I love Bluestone Perennials. After xeriscaping my Colorado yard last year, I am now new gardener in year 2 of my gardening experience. Last year when my yard was complete, I enhanced the plantings my landscapers put in with quite a few plants that I ordered online from Bluestone Perennials. Bluestone's plants come in their own little peet pot. Last year was a hot late spring and summer, and some of the plants did not look like they were very happy after their trip to my doorstep. I reached out to Bluestone right away, and they said they would replace any plant that wasn't doing well, but also explained that under their warranty they would also replace any plant that didn't survive after one year. So, I put these plants into the ground as soon as I could, talked to the plants daily for encouragement, and was excited to see what would happen the next spring. As the yard came back to life this year, many of the plants looked better than ever. Stronger, healthy. They grew sturdy and bloomed more than last year after going into the ground. Nonetheless, there were still a few that did not survive the winter. I contacted Bluestone, and they responded very quickly. They shipped me replacement plants for those they still had available. For the few that were no longer available, they asked me to find a replacement of my choice from their website. They were extremely helpful through identifying the right replacement plants and getting the order on its way in a timely manner. I was feeling a little urgency, as I didn't want to plant them after the heat really set in for the summer. They all arrived quickly, and I got them promptly into the ground. Every one of these replacement plants look beautiful, and one of them is even blooming already! Now, I can't wait until next year to see them become stronger and really thrive! Let's talk about the new plants' little peet pots. You are meant to plant the plants into the ground while till inside the pot. No removing them tenderly from a plastic surround that has to be cut off (sometimes) and then thrown away. This makes planting these plants practically foolproof. You can soak these pots to keep the plants happy before planting, and also to provide that little extra love as you put them into the ground. For this price you can buy a mature plant in the local nursery. Ordering from Bluestone Perennials is only worth it if you can't find a specific plant anywhere else. They send you tiny seedlings for 15-30 dollars, a price of mature plant. This year finally my Hellebores bloomed, 2 years after I planted it. I ordered Fire and Ice and it bloomed solid white. So they sent me the wrong kind that I can buy in any garden center. Major disappointment. The shipping was good. No complaints. Make sure to get rid of the degradable pot, don't plant in it. It will degrade eventually, but roots struggle to get through and it slows down the root development. read more

I recently ordered two Baptisia plants online from BlueStone Perennials in an attempt to match two existing bushes that were planted by my home's previous owner. I was unable to find the variety I needed at my local nurseries, but BP was able to ship them out quickly which was what I was looking for. I was shocked to see how small the two plants were when they arrived for the price that I paid. I though they would be much more established but they arrived in 4" pots and the growth was pretty minimal. The plants are doing well so far but I can't plant it in the ground yet like I thought and it definitely is way too small at this stage to be a companion plant for the existing bushes in my front yard. The clematis plants I received from Bluestone Perennials arrived in excellent condition. They were very carefully packaged and I appreciated not having to take them out of the pot to plant them. The Bluestone website is well designed and user friendly. Unfortunately, tracking my order was impossible on the website, and the company doesn't take phone calls after 4 p.m. or on weekends. Via email, my order was confirmed and I was informed the order would be shipped the week of September 20. When I hadn't heard from Bluestone again by September 29, I sent an email cancelling the order. An hour later I received an email saying my order had been shipped. The clematis were delivered the next morning (huh?!) The invoice stated that the Asiatic Lily bulbs I had also ordered would be shipped later. I got an email confirming my order cancellation and PayPal refund for the lillies. I wrote back explaining that I had only cancelled the order because they hadn't shipped it, and that Bluestone could either ship the lillies or refund that part of the shipping, which was done. read more

Bluestone has not been the same high-quality mail order plant nursery for the past two years. This year they mailed me three lamb's ears perennials that were a mess -- dead black leaves, broken green leaves, and they had not wrapped the pots so loose dirt was stuck to the leaves that were still healthy. They're sending me a refund. Last year I bought three salvia perennials from Bluestone and they were a rotting mess. Dead, rotted black leaves. They sent me replacements. In the past Bluestone sent me beautiful plants that were so healthy and packed perfectly. I'm just guessing that now maybe they are outsourcing their mail order operation to some half-ass supplier. read more

First and last time customer. Most of the perennials I purchased came with mostly small, yellowed or anemic looking leaves (even though the soil was still moist) and many of the plants were very tiny. They came in plant-able coconut pots. I removed them from the pots and was shocked to see that basically most of the soil just fell out. The pots mostly contained just loose soil, no roots. The plants only had a few very tiny roots near the base of the plant, pretty much no roots at all. Two weeks after planting, periodic watering, and some fertilizer, they have still NOT improved at all. I also bought two tater tot arborvitae. When I removed them from their coconut pots, they looked like cuttings that were placed in the coconut pot soil with one main stem and no side roots forming. Also note that they charged my form of payment immediately upon ordering rather than when the plants shipped at a later date. I feel like it was money wasted. read more

What a complete rip off. I paid on avg $16-18 for each plant and I got ridiculously small plants, some covered in fungus, which have likely infected three whole boxes. I expected the sizes to be comparable to what I would get at any other nursery (norm a quart size plant with decent growth for those prices), not baby plants for $18 AND to not be disease ridden. When plants are too small this late, they wont survive the oncoming warmer weather. And to pay ridiculous nearly $300 shipping on top of that. I am furious right now. To spend nearly $2700 to get this????????? I waited a little later to the end of spring to get larger plants because we get late frosts. I mean, REALLY?!?!?!?!? I should have paid attention to the low ratings you have gotten over the last year, but I thought I would give you a chance. Never again. RIP OFF!!!! A complete and utter let down. I will give you that the packing is well done. But that is all. When I called to provide feedback, the lady just talked over me and cut me off. I tried again to suggest revisiting their price point for their starter plants. They claim that the plants were 6-9 months old. Impossible unless they are counting from the day the seed hit the soil. In the end, they said I would get a refund, which is a nice gesture, but to not even listen to the customer, blowing me off and cutting me off is not professional way to handle customer trying to give honest feedback. I was so psyched to see that Bluestone was located a few miles from my house. I had no idea! I placed an order and did curbside pickup when COVID was still a thing. Their outlet wasn't open which was a bummer but they had a tent full of annuals you could check out. Big place. I ordered two more pots of hydrangeas this year (different variety but these babies are easy to grow!) and a mum. All came intact and are healthy. Have bought from these folks for a very long time -- started back when they sold small plants at modest prices. Now the plants are bigger, as are prices. Great selection, and timely service. The only problem for me is while their packaging does avoid 'transplant shock,' it does often cause 'transPORT shock' because of the cardboard containers (environmentally cool but not all that protective of the plants), in the heat (here, even in spring), delivered by the unreliable UPS (who drop my packages at random addresses) means plants are often very stressed. This should be part of a destination weekend. Go to their nursery! We were in Madison to shop for a greenhouse at Arcadian Glasshouses, really nearby. So of course we had to go to Bluestone and the nursery prices are quite a bit lower than the online catalogue prices and you don't pay s&h. PLUS there is a table of what I call CHEAP THRILLS - the clearance table! And you get to see the plants in person which is very useful. I confess to spending too much $ but I left very happy. Then we stayed at His Majesty's B&B right in Madison, since we had driven 8 hours to get there. My last home's yard was furnished heavily with wonderful Bluestone plants but here I am in a new barren yard and the s&h is killing me plus no more little starter plants at lower prices. I remember when their website first went up and how far it's come. I love how they will ship your perennials in packs of three mini-plants so that they have a chance to get rooted in your garden rather than arriving root-bound in larger pots and struggling a bit to get going once you free them up. Their selection is one of the best, I have found some fabulous items here that I have never seen in local nurseries, even the super expensive ones. And pricing is reasonable. I live in California and bought three Japanese Anemones based upon Bluestone perennials great reviews. They arrived today in beautiful condition - but the cherry on top of the sundae was the packaging. No plastic whatsoever except for a little bit of packing tape! Each plant also has an individual fibrous mat on top of it to keep in the moisture. This company is doing it right! And I am not receiving annoying emails that I didn't ask for. So they are not using or selling my name immediately to add to their own profit. All plants arrived in excellent condition and as another reviewer indicated, the packaging is ingenious and protects the plants extremely well. I had to rearrange my garden to fit a long narrow space instead of a corner. Now it is spring. Only one plant out of the entire bunch did not make it through the first winter: Buddleia Blue Chip, a small version of butterfly bush. I ordered several plants from their online mail ordering early spring. I received all but one that ended up being backordered. When the plants arrived, the invoice stated that the backordered plant would be shipped in the fall, even though they had already charged me. In addition, a second plant, a grass, was literally two, 1 inch high blades. I paid $16.95 for each one. I have contacted customer service 3 times requesting a refund on these two items. Even though their policy states 100% guarantee with immediate refund if you are not satisfied, I have yet to receive any acknowledgement or refund. It has been months now. Based on this experience I would advise everyone to run, not walk, away from this business. Oh, Yelp, why didn't I check with you first?! I have always been completely uninterested in having plants shipped to me. I mean, how could they possibly do so successfully when plants need such diligent care, especially when they are small and tender? This year, there were a few particular plants that I wanted and could not find locally, so I bit the bullet and made my orders. I ordered two plants from Bluestone Perennials, and two from Wayside Gardens. Within days I received my plants from Bluestone and they were superbly packaged and in great shape. Exactly as seen in the previous reviewer's photo, the plants were securely in place with cardboard fitting. I was so pleasantly surprised, I thought, Oh, I guess you can ship plants well after all! I have planted my two sweet little Cupid's Dart plants and they are doing extremely well so far. Meanwhile, my order from Wayside arrived a full week after it was shipped, the packaging was horrific (styrofoam packing peanuts!), and the coreopsis I had ordered was leggy and near dead. Apparently you can also ship plants horribly. Basically, Bluestone was the best quality and shipping I could imagine, and Wayside the worst. Very satisfied with plants and customer service. I have purchased 3 times from Bluestone (online) over the past couple years. I've been very happy with their packaging (plants arrived in perfect condition), I LOVE the ease of the biodegradable pot it comes in, and have had successful plants. EXCEPT 1 variety- but this is where the great customer service comes into play. I had emailed them several months after getting a variety of Heucherella, as they were NOT thriving, they gave me some great suggestions, but alas, this spring they did not return at all. I emailed them to let them know and the very next day, they had sent me some other plants (more successful ones I've had from them), as I had said I would be ok with a refund or a replacement. Now on my second large order through this company. I am replanting what was once an established 1/3 acre garden here in Southern New Jersey that I acquired when I moved into my house. All the plants they have sent so far have all done well. Their selection of not just bulbs but starter plants is what really, for me, separates this nursery from their competition. They have many hard to find plants that other nurseries don't carry. I will give one critique and that is that I wish they would include some type of a discount for repeat customers or customers who place large orders, as the cost per plant plus shipping do add up quickly on large orders. When I called and inquired about bulk pricing or any type of savings, they said they don't really offer any discounts. I understand good service comes at a cost but I would think it would be wise to secure customers like myself (and I imagine many others as well) to show appreciation for that loyalty. We've been using Bluestone Perennials for several years and order three or four times a year, they are that good..We live near the Illinois /Wisconsin border, officially zone 5 but my husband claims we're really in 4. The plants are small, as Mara's review says, but they really do grow well, most importantly, they come back the next year looking amazing. The price compares well with big box garden departments , but these plants thrive and the assortment is astounding, plus a great website with a custom search. Shipping service is exceptional. Gorgeous, healthy plants! All of my plants were so much larger then I am used to receiving from other online nurseries. Couldn't be happier. I love the new eco friendly packing and the fact that the plant does not need to be removed from a pot, avoiding root shock.
