new but I thought they would offer AT LEAST $5-6 per book. Another time I had 2 copies of a movie, I got one as a gift, so I didn't have a reciept. It was brand new still in the package, was a fairly recent movie (from last year) and they offered me $5. You would think that for a movie brand new still in the package they would offer at least $10 when they could easily double their money and sell it for $20. Another issue is that some of the staff, in my opinion, you may disagree, are unapproachable, condescending and rude. BMV is an OK place to buy from but don't sell anything here they give you complete low-ball offers usually around $1-3per item. read more

Everyone else has summed up the buying experience pretty well...I thought I'd share my selling experience. I'd been holding on to about 10 years worth of MAD Magazines from the 70s. I was in here one day and noticed that they had an area for well displayed and packaged vintage MADs. I asked if they were still buying and they said they were. I brought them in on a Tuesday, but unfortunately the "comic buyer" was only in on Fridays and Saturdays. Rather than schlep them home, I just left them for him. On Friday, he called me with the result. They would buy nearly all of them (except for a few damaged ones) and I considered the price very fair. Yesterday, almost a week after getting the call, I dropped in to get my cash and rejects, a transaction that couldn't have been smoother. They were honest, efficient and well organized. Though not as large and in charge as its amazing Bathurst location, I actually prefer this BMV for fiction. It has a better selection of my fav authors: Vonnegutt, Salinger, Palahniuk, Coupland, Hesse, Bukowski, Miller, etc... As for the other sections it's definitely lacking but you can't be all things to all people right? Make sure you stop by here BEFORE going to World' Biggest Bookstore next door. I made the mistake of buying a book there only to find it $12 cheaper at BMV :-( read more

MY FAVORITE BOOK STORE! I'm obsessed with books, trust. I have full, massive shelves at home. I can usually find the stuff I'm looking for here, not to mention it's SO cheap. I got the second copy of Hunger Games here for 6.99 (just for comparison). They also have an amazing vintage magazines and comic books. I'm a big fan, I got a 1964 LIFE magazine from there with Khruschev on the cover (what a cuuuutie!!). If you're walking around downtown core, go here! It's right next to world's biggest book store and it's 70% cheaper. read more

This location of BMV is really a small version of the main store on Bloor (see my previous review for 471 Bloor Street West), but seems to carry a smaller selection of used books. It stocks a lot of new publisher's overstock material on tables near the front, then has used books shelved along the walls and in the back, but also has a fair bit of new reprints mixed into the used sections. Literature and recent fiction seem to take up the largest portion of the store, and then there are 1-2 columns of other types of non-fiction like history, science, philosophy and religion. There are also a few columns of used DVDs behind the service counter. Overall, not a bad place to check in at once in a while, but a much smaller selection than is available at the other 2 stores. The pricing is similar, generally between $4-10 for paperbacks and $10+ plus for hardcovers. (Incidentally, I think this is the first BMV location that I ever visited, since it was next to the dearly-departed World's Biggest Bookstore.) read more

Though not quite as large as what would be the mother-ship store on Bloor St., BMV on Edward and Yonge tends to have a lot more new and new looking books! Maybe this is because people at Yonge and Dundas read less books, maybe it's because they have more bookstores within a small perimeter, or maybe Ryerson students are less abusive to their texts than U of T peeps...let's not get into this discussion!! When looking for your author of choice, you are likely to find the selection best recommended for courses of the adjacent universities. That being said, prices are great and a lot more reasonable than Indigo. For a better price, I find you often get the same level of advice from the staff and get the same exact book, which means BMV FTW. I also like the fact that they actually have a decent number of books on sale whenever you go there (and fortunately I don't have to buy a stupid membership card to enjoy the sale!) The only cons in my view are the somewhat limited selection compared to BMV1 and Indigo and more importantly the chaotic state of the philosophy section (no pun intended). Drop by if you're in the area...probably one of the better spots to spend money and time in the neighborhood. read more

I'm in love. His name is BMV Books. I don't know why it took so long for me to discover this place, but I'm so glad I've found it. Contrary to what I thought before, BMV does sell new or like-new books. The prices are very reasonable (I mean VERY!) and even cheaper than Amazon (where I use to go to for books.) This location is not as big as the flagship store on Bloor Street, so the selection is not as great. However, for the price you pay for the books compared to Indigo next door, it's a win! read more

BMV is a great place for cheap books. Sometimes I love the "new book" smell, and sometimes I want a cheap book that has been loved. BMV is where you come for the latter. I took a bunch of English courses in university and bought a bunch of my novels from here so I didn't have to spend $30 per book at the Ryerson bookstore. They've got most of the classics, as well as a bunch of rare gems that you'll find if you look for long enough. It's a tiny place, but it also makes it more manageable. A good place to browse, but head over to the Bloor location if you're searching for something specific. read more

This BMV is much smaller than its sister on Bloor. It's much more cramped and altogether feels as it should: like a used book store. The staff here is fairly knowledgeable, some more helpful than others. If you ask the guy at the back desk (not the cashier), he can usually help you find (or at least point you in the right direction) what you're looking for, if they have it. The store is located directly next door to the World's Biggest Bookstore, which is both good and bad. I'm sure it results in a lot of business going next door. That said, I'm sure that I'm not the only one who often goes into World's Biggest, sees something interesting and then goes next door to BMV to see if it's for sale. BMV's prices are that much better than regular retail that I find the power to assert my lazy self into doing such things. read more

My friend and I were on a book hunt one day - especially bargain ones. Earlier that day, we went to another BMV Books location down at Queen and the selection there amazed us. However, this location was probably two to three times larger than the one down at Queen, yet it was impossible to find a book that interested us and seem reasonable to make the purchase. You can get all sorts of great deals here. Everything is well organized and for those of you interested in selling your items, I find you can get a pretty darn good deal for most things. The place has so much to offer that I'm often very surprised they can fit so many books into one (relatively) small building. My go-to independent chain for books. Because I live in the area, the Edward location is the one I go to the most. But I also love their pop-up on Queent St, and the location at Yonge & Eg. Always cheaper than Chapters/Indigo and World's Biggest Bookstore. Although they may not have the title I'm searching for, I always find that it ends up showing up at some point. So unless I absolutely need to have a specific book, I usually wait and check BMV's selection. Most books are in great condition and are very reasonably priced. Many are brand new and simply publisher overstocks, otherwise they are gently used. I find they offer a wide selection of books (and this location has an old magazine & large porn movie section too if you're into that). I've also sold some books to BMV; although you don't get a ton of money back, it sure is extra dough in your pocket for books you'll never read again. read more

Right next to The World's Biggest Bookstore (aka Indigo/Chapters) and still booming. This is one of several locations around Toronto I spotted, and I seriously had trouble limiting my purchases. I got a pristine copy of 'Griffin & Sabine' for $3 and spent close to a half hour browsing through the CanLit section. I ended up with 4 novels (secondhand) and 1 DVD, and spent around $30. I would totally support this bookstore--weekly probably--if I lived in Toronto. Books in pristine and near-perfect condition, DVDs of movies and television series, vintage magazines galore, fiction, non-fiction, comics, sci-fi, cooking, graphic novels, biographies, art and design books, .... seriously, I was in heaven. When you're beside the worlds biggest bookstore (namely, "The World's Biggest Bookstore" [http://www.yelp.ca/biz/worlds-biggest-bookstore-toronto]), it'd be easy for people to miss you as they walk by. BMV stands for "Books-Magazines-Videos" and sells both new and used copies of all videos that they have. This appears to be a decent haven for the Nerds among us, as when I lined up to make my purchase, I could not help but overhear three separate discussions about the new Battlestar Galactica series. You will definitely be able to find items here that are not available in most other similar types of stores. Their 'Comedy' DVD section is the one that got me, where I found not one but two copies of the "ASSSCAT" improv DVD that I stumbled across. Heard of them before? Neither have I. But they were in the Comedy section and it turned out to be fantastic. This would be a place I'd start if I had hard-to-get books, magazines, or videos I wanted to get my hands on. read more

This particular BMV location is nice and convenient because it's right near the busy sector of downtown's Yonge and Dundas. That means that Eaton Centre and the subway is just a street over. For those that attend Ryerson University, it's also a nice spot to come to in order to find books at a discounted price (students need to save all the money they can!). Everything is well-organized with large signs to point you in the right direction. I am particularly fond of their fashion section as well as their DVD movie section, but all areas of the store are worth browsing. You can find so many obscure titles in this store, which makes this such a fun place to come to. I recently decided to come here and spend more time hovering around their fiction section. They often have several copies of the same book if it's a best-seller from a few years ago. Books are in great condition (like new) and for an amazing price. Before you go to Amazon or Indigo, come here because chances are they might what you're looking for (or more) and you'll get it for a 1/3 to 1/2 of the original price AND it'll be in almost-new condition. read more

Not as big and without the extensive comic section that the Bloor street location possesses this used/new bookstore hybrid still boasts an extensive and interesting selection of books. It's way too easy to spend more time in here than the much larger World's Biggest Bookstore next door. Your also a lot more likely to find a deal here as well. They offer decent money on trade ins and, on top of books/graphic novels, they also have DVDs and blu-rays...and an adults only section in the back (if that's what your into? Haha.) If you have the choice though, go for the much larger and much more extensive 3 floor Bloor Street location. Each one of the floors is bigger than this location. read more

The "BMV" book store is a great place to find books you have always wanted to read at very cheep prices. You can find both new and used books. The new books go at about half the cover price, and I have found great classics such as "Sense & Sensibility" by Jane Austen for as cheep as $2.99. This particular location has a pretty good size comic collection as well as a back area where they sell porn. :op I prefer the larger location on Bloor St. for their layout and because I have a better chance of finding what I'm looking for. The owner of the location at Eglington & Young is also very welcoming and helpful. Great chain of stores. The only down side to this location is the crazy guy who sits out on the street and constantly yells at you, but we won't hold that against the store, not their problem. read more

Post-Covid, they are anal about the kind of mask you wear. Regardless of being a long standing and loyal customer, I got told off at the cashier's desk for having a mask with a filter valve. ( I had two filters in mine). They said, if they had seen me before hand, they would have asked me to change the mask use a flimsy paper mask they had on their desk. This guy claimed to have read several articles in US publications saying that filtered masks were not good. They should at least have a sign posted on the outside door as to what type of masks they prefer and not wait till the customer makes a purchase and then upbraid them. read more

The BMV Bookstore located at 10 Edward Street (Yonge and Edward, just north of Dundas) is an amazing store! Very well laid out, neat and organized with incredible merchandise, from comic books, to used dvds, new and used books, all with great prices. They also buy used books and dvds and treat you fairly and with respect. Great staff...knowledgeable, friendly, and very approachable. A wonderful change from the run of the mill chain stores. I was appalled when I went to this BMV Books location recently to sell a good number of my used magazines, many of which were purchased there as used or brand-new. The owner told me I could leave them there and that I should return in an hour. On the one hand, I appreciated his not telling me to come back on another day, as some used bookstore employees do, as the magazines were quite heavy to carry around, whether on foot or on the TTC. On the other hand, I thought that having to kill a whole hour seemed extreme. When I returned to the store, the owner had already gone through the magazines and assessed them. I don't know when he took a look at them, but the thought did cross my mind that perhaps he could have told me to come back in half an hour rather than an hour. The dollar amount he offered me was substantially lower than what I was offered and accepted when I was there a month earlier selling similar magazines, so I declined to accept the most recent offer. On the previous visit, I had even fewer magazines but was offered 60% more by a store employee than what I was offered recently by the owner. Doesn't make sense. BMV Books is one of a number of used bookstores in the city that demand you go into the store if you're selling a lot of books, magazines, etc. While I understand that a staff member may have a hard time telling you over the phone whether your items will be purchased without the items being viewed yet, many of these individuals often can't even give you a straight answer as to whether their stores are even interested in purchasing your types of books and magazines. No regard is given to the time it takes someone to bring the items in and lug them around; I have found this indifference to customers at both this location and the Annex location whenever I have called to find out whether the store was interested in buying certain types of books and magazines. read more

Fell in love back in the early 2000s, when this was the only location and it was a little scuzzy, especially next to bright, big WBB. I scrounged the place for Star Trek novels that hadn't been mangled by the wire shelves, and bought random books that blew my mind then and now I look at and wonder what I was thinking (they were a little pervy, that's why). BMV is pretty much a no-brainer as a go-to place for books. No, you might not always find a specific book, but it's so much cheaper than new, and they often have new books anyway. And they have comics, and if they have the ones you want, you can save a BUNDLE. Now, for selling to them. I've only had one experience, when I moved from my parents' house. I brought in pounds and pounds of books. I brought in several books I had bought from them. They didn't give me more than $1-2 a book, and didn't buy all of them. I don't know what made them buy one book and not another. And you know what? It really didn't bug me. If you already have a car (or your dad does), it's better than dropping them off for $0 somewhere else. They're a business, and if they don't want to buy something, then whatever. They take the risk of buying my books and I don't really care if they make a big profit, because I don't have the time or space to sell my books off one by one for more. I was pretty happy with what I got. That all said, I'd advise tempering your expectations. If you live in the downtown area and it's not a big pain to get down to a location, selling your books can be worth it for you. The more effort you have to put into doing this, the more likely you'll be disappointed by the returns. For anyone expecting to hit the jackpot, you won't. I read several reviews where they had a bad experience selling because of the buyer's attitude, which sucks. I don't discount those experiences at all. For me, I actually had a really positive experience. The buyer wasn't insanely nice, but he was fairly open about what he wanted and didn't. He also offered to dispose of the books neither of us wanted (and if he just sold them anyway ... again, I was just going to trash or give them away). THEN. He found out I was moving so he said they didn't have boxes at that location, but the Annex one did if I wanted free boxes. That was nice. read more
