Worse experience I've ever had in 40 years of banking. I had a car loan through them and I will never ever do that again. Their website looks like something that was made by a high schooler 10 years ago. You can't get any information, it's such a backwards site and trying to find certain things such as upcoming payments took me 25 minutes to find. It's just a joke and I know websites, I have developed them. When I needed customer service, I got somebody from the Philippines who could barely speak English. If you pay extra towards your loan, they automatically extend your next month's payment instead of applying the extra amount towards your actual loan amount. They had never stated that. Ive had it with BMO, and will be closing all of my accounts with them on the next business day. Every single time I try to bank online, I get We can't find your username or password. If I call for help on a weekend or bank holiday I reach a call center in the Philippines. And they can't find my account either, although they don't mind making wait while they try to search. Their ATMs are terrible too. Twice, at on -site BMO ATMs, the machines rebooted mid transaction. I had to call to confirm that the transaction completed. Also, MANY times the ATMs fail transactions after all user inputs. And they don't seem to care read more

This was one of the worst banking experiences I have ever had. I called the bank to dispute two $25 Amazon return fees that I did not recognize. The bank opened an investigation and temporarily credited the amounts back. Shortly after that, the bank decided to close my account. I did NOT request to close my account. The bank made that decision. This was extremely inconvenient because my salary was being deposited into this account and I had to urgently change all my payment and payroll information. To make the situation worse, after the bank closed the account, they charged me a $50 "early closing fee". No one informed me about this fee. No one warned me that closing the account would result in a penalty. And again -- I did not request the account closure. Charging a customer an early closing fee when the bank itself decided to close the account feels completely unfair and unacceptable. Customer service was dismissive and refused to resolve the issue. I recently opened a new BMO account, and I'm honestly furious with how my first experience has gone. After depositing my very first check through the BMO mobile app, I was shocked to find out it will take 7 business days to process -- yes, seven! I even called customer service hoping there was a way to speed things up, but got absolutely nowhere. How is anyone supposed to pay their bills or manage everyday expenses with such a ridiculous wait time for a simple mobile deposit? This is 2025 -- every other major bank processes checks within a day or two at most. I opened this account expecting convenience, but instead I'm stuck waiting over a week just to access my own money. Customer service is crap. They send everything to a call center. There is no way to reach 'the back office' which they claim is in charge of everything. Their 'fraud' prevention is a joke. It pops up, you mark it as fraud. They still give your money away and then ask you to call the call center who has no idea how to fill out the form. The bank as a whole is trash. This bank is SH*T. Every time I need them, they refuse service of what I need. The latest is I went in with a 32oz cup of all quarters. They said they don't have a change machine. I said, "can't you just count them out?" "I can help if need be." "No, we can give you paper rolls and you can do it and bring them back." I went to my other bank literally across the street, Central Bank of Missouri. They DID have a change machine, but it was down at the moment. The teller counted it out by hand. I think its very lousy for BMO to cancel my credit card due to terms and conditions, whatever that means, and NOT NOTIFY your customers before hand that you are in fact closing a customer's account. Instead you let vendors get a decline notice when they attempt to charge on my good standing account and then let the customer scramble for alternative payments. This is a lousy business decision. I will make sure to spread the word through social media about your unscrupulous business practices. I will await your letter explaining your business decision. I had a fantastic time with my BMO mortgage lender (locked in a 5.625% rate, he was always timely and patient). As a result of my mortgage loan, I was required to open a BMO checking account. I expected similar customer service, but instead I've been faced with a handful of issues over the last couple of weeks. While trying to transfer money into that account for my mortgage payments, both my and my wife's external accounts were flagged as fraudulent (despite the fact that we added these external accounts several weeks ago). I spent over 75 minutes on the phone with BMO customer service and was promised that this issue would be resolved in 24-48 hours. She was separately told the same... It's been 4 days and the issue remains. Now I'm rushing to find an alternative way to pay my mortgage on the eve of Thanksgiving week. I just tried closing the checking account, and BMO told me they'd charge me a $50 fee for closing the account within 90 days of opening it. I asked if they'd be willing to waive the fee due to their inability to resolve this issue, and they refused. Avoid them at all costs. Their customer service is terrible. read more

TLDR: If it's not broke, don't fix it. Happily going back to my original CC company that has my back, communicates exceptionally well and has local representatives/not farmed out to a 3rd world country, and protects ME as the customer. BMO bought out all of our small, local banks in the area - fine. If someone wants to sell/buy, that's life. In order to support "local" and continue doing business, I applied for their cash back credit card. Used it and loved it for several months and then suddenly payments stopped going through. I was left scrambling to use a different method at checkout. Thinking maybe they stopped it for suspicious activity, I started calling around to see what was going on. After jumping through innumerable hoops and waiting on hold for an ungodly time, I learned that BMO shut my card off with no advanced warning. I understand T&C, but like many other reviewers have stated to just shut off a card and then FINALLY get a mailed notification nearly 3 weeks later is a horrible business model. BMO discriminates against seniors. They intentionally inflict undue stress on them by deciding to cancel their account after they paid it off to use on a family vacation this weds. They should have to reimburse my parents for the thousands of dollars they are now unable to retrieve b cuz it's non refundable 2 days b4 the trip! They sent no notification of any kind. My mother found out that they had done this b cuz she started getting notices from their creditors that their pmts were not made & they r b n charged a fee now. Worst bank for older ppl. Wish we could give minus stars!!! This bank is the worst! We went with this bank because it gave us a lower interest rate, but they have been nothing but trouble. I had to go into their bank to set up my account to pay them. Then they sent us 5 different payment books which were all incorrect. I finally got into their online banking and noticed the money I paid extra and specifically asked to go to the principal was never applied. They lied and said it was, but when I couldn't find it online I called back and was told by another customer service person that they don't do that. It only lowers your payment. They don't allow you to see a dashboard of your total account (total that was financed, what you've paid, etc.) as other banks do. It only shows you payments??? This bank is fraudulent!!! A simple... very simple question about a large payment made against my LOC and why it has not posted in a week. I have been transferred 4 times and yet again this person tell me i need to talk to someone else. I went from the LOC dept to the Online dept to the LOC dept and now being sent elsewhere. As an Executive i do not have time for this show! A simple payment posting question - i see it online in my accts showing "in process' now for 5 business days. SERIOUSLY??? Secondly, tax forms - there is a folder online for tax forms but of course they are not filed there. Had to call to be told to look at the regular statement forms for 2025 and there i will find my 2024 tax forms. Just a waste of time. read more

HORRIBLE! Wish I could give 0 stars. Hours on the phone only to be disconnected and provided inconsistent information. I was told I HAD to close my account due to fraud concerns but could open a replacement account via phone. Then was told that my husband had to be on the phone too. He drove home hours to participate and we spent hours verifying information and were told the account would be active (e.g. to reinstate autobill payments) 48 hours after our receipt of confirmation emails. Emails never came. More hours on the phone only to be told that we need to drive the 3 hours to the nearest branch to open a new account and that the different departments can't be expected to know or track what's been shared or promised by other departments. Still on hold while I'm typing. I will drive the 3 hours and will gift cheap champagne so they can celebrate my move to a different bank. read more

I have had a credit card with them for over 30 years. I just received a letter dated 4/10/2025 that they are closing out my credit card on 3/31/2025 because we were identified as not fitting with their requirements. The worst Bank for a loan. I took out a boat loan and realized after that there is a per diem. Meaning I pay $5.60 per day that I have the loan. It's basically rape, and nothing was clearly stating that when I applied and was approved. It seemed like every other loan I have ever had. Not this one. To top it off, they apply over payments to the next payment. It's Dec 2024 and I don't have a payment due until Sept 2026 because I have been over paying thinking I was paying down the principal and interest. That is not the case. They wont adjust the payments, and my perdiem stays the same at $5.60 per day regardless if I have $1 on the principal or $50K. WORST WORST WORST company to do a loan with. Stay Clear. read more

This company's practices are ridiculous. I called to access my account and request a service. When a representative answered, he requested my account number. I let him know I had to look it up and asked if there was something else I could provide to verify my account. He said my social security number, which I provided. After I gave him my social security number, he tells me he can't assist me because I didn't provide my account number. So I've banked for a while, like most of us. I know that's very unlikely, but by this time, I had pulled up my account number and offered it to him, and he refused to assist me. I requested to speak to a supervisor; he refused. I requested his name and ID number or location so that I could provide this info when I complained to a supervisor; he refused! By this time, I'm feeling like I'm in a fraudulent situation calling my bank because he took my SSN and refused to assist me or allow me to speak to a supervisor. How do I know you aren't taking my information and not logging the call? After I ran down the list of suspect behavior on his behalf, he finally gave me his name and nonchalantly said he was in Guatemala City, which based on his conduct, I don't even know if I should believe! I called back to speak to someone with common sense, and he flagged my whole account so that I couldn't speak to anyone and have to go into a branch to access my account. The person I spoke to after him was very apologetic and understood my frustration and confirmed the unusual behavior, but at this point, they couldn't do anything because of whatever he did with my account. I will be closing my account as soon as I walk into that bank on Monday, and of course, it's the weekend! Days without access to my account or funds. Bank of Montreal... no thank you! DO NOT USE BMO Bank. I have a credit score of over 800 and never made a late payment. I have had this credit card for more than 15 years (previously Bank of the West.) BMO closed my credit account with no notification and no explanation. They have a clause in their account agreements that says they can do this whenever they want and by using them, we agree to it. When I called the credit department for an explanation, two different agents told me that they mailed an explanation letter on two different days. I went into a branch, and they also could not give me an explanation. I still have not received any letter of explanation from them and nothing in the APP or online shows that my account is closed. At Bank of the West my interest rate was 9.9%. When BMO took over my account two years ago, they raised my interest rate to 14.99% overnight with no explanation. This is by far the worst customer service I have ever seen. read more

I had a horrific experience with BMO that cost me about $1,500. I had a sizable CD that matured and I wanted to close my account and have the money sent to me. Notwithstanding that this is the year 2025, and even though I had sent them a wire transfer when I opened the account, they insisted on mailing me a paper check. When the check never arrived, they made canceling that check and having a new one issued exceedingly difficult. They refused to send me a new check unless I signed and had notarized an indemnity agreement in which I had to essentially claim responsibility for losing the check, even though it had never arrived, and to indemnify them for any loss if someone else cashed that check. Then they made me feel like they were doing me a favor by waving their 90-day waiting period to send me a new check. I finally, after much effort, reached an agent who was very helpful, and after I emailed her the signed and notarized indemnity agreement (which she was unable to waive), was able to arrange to have a replacement check sent to me via UPS, but still it was over a month between closing the account and having the money, a cost to me of $1,500 in lost interest (which of course BMO benefited from by having an extra month to use my money without having to read more

Support is terrible and they have fraud controls in place that locked my account after a basic transfer to another bank account that was setup and used for over a year! I recently tried to use my BMO card for a purchase. 4 year account holder, $8000 limit, never a late payment, zero balance, and an 800+ FICO. Card was declined because customer service said the account was being closed per BMO policies and they do not need to inform the consumer?!! No reason given and according to customer service, no reason will be provided. Untrustworthy policies from a sub-par financial services provider. Stay away....frustration looms. I had an account with Bank of the West and its predecessors since 1993. BMO bought out BOTW and at the time I closed my bank accounts because BMO had such bad reviews. The credit card had a low interest rate so I kept that until yesterday a standing order wouldn't go through because of an issue with my card. I always pay early so it's not for that reason. Today I called and was informed that the card has been cancelled. No explanation given. Obviously terrible customer service not to give me advance warning.
