Brought comic books to sell at BMV on 471 Bloor St W. The comics guy was very short -not pleasant to deal with. After getting payed he commented that I should call before coming in -that he could have been off. I don't know what he was trying to say since he is obviously in the store and just bought comics from me. After saying I called 5x times and always got voice mail response "mailbox full". He again said I should call before coming in several times. After some back and forth he finally mentioned that BMV gets many calls. I should call before coming to the store so I surmise I should call continuously until I don't get voicemail response the day before coming in to check if he is working. read more

During these strange pandemic times, this place has been an absolute haven for me. The staff are always amazing, and now they provide hand sanitizer, they wear masks, and they have the cashier behind the Plexiglass. I don't think they're buying books right now (maybe call ahead to ask before lugging a backpack there), but I appreciate that they've been keeping up-to-date with the latest books. I've been buying gifts from BMV for ages; the books are discounted and they're usually in new or like-new condition. BMV bookstore is a classic for Torontonians. This place has a wide variety of new and old, classic books. They also have DVDs, CDs, blu-rays, and even VHS Cassettes. I prefer coming here for my books than going to the big-store book shops since they have he exact same copies, just marked down significantly; sometimes the prices are less than half of what you would pay in a big store. I find myself here every time I visit downtown. There's always something new for me to look at and new (and old). books for me to add to my collection. BMV has held a very very special spot in my heart, this location in focus has helped me in so many ways. being the biggest location out of the three, this location has four floors of everything and anything, literally with this location, less then a handful of times, I've walked out with nothing, which says alot as I've been going to them for a decade now. I've saved a small fortune with my impressive book collection, and in a very dark period of my life, i had to sell some books and dvds, with the money i was able to get through the last month of college. billed as torontos largest second hand book store, its always worth coming to this location, if you are after something, or if you have some time to kill in this area. the store has the best hours pretty much always being open. the floors are as follows basement - music, dvds, music/movie related books first floor - books second floor - books/kids section/language third floor - comics/game books/ D&D all of the floors are accessible by stairs only, and unfortunately in the very very hot days, the third floor is not cool at all, so sometimes its not worth it to go all the way up. the staff are super friendly, and always willing to help. this location is ridiculously close to spadina station(take the walmer exit) and parking is available on the road, if you're lucky one of my highest recommendations for this establishment, as I've saved a small fortune. read more

Upstairs there is a huge selection of children's books. A number of popular series can be found there, ranging from hardcover to board books. BMV is a book lover's paradise and the vision of a rom-com date night. Though it's not exactly your neighbourhood basement used book store, you'll definitely find books in great condition at discounted prices, and usually multiple copies. You have three floors of new, used, popular, rare, paperback, hardcore ... you name it! The staff aren't the friendliest, but they do have an insane knowledge of everything in the store and will help you find what you're looking for, or at least lead you to the right (albeit random) section. You can also sell used books here. They are extremely picky about what they are looking for, and you won't get a lot back, but if you are just trying to clear out your bookshelf, they will also donate anything they won't buy. I have ended many a date in the Annex at BMV, I just can't stay away. I love them and I curse them. I love: their knowledgeable sales staff, their huge selection of classic fiction, that they sell vinyl and DVD's, how cheap new-ish books are compared to Chapters. I curse: their discount prices that keep me away from smaller independent book sellers, and that the (otherwise lovely) staff can't tell you where anything is. They have typical sections "theatre" "canadian" "food" etc, but organization within those categories is non-existent. It's open late, and is a great place to get lost and block out the rest of Toronto. It's rare to make it out empty handed, but it's about 80% cheaper than Chapters. I hate to admit it but this is one of the places that I potentially not be visiting for a long time. The convenience of having multiple books in my iPad eliminates clutter and saves a lot of space that I can't not justify buying paper books again. But this is my go to place if I can't find an electronic version of an old book. Book lovers, BMV is your place. I have been a fan since the beginning. Wide collection of CHEAP art books - photography, videography, architecture and comics. Big section on cook books and travel books too. Oprah lover? Self help at the back. There are also cheap children books but it's a tiny section. You won't find good computer books though... this is not that kind of store. BMV knows what a second hand book should be - cheap and books in good condition. I don't know how they can slash their prizes so much but BMV does not only sell second hand books, they also brand new books at almost half the cover prize. This place is magnificent! read more

I love BMV so much, I could spend hours here. You can pretty much find everything you're looking for here, maybe bar one or two titles. I've been looking for a certain book for the last few months to no avail (in both brand new book stores like Indigo, as well as other second hand book stores in the city), and upon checking out the random sale items on the street outside the other day, I looked down and it was right in front of me for $1.99 (RRP $28, waaaaah)! So make sure you check out the tables outside- a lot of it IS junk but there's loads of gems there too! BMV rules. read more

As a bookworm and compulsive book buyer, I'm beyond thrilled to have discovered BMV Books on Bloor! With three floors of well-stocked, good quality used books, it's easy to spend a full afternoon browsing the goods. Don't expect to find brand spanking new releases (it's a used bookstore after all), but bestsellers and classics are well represented as well as music and movies in the basement. For $23 (after tax) I picked up four good quality used books (three of which look new), which would have been totally impossible at Chapters or even an independent bookstore like Nicholas Hoare (which I love, by the way). Case in point: just a week ago I purchased the paperback of David Sedaris' "When You Are Engulfed in Flames" at Nicholas Hoare for something like $21. At BMV, I saw the hardback for $6.99. My heart just about broke. It's clear that on price and quantity, BMV wins big time. Highly recommended. read more

BMV Books has got to be my favourite book store, with books in brand new condition for a fraction of retail price, what's not to like? They organize their books by sections and I think major of the first floor is their fiction and literature. I like how they lay their books out on the tables near the cash registers, which makes it good for browsing for the next book to read. They usually have some pretty good picks on the table varying from classics to popular fiction. They have a case for their collectibles and vintage books. Downstairs they have videos and cds and upstairs they even have a whole room dedicated to comic books. The only downside to this store is that they most likely wouldn't have just released books, as it is an used book. Browsing around this store makes for a wonderful, adventure-filled afternoon! read more

I can't believe my trip to Toronto is over. I met up with a Tumblr friend of mine this past Saturday and after dinner, she decided for us to stop by BMV to check out some books as we both love books and bookstores. Awesome decision. There's a wonderful selection of books (in good condition if I may add) for great prices! This bookstore is spacious (also three floors) and everything is labeled neatly--you know where to go for classics, psychology/self-help, cooking, art, photography, travel, etc. I picked up The Exorcist for $8 and two other books outside the bookstore for $1 each (I tried to limit myself or else I would've easily purchased the whole bookstore). They have a front section of remainders on tables for really good prices. The shelves to the back are hit-or-miss. I found one exact title that I was looking for but not three others (relatively mainstream), so you won't find it as exhaustive as your typical Barnes and Noble. However, the store is clean, bright, and uncluttered, which makes for a pleasantly efficient shopping experience. It also makes it devoid of personality, but you can't have everything. They have old VHS tapes as well as a bunch of DVDs (many on sale 4 for $20 the day that I visited); they even have comics in the basement and a few LPs. I noticed a lonely single shelf of Xbox 360 and Wii games and looked around for regular Xbox games but found none. I wonder why they would sell 360 but not regular Xbox? Seems like there would be more market for the latter, as well as more supply. Oh well. read more

I was visiting Toronto last week and have to say we loved the city, it's people and the BMV bookshop !!! The prices are excellent and they have many obscure offerings among the many shelves and floors in the shop. I loved how they have the floors separated and the care they put into each section too. The comics located on the top floor is incredibly solid !!! They have just about anything that you might be looking for, and the staff are very knowledgeable as well. The moment i walked into the shop, i first spotted an awesome Hip Hop cd from a philly group known as The Goats "Tricks of the shade" !!! i couldn't believe my eyes as i have been looking for a decent copy of their first cd for quite some time. Best of all it was priced at 6.99 which is super fair if you see what it goes for on Discogs. I also found some great Catalonian Jazz on vinyl by a fav Tete Montoliu for a great price and in excellent condition. As for Books i settled for a book of Zen Chants by Kazuaki Tanahashi, which i have been told is one of the best collections of ancient chants in print these days. He's pretty well know, but the book isn't so easily found on a shelf in a shop. BMV is a great shop, in a great neighborhood, hidden in an awesome city !!! Toronto rocks !!!! read more

I've come here a good ten times over the years and not to just this location but most certainly have a pleasant time here. This particular location is 3 floors of books on books on books. You enter the store and there you've got the recommended classics or feature books of the month. As you venture towards the back of store, there are bookcases of classics, literature, popular books, comics, self help, cookbooks - just about everything under the sun. There are even older editions of textbooks which can be used for reference (though a bit outdated) Upstairs you'll find children's classics, self help, nutrition guides and books for your hobbies. I really enjoy coming here because I spend at least an hour browsing for something I've been longing to read or just skimming the synopses of random books I'd never think to read. Books here are cheaper than getting them at a big box retailer and you're helping support local business (yay!) On the lower level of the store you'll find DVDs, CDs and other treasured items which are available for sale. Once in a while they'll have a collector's edition or rare finds. I don't think I'll ever stop visiting this store and each time I bring a friend here, they're always amazed by how well priced these books are. You don't NEED to buy new if you're only going to read it once. read more

Sure, you love the library, but sometimes you want to BUY a book. And sure, you want to buy a book, but books are really really expensive, right? BMV is the perfect compromise. The store is stocked full of remainder books, gently used books, used DVDs, even some VHS movies. Its prices are used bookstore prices except you don't have to dig through a pile of dusty old books to find a good one. The store is clean and organized. On top of having an ample fiction section they have an vast selection of art books, non-fiction titles and books on any topic for very very cheap prices. The good: The prices and selection are ok. The bad: Good luck finding something specific. Random access cataloging system is clearly in place here. The ugly: The surprisingly grumpy robot like man (void of personality or humanity) at the buying counter. Is he giving away his own money when he buys your used items for pennies on the dollar? Sadly, some of the staff are indeed rude and condescending. The folks downstairs selling CDs and DVDs are generally more pleasant than their upstairs counterparts. Good customer service? Ha. Good luck with that and dream on. Finally, it's a discount bookstore for a reason. They buy low so it's much easier for them to sell high. Profit is all that matters in the world of business. Ok, this is one of the best used book stores I've ever been to. Hate to spoil the party right out of the gate, but it's fricken fantastic. It's so good, you forget that it's a used book store! And, it's so much more than just used books. There's new books too. There's magazines. Videos (Yep, they weren't lying when they called it BMV standing for books/magazines/videos). It's 100% legit! I went for the videos first. I'm one of the few living people who still buys DVD's and Blu Rays and sometimes I think stores like HMV and Best Buy forget this when they charge $30 for new releases, so it's nice when stores have enough awareness to charge what people actually want to pay for these things. Of sure, it's because they're used, but who cares, they're priced to move!! The condition of the discs is great too. Bonus points for that. The books are great. They're all in brand new condition, but priced at about 1/3 to 1/4 of the original price. Staff here is helpful and friendly. I want more books. They're open late here! (Not this late though. Haha). It's hard for me to get out to browse if they carry a particular book I'm looking for, so I've asked twice now for them to check and call back if it's actually in stock, and both times the staff are rude and condescending and refuse to help me out. I think it's insane that you expect your customers to come all the way to the store to see if you carry something when you're unwilling to walk through the store to check for them. This review is based on selling books, or pardon me, trying to sell a book. I recently read on here that they take books. Ok, sounds good to me. I've got many a book I had to buy for university (not textbooks), think general lit. I called, spoke to the 'buyer' and he said they have to take a look at the condition. No problem. I walked there on a hot day, I had three books with me. One of which is a Charles Dickens book. It's really big and they do have multiple copies of books, if i didn't know better I'd say it was a new bookstore. Anyways, moving right along. I see the "selling" desk and I ask the guy at the front where I go to see if they'll take my books. He points me over to the empty counter. I wait for five minutes, go back and ask the guy at the front "Is there anyone working there?" "Yeah, he should be back soon" Another ten minutes go by and finally some guy comes. I tell him that I'd like to know if my books are worth anything. As I take them out of the bag he roughly grabs them out of my hand, flips through them all and says "no we can't take any of these". Ok, no need to be so rough about it. Geez... I think you devalued whatever my books were worth. What really makes me confused is if you know by looking at the cover it isn't any good why do you have to flip through it? He didn't bother using the computer to look up the value of my books, (I am guessing the computer is used to look up prices, unless the computer is for aesthetic purposes only. My books were gently used in really good condition, no creases or pen marks. But after he roughly went through them I'm not so sure. Please don't man handle the book if you have no intention of taking it because its not what your interested in. It seemed as though I had inconvenienced him by making me wait fifteen minutes. Dude was in a huff mood for sure. They had some cookbooks, one that was signed by renowned chef Martin Yan... However, if you plan on selling books here I suggest you go donate them instead of wasting your time hauling the books here only to have to wait and when you are finally served, made to feel like they are doing you a favor by making them look at YOUR worthless books...Is this what going to a pawnshop feels like? read more
